@@Malc664 it’s not. I found them for under $40k with nothing added on. Contact some of the forum dealerships and you can get 3-5% under invoice + and extra 1% off for tread lightly and then Jeep incentives. I got my JT Rubicon for 10.6% under invoice.

Love the videos with Tommy and Roman. I recently lost my father, and he and I loved cars, trucks, and bikes. He was always with me whenever I’d buy something. Seeing these two together puts a smile on my face knowing a father and son are enjoying and appreciating vehicles the same way me and my old man did.

Agree & I have a JLU Rubicon … it’s overkill & mostly a pavement princess.
I often think about a new JL Sport S or a Willy’s. Having had two rubies I never honestly needed the full capability each one offered. If I did it again I’d want to stay 33’s or 34’s as narrow as would be safe. I would go with a stick. 2 door. Gi Green all the way. I done built one on Jeeps site.

You guys should use this Willys Sport as a baseline 4x4 that is your baseline expectation for 4x4 performance. It could be the "control" in all of your experiments with other 4x4 vehicles and would make it really cool to see this Jeep in a side by side comparison with all the other vehicles you test off road.
I think they should use the regular sport for that comparison

@@AustinH7, the only real advantage is a rear LSD. The short wheel base helps too but as far as equipment goes, this is a pretty basic off roader.

@@theinternets7516 true it is very basic, I’m speaking on terms of any vehicle with 4wd, this still would kick most vehicles asses offroad, the solid axles, short wheelbase, lsd, of course a vehicle with lockers and beefy tires would stand up to it
I heard him say "manual windows and manual mirrors" "as stripped down as you can get" and it made me think of my first Jeep with zipper windows, no radio or AC and an inline four cylinder! Love your Jeep, though.

Tommy I love your Jeep and I’ve never owned one and at 67 probably never will. I love the crank windows, manual door locks, ect. Ect. No confusing or busy electronics to foul up. Very nice.
PS: don’t let the detractors talk you into the aftermarket rabbit hole. You don’t need sway bar disconnect or lockers or 50 inch tires. Keep it simple stupid! Words to live by.

Maybe a winch is all he needs. That’ll give him the security and confidence to really try and push it and take it in some sketchy places that he probably wouldn’t do without it or if he was by himself.
The swaybar disconnect (less than $160) changes the abilities of the Jeep so much more. Having an extra 2" of suspension flex is so much better than wheel spin. Tires on the ground means more traction.

@@gregmize01 - I was one of those you speak of. 2012 MW3 package. Rarely if ever HAD a need to engage lockers. Limited slip, coupled with great rubber and 4.10 gearing made me a happy Jeep dude. I attended numerous Jamborees sticking to easy to moderate trails. Fun fun fun. No stress, no worries over body damage, lots of support if attendees needed it. GREAT eats! Palo Duro Texas I gained weight! If I ever get another Jeep I’d signup do it all again.

Love the Willys package! There’s two versions ~ Willys and Willys Sport (less expensive). Yours is the direct descendant of my 1985 CJ. Keep showing us what it can do! Slip test next ?

Big Bend is similarly priced, better features, way more cargo space, and can be configured with a rear locker for no extra cost. I think Tommy got ripped off.

2 so far there is 1 bug in the bronco system and we still need some info on engine/trans from customer at 100,000km use atleast, "jeep v6 has alot more reviews/customization"

@@alfredofernando6445 Hi Alfredo! The Bronco is indeed more of an unknown with regards to risk adoption. Given that risk vs known Chrysler junkiness I would take the risk personally. Track width of Bronco is only 2" wider than Wrangler. Same track width as the H3 that I wheel all over and still narrower than full-width axles+offsets that many people wheel on. The Bronco additional size is negligible.
I’m feeling pretty good about my 2019, 2 door rubicon, manual for $35k. It has the bigger screen, power windows and locks, and a soft top.
Prices 2 years ago are not what they are today. Basically ass $5-10k to what we were paying even a year ago

i love the fact that you didn't get a rubicon, because a lot of the content on youtube would make you think you need a rubicon to go on all of these trails.
The fact that this thing struggled, requiring multiple attempts, tires spinning, and eventual momentum bashing to get up that rocky hill is enough reason to have lockers. Lockers take vehicles up those trail sections without any drama or wheelspin, making a much better ride for passengers and less wear on the trail. A Big Bend Bronco with a rear locker would have walked up that without spinning/drama.
@AA Mech Similarly equipped (like with AC) the Willys is much closer to the cost of a Big Bend Bronco than you're implying.
The 2 door vs 2 door, willy sport vs big bend.. Bronco has 60% more cargo space, better wheelbase for highway and trail stability, better crawl ratio, better creature comforts and features.
The cost difference from Big Bend with rear locker to a base+sasquash package is about $4000, not a few hundred.
Wouldn't that 99% rule make the AT's more useful for 99% of driving than MT's? A MT tires are louder, cause vibration at low speed on roads, get out of balance faster, have garbage traction on ice, and wear out faster. The LSD won't make up for the lousy winter traction of muds on ice. The argument you're making here is that most people won't be on the trail enough for the locker to be important, but then suggesting this same audience should drive around on mud tires for daily driving? Seems a bit ironic.....
For most trail running, AT's and MT's perform similarly. The only place MT's have any advantage is mud, but truthfully there is no highway capable mud tire with large enough voids to really be all that good in mud anyway, so it's a marginal improvement in that 1 situation for a significant compromise in daily driving and winter weather driving.
On the topic of an LSD in the rear.. vs driving open on ice/snow. A full-time LSD, if it's aggressive, is actually very likely to cause the rear end to kick out and get squirrely on ice. Combine that with mud tires and a shorter wheel base, the willy's is a recipe for disaster in the winter for most drivers. The Bronco running the rear open by default, on AT's, with slightly longer wheel base, is apt to be much more predictable and controlled on ice.

I run STT Pro Muds on my H3 in the summer for trail running and daily driving. In the winter I switch over to duratracs with studs. I have never encountered a trail scenario (or road going scenario) where I felt that the mud tires were meaningfully advantageous over a well built AT. Mostly I live with more road noise and worse fuel economy because they look cool and that's most of the benefit. They do have tough sidewalls and tolerate being aired down very well, but I know a solidly made AT would handle the tough trails just fine.

No need for a locker. Add a set of sway bar disconnects and you will climb great in that rig. Low tire PSI and flex go a long way on the trail.
One of the cheapest and best off road mod is a front sway bar quick disconnect ;)
Keeping tires on the ground makes all the difference in the world. Way cheaper than lockers too.

I got the quick disconnect on my TJ and decided I didn't need to reconnect. I've been running it disconnected everywhere, including freeway, for years now.
7:50. Apply light parking brake pressure to engage the rear LSD.
The affordable Jeep. The real thing! A real 2 door, soft top, manual with limited slip. And nothing else you don’t need. Well, the AC is a nice touch. And cruise is nice. And it’s painted red.

Lovin this Jeep. I love base cars in general. I have many mods on my Jeep and sometimes I wish I could go back to the simplicity.
Me too lol! Many times I think I over did it that it’s no longer impressive/joyful when I conquer an obstacle. And I added a lot of modes when I was a beginner. Now after some years of experience, I would’ve done things differently.
Yeah man. Leveling kit with next size tires and 2 round fog lights on the front bumper. Maybe a winch.
Tommy, I’m not sure but I don’t think the rear differential was working correctly.
You might want to test it on the rollers you use to test all wheel drive vehicles with.

That's the downside of limited-slip axles, they work well in slippery situations snow/ice but when you need them to work the most, they will let you down, unfortunately. An example might be rock crawling.
The axle needs to be spinning fairly fast for the LSD to have enough inertia to engage. The way Tommy was slowly inching up the hill wasn't enough, you need to keep your momentum up with an LSD.
@@dcl97 depends on the type. Friction or viscous coupling works at any axle speed.
The factory LSD is crap because it uses friction and burns up easily. I put a eaton true Trac I believe it's called (mechanical LSD) when I re-geared my jk, and that thing worked almost as well as a locker
this package is boss, I do give you credit for finding this. I didn't know it even existed.

i bought this exact build save the engine as i opted for the 2.0 T for the torque and gas milage. i wanted the bronco but the roll out and top issues encouraged me to wait a couple of years for ford to sort all the kinks. im very excited for my jeep to get here.

Tommy I have an open-diffs red ‘98 TJ and I put sway bar disconnects on… best affordable upgrade hands down. The front axle not only has more articulation- it plants itself to the ground and doesn’t allow the open-diffs to spin. The ride becomes 10x smoother especially with the 2 door. Congrats on the new beast!

Manual is also much easier when you are in 4 Low. It pretty much idles.
Being able to start it in gear without using the clutch is especially nice.

Bronco Big Bend is only $2K more and can be equipped with a rear locker for no extra charge. It comes with the same tire size, 60% more cargo space, and more/better trim/features/materials. It also has a much lower crawl ratio with the additional "granny" crawler gear, better traction control system, and more engine power at high elevation.
I don't have any skin in either game. I drive an 09 H3 on 315/75-16, skids, sliders, winch, front/rear lockers, and some steering reinforcements... Bought it used a few years ago with 65K on the odo for about 1/3rd the price of a similarly equipped new Bronco or Jeep. When I look at what is available on the market new today, and factor in my experience wheeling, camping, exploring, etc, I would take a Big Bend over a Willy's without any question. The 60% better cargo space alone would be enough for me if everything else where equal. The Willy's is just very overpriced given the competition. If a Big Bend is $36K then a Willy's+AC should be more like $29K.
My first Jeep was half that price.. I bought a new ‘97 Wrangler SE with only three options. It had cloth seats instead of vinyl, 5 spoke wheels with P215/75 tires instead of steelies with P205/75s, and power steering. Yes, power steering was an option in ‘97. Mine had no A/C and no radio. I believe I paid mid $15k for it with destination and tax. The MSRP was $15,7XX. Most dealers at that time we’re doing about $2k additional mark-up but I found one selling for invoice.

LOVE the new Jeep, Tommy! When I first started 4-wheelin manual trans was the only choice, and while lockers existed I didn't know anybody who had one. The one option from a Rubicon I'd like to see in the base model is the ultra-low range transfer case. With a 4:1 low range, you wouldn't need lower axle ratio to put 35's on it.

Personally I want to say congratulations! That’s an awesome rig as your first new vehicle. From a review standpoint, this video definitely convinced me that if I do ever buy a Jeep it will be a bare bones (bare as can be in that trim anyway) Rubicon - it would be worth the wait to save the extra money. That Jeep should not be struggling so much on that Rocky incline. I realize the camera doesn’t do the grade justice, but my LX570 would have eaten that hill for lunch.
Just ordered my Jeep Willys today same color as this one. Longer version, needed the extra room for family and cargo. Won't be be delivered until spring. Thank you TFL for your hard work in testing and reviewing the Jeeps it helped me pick out the one best suited for me. 👍👍

Agreed. 4Runner too. I feel like for certain vehicles it should be available a la carte regardless of what trim model you're buying unless they decide to include it automatically like with the Rubicon and TRD Off-road and TRD Pro models. It would be nice to be able to get something super basic and tack on a factory rear locker as a 1-2k option.

Great video: I usually have off-road with my dad and his 2019 Suzuki Jimny A/T on the Italian alps. Also it has a naturally aspirated engine (even if it is smaller w.r.t. the jeep one: 1.5L 102hp) and its tiny dimensions is perfect for narrow “streets” commonly found in the Alps

Just wanted to say thanks for informing me about Webster pass. My son and I went out there from Kansas City last week and ran the entire length and had a blast. Side note... my 2019 F150 fx4 6 inch lift, Bilstien suspension was allllllmost too wide for the hwy285 downhill side of the pass. Most of the trail was plenty wide but at one spot there was a washout and we had about 4inches to spare with the 35"12.5 20's. There are holes in the two front seats from our butts clenching so tight but we are alive and have a story to tell and and an experience we will never forget!!

I maintain is too basic given what you paid but MAN does it look good. Clean and simple. And the soft top if it insulates the cabin well enough i think is a better choice than the hard one, good video!!

I bought a new Jeep Rubicon back in 2013 and could not be happier with my purchase. Great choice, you can add lockers and sway bar disconnect when you have the funds or even want.
Watching you drive around with your new “basic” Jeep, it reminds me of the first few videos I saw of you when you looked like in your late teens off-roading with a couple of your friends. I vaguely recall an episode when your friend’s Jeep stalled at a gas station.
My 2021 Willy's Unlimited also lacks power windows, locks and mirrors...I tell myself, It's less things that can break.
First week, drove my then spanking brand new stock bright white 2020 Wrangler Rubicon to explore off beaten paths in and near Death Valley. Driving to Chappo Springs, began moderate, but later included unexpected loose rocky climbing challenges and plenty of "pin stripes" on my plain black fenders. Short wheel base of a 2-door was fantastic for getting through some tight maneuvers.
It is so refreshing to see a video about a $30,000 Wrangler being used out in the wild, as opposed to a $60,000 Rubicon --or a non-existent Ford Bronco-- on a controlled course. Over the years I have found his comment "there is something satisfying about a front solid axle" to be so true.
I bought a brand new 2012 2dr rubicon and almost 10 yrs later I'm still exceptionally happy. Disconnecting the front sway bar would make a lot of difference off road..
Just curious did you disconnect your front sway bar? i know you mentioned that you aired down, but disconnecting that front sway bar (couple 18mm wrenches) is going to really get you that softer ride and more articulation, have fun with your new ride!
Nice jeep tommy, same model I’d go with. As for the worlds smallest reverse camera, I direct you to a 2013-2015 (roughly, don’t quote me exactly) Tacoma where it was in the corner of the rear view mirror.

When I bought my Rubicon, I joined a couple Jeep clubs. The first few times I took it out, I got a few comments about why I brought my new Jeep out offroading. I just told them, "it's why I bought it".
Mine was a pavement princess before I got it and it was in pristine condition. Like your dad said, after a few rash marks, it didn't hurt near as much.

Jeeps are just fun offroad. Even in my ZJ, you just feel that offroad pedigree come alive once it goes to 4L.
ZJ & WJ grand cherokees are no joke. Solid axles front & rear, full coil spring suspension. ZJ suspension set the bar in 94 for the upcoming Wrangler (97 TJ) suspension overhaul.
I like your Jeep Tommy, sometimes it's good to keep it simple.
The Willys package makes a Jeep very capable. Rubicon tires and wheels, Dana 44 out back with LS and 3:73s front and rear. I have a 2016 Willys Wheeler and love it.

Recently bought the same Jeep Willys 2 door 6 speed manual soft top but in Earl Grey, nice to see what it can do off road, now I'm worried about this new trans recall.
I bought a 2019 4door sport JL with anti slip rear diff for $36 out the door.. then I bought Rubi rails $130 bucks and 255/75/17 mts.. $800 perfect for what I use it for. Next I’ll be doing 35x10.50x17 along with 2” mopar lift.
Been waiting on this. I like the hand crank windows.

Two years on and I’m still not a Jeep owner (circumstance) but I love the two door. So many people have said “you really need the four door for all of the room it offers”. I’ve been driving MINI Coopers for over ten years, what’s “room” 😁

My only criticism of the Willy's after I learned about all you get in that package, is that you don't even have the option of getting a rear locker with it. To me that's bullshit, they want you to jump another $10,000+ to the Rubicon for lockers.

The JL is amazing.... JUST KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR HINGES!!! Mine corroded like crazy around every hinge and it needed multiple repaints.... leading to me trading it in. Great offroad though and the manual everything was refreshing for me.
Have exact same spec. Willys Sport, manual, soft top, two door, roll up windows, and AC. Mine is green. No problems so far, very satisfied. Very much enjoy the lack of tech and silly driver aids.

you don't need hill descent control if you've got gearing and a diesel (i have a Td5 Defender)... just leave it in 1st low and it'll crawl down every slope - i can personally confirm it!

He doesn’t have sway bar disconnects yet. 100 bucks and that issue is easily taken care of 👍🏻

Just bought a manual 4D Wrangler in July and love it! It's utterly immaculate, and I'm super worried about scratching it, but fully understand what they were designed for. I kinda want to start a scrap book of battle scars when I finally do go off road 😂
Mine is coming, hopefully. Living in Canada, orders are always a long process. Ordered in April, still no VIN. Can't wait.
Get some sway bar quick disconnects and you will go right through that spot without spinning. Which I think you had on the JK too, they are super nice. And also make the ride on the trail SO much nicer.
It’s a true statement saying you don’t really need the rubicon. Us regular people are likely too scared to ever get to the point of actually needing a front locker. I would like the 4:1 transfer case tho. Would be nice if they had a parts a la cart option where you could literally pick exactly what options you wanted
Thing I found is my JL Wrangler 2 door turns sharper than the 4 door. Also on dead end roads with little or no room to turn around it does much better than the 4 door. In Montana that is a huge factor.
Of all the Jeep videos that you and your dad have done I like this one the best. It shows what a baseline Wrangler can do right out of the box. I'm sick to death of the Rubicon always being shown. I have owned a 4 door Sahara for over six years and have never needed lockers on 92 trails I've run in the Arizona desert. The first upgrade I did to my Jeep was just putting on a set of Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires and I went everywhere on those. Just picking the correct line and taking it slow is the ticket. And no, the trails were not all easy or moderate. I ran some that were difficult and also took some that I won't do again because of trail damage do to the difficulty. I have installed other upgrades over the years; 2 inch Mopar lift, 33 inch Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires, Procomp Wheels, rear and front steel bumpers and wench. Rock rails (the stock plastic rails were a joke) and LED front headlight package and to finish it off a CB radio. I know from experience that most people don't realize that the stock jeep one purchases is the working frame that will be upgraded over the years to the finished Jeep Wrangler that one will enjoy for decades. Oh ya, nice looking Jeep you got there!
Good for you going with something simple and affordable. The limited slip in mine took some getting used to, it will work, you just have to allow more slippage first which is hard with a manual. You have to have enough torque for the clutches to engage. Still a very cool little Jeep, spend the money on a front antirock sway bar so you have articulation with out disconnecting and go on loving that little guy.

Throw a locker in there, not all that big a deal to do. I’ve rarely felt the need to use lockers in my Rubicon though, you are correct that these Jeep’s go almost anywhere without them, especially lifted on 35-40’s. It’s that rock crawling that gets ya without lockers.

I just bought my first Jeep - Sahara 4xe.
The 90-10 rule is that I will spend a lot more time on the road than off the road.
The 4xe was the best handling Jeep that I tested. My building has free EV chargers and I live 25 minutes from MT. Charleston in Nevada.
I’ll take to the trails as is and if I so choose to add lockers, that can be done. If I choose to add better axles, tires, sway bar disconnect etc, that can all be done. Jeep is the only car that you can actually invest in. So kudos to these guys for not saying that you must have a rubicon to have some fun.

Any LSD requires both axle shafts to be turning before the limited slip mechanism cuts in. It only takes a minimal amount of forward motion before the Jeep ELSD operates like a soft locker. Its a good device. The Willys is a very nice practical Wrangler choice. A modern CJ5! Thanks
