- Areas of Sanibel Island after Hurricane Ian from both drone shots and on the ground. Some areas were left with just pulverized debris while most structures had significant damage from either surge or roof damage. We also have video from Ft Myers Beach, Captiva and other areas around Florida as well as South Carolina and Cuba either posted or uploading in the coming days so please subscribe to see more.

Vacationed in Florida quite a few times and no place was as pretty, quaint and relaxing as Sanibel Island. So sorry for everyone affected by this disaster.
Definitely something special about that place.

Me too and my fav thing about sanibel is the palm trees glad most of them are still standing hopefully within a year it should start looking normal again but who knows
My wife is the owner of week 42 at Surfrider, an inheritance from her aunt who owned it since the 1980s. We were scheduled to return there in two weeks before Ian laid waste to our little slice of Heaven on Earth. Despite our sadness and disappointment at losing a week we looked forward to every year, it’s minuscule compared to loss of life, home and livelihood suffered by the residents of Southwest Florida, including Sanibel and Captiva. It will be a long, difficult recovery for everyone in Ian’s wake. Our hearts go out to all the victims of this catastrophic storm. What can we do to help?
Help people who deserve it. Nobody on Sanibel is poor or needy. Hope your share of the roof repair is not too costly!
Roof repair??!! The Surfrider is a total loss.

As hard as it was for me to personally watch this, I am thankful to see what exactly my Seaside Inn looks like. The office is completely gone. Absolutely devastating. All of my love & continued prayers for ALL affected by Ian.🙏❤️

Sadly we have to deal with hurricanes this bad every few years it feels like the area always gets slammed but nature does what it does its natural the global warming doesnt help
Summer of 42 Beach cottage totally destroyed, home was 4-Sale before the storm. We were just at Surfrider Beach Club (Green building in the street) last week, our little piece of paradise wiped out.
Frankly I always thought that The Summer of 42 (formerly known as the Sutch house) was too flimsy to stand up to a major hurricane. You could clearly see that it sat on a base of columns and cross beams, rather than having columns extending to the height of the structure, which is the way the more recently constructed homes are built.
Is it worth rebuilding? What if another one hits in 3 yrs?
Note to self. If I'm moving to the beach build a lighthouse.
This is heartbreaking. Many great childhood memories here. Late 60’s early 70”s.It was called The Gallery back then.
Spent a lot of time, as a kid at the old Gallery, great times.
Thoughts are with the residents of Florida in this time of need. Shout out to my friends in the Ft Myers/Naples area and my Spring Break hangouts Bonita Cigar Shop and Worlds Famous Cigar Bar
I am glad to see some intact structures. I imagine they have extensive damage but it gives me a bit of hope that Sanibel will be rebuilt. Prayers for all affected by Ian.
There are no intact structures, the entire island was submerged under 12-18ft of water. The 1st and even 2nd floors of almost every structure that is still standing are completely washed out and gutted down to the concrete walls. Not to mention the water damage and mold that is going to set in before they have a chance to rebuild the causeway to bring in crews to mitigate the water damaged strucutures before it becomes a total loss. Unfortunately, 90% of the island will have to be rebuilt from the ground up.
I noticed a lot of wooden constructions destroyed but if you notice the concrete ones held up am I wrong?

Yes and no. Even the ones that look perfect have things like blown out garage doors, several feet of water damage and no way to get it repaired so mold is going to become an issue fast.
The worst damage came from flooding, not the wind.
@@WxChasing in the modern construction the garage doors are meant to blow out so the storm surge can pass through the lower level, this is why so many of the resorts have under building parking, it raises the first living floor about the storm surge flood level, you shouldn't have any finishes that can mold on the parking level in theory, but some choose to close them in with blow out panels and take on the mold risk.
I saw a lot of single homes in various stages of construction over the years. The modern protocol is that that they have very substantial columns (treated wood), sunk deep, that extend to the height of the building, and as the other poster commented, there is a clearance, or blowout panel at the ground level. If you look at the videos, it seems that all of those homes look pretty good.
Maybe it's time to let mother nature claim what is hers and not rebuild
We were staying at Mitchell’s Sandcastles from the 8th until the 12th of September. Hard to believe it is no longer there.
Sanibel has been our home for a week plus for the last nine years. We absolutely fell in love the first year! We hope and pray that eveeyone finds the strength and courage to rebuild. I wish we could come down and help!
I grew up in ft myers, I was there again a few years ago. We use to celebrate Christmas on the beach at my grandparents vacation home on Sanibel. I hope it's still there
Thanks for posting this. At least now I know. I own two weeks at the Surfrider 3:39. I bought week 31 in 1980, when they were just built, and 32 in 2014. Now both of those units (the second from the left, and the third from right) are across the street 5:55. Bummer. We were just there.
Me and my family stayed in the Kona Kai motel in Periwinkle Way drive of Sanibel of August 11th through the 15th, and knowing that the motel we stayed in is damaged by Hurricane Ian and all the buildings and houses we saw around our block is devestating to look at. It's good to know that the lighthouse of Sanibel is still standing.

So heartbreaking. Did you go past The Waterside Inn by chance? Loved that place. Sanibel holds a special place in so many hearts.
We stayed, with my husband and 3 young kids, at the Waterside Inn for 2 nights beginning on Christmas Eve, 2015. We brought a small Christmas tree all the way from Canada and Santa had to "find us at the beach" that year... We loved it! Even the no-see-ums! This breaks my heart to watch! 😭 I always thought my family and I would come back some day to do it all over again...
Building houses and buildings on what is a sand bar. This is why its a sand bar and not a forest Its supposed to get blown over.
Insurance costs in Florida coastal will explode to 10 of thousands a year. Same happened in California due to wildfires! To sell will be a nightmare as all loans will require insurance.

More working opportunities for unemployed, OT for waste management people, electric company workers, carpenters, etc. More furniture and appliances to be replaced, good for the furniture and appliance manufacturers. Life is too short, enjoy the benefits of your hard earned income. Don't worry, be happy! Its just another year of beautiful sunny Florida! This is challenging opportunities for structural engineers, civil engineers to get a better perspective of what materials and home construction to build in the future.
We were scheduled to be there on vacation Sept 16 but cancelled because of all the storms. So sad, what a beautiful place but they will clean it up and go forward.
That was my home. I survived. I evacuated. I lost everything. I don't recognize these places.

Yes. Captiva was absolutely devastated by Hurricane Charley in 2004. It took a few years before we could visit our family's timeshare and a few more before things really felt like normal, ironically, Captiva this time fared really well; perhaps as a result of the most of the building having been upgraded to modern hurricane codes after that storm. Sanibel will recover but it will take time. It might be a few years before the businesses start to come back, the restaurants and so on. They'll be hit by lack of tourists who won't be coming because it's still in recovery mode. Then, I would guess, around year 4 or 5 the tourists will be back and hence, also the businesses. They'll feed of each other and things we start to feel normal again as rebuild settles down and nature regrows, hiding the scars of this storm.

Absolutely unbelievable. At minute 8 we see The Surfrider, or what's left of it, with the second building, part of it, on the street. We love The Surfrider and have stayed there many times. It is truly heart breaking. We had hoped to go back next year but given what we're seeing, that will likely be at least another year or 2. So sad.

I probably can't price a single home due to the cost of getting to the island. If I had my own boat I would just be set up there with my starlink and shoot the whole island. However, if you go to my website and click contact, select damage assessment then open a ticket and if a handful of people want it done we can probably find a way to make it happen.

Shot in the dark here but could you get a video of the homes on Bowen Bayou Rd? We are trying to see if our home is salvageable or a loss… from what we hear it’ll be weeks before we can get on the island

From what I can see from the satellite imagery almost every roof and POOL ENCLOSURE FRAME on Bowen Bayou Rd appear intact when doing A-B comparisons of Google Maps and the NOAA sat image post storm. The same can't be said for Long Point Ln. and Umbrella Pool Rd., the house on the left hand side of the culdesac 1834 Long Point Ln, has lost most of its roof and it looks like maybe some of the pool enclosures on Umbrella are bent up but that could just be the different angle and lighting of the satellite view.
I think I would move.
Our favorite destination! Sadly from the looks of it, it will be years before we can enjoy it fully again...

All the cottages and restaurant/office are gone. The rest sustained something like 15’ of water.
I just just drove by there last weekend. Completely gone. Just sand now.

Absolutely insane looks like a tsunami hit which essentially did. I was just on captiva a fews ago and it seems like the fared much better
All buildings should be condemned and start fresh with the highest standards possible or do not let these owners rebuild until those standards are met !!! we are all effected by substandard construction and that is why our insurance gets so costly! there are proven construction techniques to survive these storms !! Galveston Texas had just a home hit by and extreme storm !! the only one to survive and if you want to live there that is the requirement to build !! Insurance companies should stand firm on this commitment to safer homes !!!
Any new structures have to meet current building codes, many of those homes that were wiped out were old and grandfathered in so they didn't have to meet modern code. So anything rebuilt now will have to meet modern strict hurricane building code.......

They had a home that survived hurricane Michael but from my understanding it’s very costly to build that way.
But I agree we should build how they build in the Caribbean
When building NEW, yes require a certain standard, we have them they are called BUILDING CODES and there are codes specific to wind and weather but you can't just say, Oh we updated the code, now you gotta spend a 100k+ dollars tearing your home apart to retrofit it to modern codes or a Million + to knock it down and rebuild to current codes. No thats what insurance is for, you build to the standard at the time of building, if the standards change you don't have to update, thats just unreasonable, many people would be forced to default on their loans and lose their house if we did that.

I've never come close to experiencing anything like this. My thoughts are with all that have lost their property and more importantly loved ones in this tragedy.

This was a rain flooding storm with rising water levels from everywhere from sea levels and river overflowing and never knowing when it’s going to happen again and it will!😢

It would be nice if we had infrastructure that could handle any storm even one of this magnitude. Maybe a system than could actually benefit of such pure natural power.

Florida has to rethink the construction codes. The infraestructure is very fragile.
So sad. We loved our time at Sanibel.

I’m a little confused about some of what I was seeing…the interiors that you shot around the middle of the video of all the stripped rooms-were all those rooms on the sea-side of the house? What floor? Shocking that they were stripped to the frame. When did the people know they were facing a cat 4-5?

How about doing research and see that storms have been stronger in the past as well. It is a weather cycle that can be affected by much. And, records have only been kept for a relatively short time so you do not really know how many strong storms there were before records were kept.

In agreement with Ed's comment, there has to be a structure that is impervious to withstand brutal 🌀 hurricane winds, storm surge and high 🌊 tide flooding. Florida strong... Mother Nature and her climate changing wrath is no longer a survivability issue.

Much of the debris is trailer alum siding and alum roofing... Countless trailer parks along that coast have been there since the 1950s. Under recent (last 5 or so years) Florida statute, they will NOT be allowed to rebuild what they had. State statute requires 14 foot elevation for first floor and unrestricted 14 foot ground pilings area. i.e. No under house closed wall garages. Very few are land owners. Most merely paid HOA and rent fees for decades... Their beach days are OVER. They can move inland and find cheap housing north and east of I-75.
2x4 construction is terrible... it should be cinder block only here in Fl

😢worse than Andrew at least it was all on land, Andrew had a lot of wind and little rain. Ian was both, but mostly water. They can only get there by sea or air, there are no roads.
Boy I lived through Andrew, I was there when it happened, we stayed in Homestead the whole time, we got a double wide setup in the backyard while they rebuilt the house. Don't let a single road to the island make it "worse", Take what Ian did to Ft. Myers Beach and multiply that by 20, thats what Andrew did to South Florida, we didn't have the building codes we have now back then.

I wonder if there are any earth moving machines on the island, they will be needed for the demo and clean up. I doubt they will be able to get any barge or large boats near enough to transport big trucks, machines, and remove the debris and a bridge Is a long time off. This will be a slow moving recovery on the island.
Sanibel City workers have already cleared the main arterial roads and are working in the residential areas now using equipment that survived the storm. They are waiting on barges that will bring in the big front loaders (which they removed off the island for safety) for debris removal. I think that is planned for the new few days. They are having daily briefings on this.
@@Roaming50 Where can you load/off load vehicle of the size in Sanibel? The docks at the marina are for foot traffic. Is there another spot I’m not aware of?
@@sqmus That I'm not sure. City Manager says that mainland side the dock is not the issue. It's securing a dock on Sanibel that they are working out, which I believe they have now.
They could use roll-on-roll-off landing barges to load or unload heavy machinery straight on the beaches easily like 40 ton excavators, loaders, dump trucks, tankers, dozers, mobile cranes or whatever.
Heavy machines etc will come across by ferry. Already in process. Can unload at multiple places on island. Our complex has bought them and are waiting for bigger ferry to transport them to island as they will with police cars etc that were taken off island before storm.
Flying that drone through those pylons. Gutsy. I'm impressed with your flying skills. But if I ever get to ride with you in a car remind me not to.

Some people are committing saying how can people deal with this kind of storm's like Florida in sc in all are dealing with in live there it's because if you live there all your life in love it you don't want to move that be just like where everyone else lives would you give it up I wouldn't I love sc in nc in Florida in I don't blame these people it will take time for them all to build in be strong it's the faith of the lord I'm going back to nc cause it's my home in I love it there even those I was raised in Pennsylvania

Not really. Gulf coast Mississippi looked like this and New Orleans metro was underwater. Much of the lower 9th ward still hasn’t been rebuilt.
