Perception, Dreaming, and Awakening, Stephen LaBerge

  • Our dream experiences seem so real to our sleeping minds that it is usually only after we awaken that we recognize our dreams as the mental experiences they are. Happily, there is an important exception: sometimes while dreaming, we become conscious that we are dreaming. This remarkable state of consciousness is referred to as "lucid dreaming" and is learnable and rewarding. Scientific research has proven the objective reality of lucid dreams, and has led to the development of new methods of inducing them. I will provide a brief overview of lucid dreaming, touching on techniques and technology for achieving lucid dreaming; a model of dreaming and waking consciousness; scientific research on mind-body relationships during REM sleep; and several applications of lucid dreaming - exploring consciousness, enhancing creativity, personal development and self-integration, dream yoga, and transcendent experience.
Of the many applications and implications of lucid dreaming, the one of greatest, deepest meaning is its potential to stimulate spiritual awakening. Implicit in lucid dreaming is the knowledge that one is dreaming, which is to say, that one is not awake. Yet this is the paradox: as the beginning of wisdom is "to know that one knows nothing," so too, the beginning of awakening is to know that one is not awake. If we suppose we already are awake, as we do in both the dreams we call "false awakenings" and also those we do not call dreams at all, but presumptively term "waking life," how can we even frame the possibility of waking up? We already (believe) we are. Yet as both ancient Eastern spiritual teachings and recent Western psychological science agree, much of ordinary life is lived in such an automatic unconscious manner, that to say that most of us somnambulate through life seems little exaggeration.
In the words of Bahauddin Naqshband (d. 1388) "Here we are all of us in a dream caravan. A caravan, but a dream. A dream, but a caravan. And we know which are the dreams. Therein lies the hope."
    STEPHEN LABERGE, PH.D.
    Founder of The Lucidity Institute
Stephen LaBerge is the first scientist to empirically prove the existence of the phenomena of lucid dreaming. His work has developed this technique into a powerful tool for studying mind-body relationships in the dream state and he has demonstrated the considerable potential for lucid dreaming in the fields of psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine. His book on the subject, Lucid Dreaming, Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming and his more academic Conscious Mind, Sleeping Brain have received enormous popular interest. He is the founder of The Lucidity Institute, an organization that promotes research into lucid dreaming, as well as running courses for the general public on how to achieve a lucid dream.

I am just finishing my degree in Neuroscience. There are still people who don't know what lucid dreaming is and are skeptical. LaBerge paved the way in proving that lucid dreaming exists, and this gives me immense hope for other currently "untouchable" topics primarily concerning consciousness. Thank you for sharing this video, he is very inspirational.

Kathryn W What other untouchable topics within consciousness were you thinking of? It would be interesting to hear from a neuroscientist on this.

dont need Laberge to know lucid dream exist, just have to live one. Its a bit weird how you dont give a small comment hat you did one. but if you are here you probably did.

I proved to myself that lucid dreaming exists. I was about 10 years old and having a horrible recurring dream so that I was a brain to actually go to sleep at night. One night I decided I will know it when I have that dream. I kept thinking that for some reason, and I fell asleep. Sure is the sun coming up I had that horrible dream that very night, but suddenly like someone flipped on the light switch, I realized I am standing here in the middle of that dream I hate so much. Then I decided I’m not going to do any of the things that were so scary. The whole dream change from oppressive and scary to sunny and peaceful. And from that point on I began lucid dreaming regularly and never had a nightmare again. That was over 50 years ago.
So, yeah, lucid dreaming is very real. I learned it before I even knew it was a thing. Before I had even heard of it. In my case it was a kind of self-defense. Unfortunately it is subjective and I don’t think science will ever be able to prove it in a satisfactory scientific experiment That you can repeat with the same result.

I lucid dream every now and then , my family and friends think I'm making this up but I'm not it's a real thing to lucid dream . The experience itself to wake up in your dream is what I believe to happen after death . It's crazy at first because you then realize within your dream that you have been watching your dream like watching TV then you start to feel a tingly sensation I call energy and it flows within you and brings you to life :) it's a unique feeling that I'd only have experience while lucid . Then your questioning how is this real and you'll soon start to explore and do things you wouldn't be able to perform in reality . I flew in the sky I punched through a metal wall like nothing id explored ancient Egypt and ironically that was the place I was in my first lucid dream ever if you guys are into this you probably already know that in ancient Egypt lucid dreaming was a practice . The answers to the universe are everywhere.

At least he admits or is aware of, that maybe consciousness isn't 100% produced/generated by brains despite the apparent abundant correlations, that's still a taboo topic in the neurosciences(& related).

In short, thoughts, sensations & perceptions, all flowing out of Our Essential Self, Awareness, even though we call it a dream...Thanks for posting !

From my experience REM stages are when I'm selecting which thoughts I should dive into. What is going on in REM for me is I'm getting thoughts and pictures slides passing like train carts. What I'm doing is selecting randomly the most attractive thoughts and dive into it.

+D Graf Yes. Our brains are making reality unconsciously but while we're lucid, we're making the model of the world.

OH.. So lucid means the subject knows that he has a body. and someone out there to signal. too!!! I was under impression that subject only knows he is dreaming. and dont have body consciousness.
