My favorite thing about this scene is that they show middle-aged and older women just having fun and being silly for the hell of it. A lot of media tries to make it seem like once a woman hits middle age, especially if she has children, she is not allowed to be fun or silly unless it is to make the children happy. This scene has me LIVING.

I'm from Greece and as yall know, Mamma Mia was filmed in Greece. The best thing about this part of the movie is that the old ladies and all the other people you see except Donna and her friends were local people from the Greek island. The fact that the director joined them in the movie warms my heart. It gets me every time.

Mothers, daughters, wives, grandmothers, stepmothers, sisters, girls, women - always remember, we are ALL the dancing queens! Oh, ABBA. What a treasure.
theres something about this scene that makes me so emotional :( seeing all these beautiful women (young, middle age and elder) just dancing without a care, and having fun; its so beautiful.
I have this fun with united 93 and we’re living our lives at 1am. Woody is just lying there like “What the hell are they doing?!” Woody is just jealous that United 93 saved me from him. I remember holding United 93 and sliding down the stairs with it a few times. I love United 93 so freaking much, darn great movie
I was in high school when the movie was released. Every time I watch the movie, especially this scene, the memories come back. I miss my friends, I miss being young and carefree. I'm in my 30s now, maybe I'm not that old but...man, I miss being young...
i cry everytime i watch this. because this is such a happiness, such a joy. i'm crying when i see women in this video dance together to the song, when women put off their work so they can dance with others. and everyone is dancing. everyone is happy no matter the age. oh my god after this video i always cry because this is the level of happiness i want to feel in my life
This movie hits differently depending on the point of life you are in. It makes me happy but nostalgic at the same time, everything was so much more peaceful and simple the first time I watched this movie with my dad.
This past December, my friends and I were at a bar. They had live music playing and prior to this song, we were the only table that was singing loudly but once this came up, our table immediatelly jumped to our feet and ran straight for the dance floor. Minutes later we had the whole bar dancing along with us. Honestly I have never felt more alive, we were so in the moment we actually got up on the tables and started dancing on top of them, I've never felt more main character than that night.
This happened at my Year 11 prom night, I joined my friends and we went nuts dancing on the tables and I remember how happy one of my friends from Australia were when he saw that happening
. Yea, I was being myself dancing to a really good song when some grumpy woman told me not to dance. I just kept dancing. And although I am in my upper 60's I still have my air guitar, make up songs and laugh obsessively. When I taught school I used.made up accents. For fun. It would be special to do what they are doing, but I realize it's only a movie and I should have my own kind of fun with family or friends.
The dancers on the video weren't really dancers, they were just the inhabitants of the island who were mostly farmers and fishers. They all said that it was a once in a lifetime experience.
this scene made me tear up a little bit when i watched it the first time, i just love it sm, how they show little girls, middle aged women, young adults, everyone from different shapes and sizes, hairs and colors, they're all dancing queens
I get what you mean. I have just come out of the movie, and after the sequel I really needed something to remind me why I adored Mamma Mia in the first place. :-(
Yes. You get to know it around the 2nd minute of the movie, so it's not like a big spoiler or twist in the script. But it sure was a shock to me. Had I've been aware of it I don't think I'd have rushed to see the movie. :/
Whats so great about this scene (and this movie) is that it's all about a middle age woman questioning her choices in life, starting to realize her mortality, her mistakes and the legacy she wants to put behind her. But working so much for the next generation, she forgets herself and start to question where she belongs in all this. Suddenly her friends start teasing and playing, like they used to do when they where young. With song and dance they inspire all the other women around to feel the same, any age and any ethicity. That no matter how old, no matter your past or background, you can still sing, dance and play, and be your own queen in your own story. Mamma mia tels us that if your young u shouldnt waist your time forcing yourself through old traditions, but take your own time. and if your old you have still your younger self longing for adventure and fun, so why not let it out? Why not burst the bubble of every day life, and just sing and dance and live a little? Together with old and new generations of women. The time is now, so take your chance while you still can.
Agreed, she truly is a gem. (And ironically the thing I always remember first when thinking about the movie.) Just sad that they showed the old lady again, but didn't make her yell OH YEAH in the sequel.
When I think about what the essence of womanhood is... my mind has always gone straight to this scene when all the women stop what they're doing and come together to sing and dance. The sense of community, support and love gives me absolute CHILLS. Any trans woman who decides to take on the role of a woman, support us, be fabulous and wants to dance with us singing dancing queen in the sunshine, is more than welcome!!! A community is what we make it. People can tell those in their communities to stop dancing and that they're not welcome all they want, but they have every right to ignore that notion as much right back :)

Such an incredible song and such an iconic and enjoyable scene. I bet they had fun filming it. You can't watch this and not smile or sing along. So much fun.

Good!
she made me cry
I don’t know ANYONE who needs lyrics to this majestic thing. :D
Mothers, daughters, wives, grandmothers, stepmothers, sisters, girls, women - always remember, we are ALL the dancing queens!
Oh, ABBA. What a treasure.
theres something about this scene that makes me so emotional :( seeing all these beautiful women (young, middle age and elder) just dancing without a care, and having fun; its so beautiful.
girlhood is something so beautiful truly. how lucky we are to live on a planet that has women.
@@terminatedaccount8198 Absolutely!
Absolutely no one:
Me: *cries every time watching this*
The old woman holding the branches💕😭
Me too, this is heartwarming
SAMEEEE
Same haha
Blackpink in this area too? =)))))
I cannot even express how happy this scene makes me
I have this fun with united 93 and we’re living our lives at 1am.
“Screw em if they can’t take a joke” is a permanent mood in today’s society
Yooo literally!!!!
I totally agree with you on that!
As it should be
Ayo true
damn straight
My only problem watching this wonderful movie is that I wasn’t in it.
Big mood
Fr tho
😢
Exactly
@Victoria exactly.
Meryl looks like she's 20 in this scene.
And moves like she is, too, even though she was almost 60!!! Amazing.
No. She looks like she's only 17
americanwomanFL no way. She was really nearly 60!?
She has so many energy jumping like that on the bed at 60? OMG and that big final big jump in to the watter, i wanna have all that energy one day !
1920 maybe
My favorite is the little old lady carrying the bundle of sticks and just YEETS them
"Oh yea!" ✨️
i cry everytime i watch this. because this is such a happiness, such a joy. i'm crying when i see women in this video dance together to the song, when women put off their work so they can dance with others. and everyone is dancing. everyone is happy no matter the age. oh my god after this video i always cry because this is the level of happiness i want to feel in my life
Agreed!
Just came back from skopelos island...
It was gorgeous- watching this makes me cry too!
I hope you do one day
I felt exactly the same. So much joy. And this song really reminds me of my youth, my mom is an abba fan. If only the world was as happy as this...
Very touching part
I thought i was the only one that cries to how happy everyone is!!! I'm only 18 and still haven't experienced anything close to this!!!!
Yeah Abba will do that to ya
Im jealous
Old people are just young souls in old bodies. They want to have fun just like us.
It's impossible for me to watch this without smiling
Or singing
@@Truecrimeresearcher224 XD omg just said exactly same thing.
It's impossible for me to hear this without dancing
Agree
Or crying 😭
after 10 years, this scene still get me a goosebump... young and sweet only 17,digging the dancing queen!!! abba forever...

Directors: yeah we don’t have choreographer so just do what you want
Meryl: (to the cast) we’re doing a whole number ok
The dancers on the video weren't really dancers, they were just the inhabitants of the island who were mostly farmers and fishers. They all said that it was a once in a lifetime experience.
This bio data hiiilay London
@@chrrischris9610 Nope, that's not true. Everybody was cast in this number, choreographed, and only 3 people were actually Greek.
@@lilliehalumi8770 they were inhabitants though
this scene made me tear up a little bit when i watched it the first time, i just love it sm, how they show little girls, middle aged women, young adults, everyone from different shapes and sizes, hairs and colors, they're all dancing queens
After watching Mammamia 2. This performance made me miss Donna more. Damn these manly tears!
I get what you mean. I have just come out of the movie, and after the sequel I really needed something to remind me why I adored Mamma Mia in the first place. :-(
All the tears!
Donna's dead?! 😥😭😭😭
Yes. You get to know it around the 2nd minute of the movie, so it's not like a big spoiler or twist in the script. But it sure was a shock to me. Had I've been aware of it I don't think I'd have rushed to see the movie. :/
How did she die they cannot kill her off
Whats so great about this scene (and this movie) is that it's all about a middle age woman questioning her choices in life, starting to realize her mortality, her mistakes and the legacy she wants to put behind her.
The time is now, so take your chance while you still can.
you must be kidding... theres so much more in these movies

Agreed, she truly is a gem. (And ironically the thing I always remember first when thinking about the movie.)
Just sad that they showed the old lady again, but didn't make her yell OH YEAH in the sequel.
I did too 😂
I came here because that old woman slides through the stairs and
rvanderzee 1 My sister and I remember when we went to see the sequel in the cinema when it came out and we remember saying Omg 😭😭😭😭😭

OKAY WHY AM I LITERALLY CRYING THIS SCENE GIVES ME SO MUCH SERATONIN AND GOOSEBUMPS I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW

I LOVE THIS SCENE WITH ALL OF MY HEART!!! Theres so many responibilties that women take on and this scene just shows women having fun!
'screw em if they can't take a joke' is something more people should recognise and appreciate and live by
"Well, then, grow back down again. Screw them if they can't take a joke!"
Iconic
Who’s ‘them’
People who can't take a joke.
I love the energy of this song/clip. It's just people coming together to have a good time.

I had that energy in me when I went to see 1917 in cinemas the best movie ever
I’m so looking forward to May 18th to have it on dvd
apart from that one guy hanging from the window, who knows what happened to him
At 3:02 the guy that goes "dancing queen" in the background is my favorite character in all of media
Meryl is so beautiful and talented, she is great at any role! She did great in this scene.
Maybe the greatest actress ever

if you don't SING ALONG you might need to get checked out tbh, this song rocks
Staff: hey director how necessary is it to have the piano on the boat floating in the water just for the old man to press three keys on the song??
Director: VERY.

That guy was actually in the original ABBA! They wanted him to make a cameo 😊
it's Benny Anderson
That's Benny Anderson he was one of the members from ABBA
Firstly that guy pressed more than 3 keys, secondly that guy is Benny from ABBA who wrote/produced like HALF of all their songs and was also one of the main 4 members!
A energia desse filme é maravilhosa. Meryl Streep simplesmente arrasou!😍👏👏👏
“Having the time of your life” gives me chills everytime
Wow I just found out what this song means it means that girls don’t need boys to have fun and they should be independent
nickolas bellangir you are really cool!

Julie Walters in Harry Potter: Being strict to their own children
But Julie Walters in Mamma Mia: Having the the time of her life
very wenderful
Molly Weasley isn't just a strict mom. She's caring and incredibly badass.
And the actress who plays Leonard's mom is the red head with the blue dress
Dude you are forgetting Miranda Priestly, the actual icy-cold devil Miranda Priestly,... as this sunshine incarnate Donna Sheridan.
I don’t care what anyone says, Mamma Mia is a goated movie.
When Molly Weasley, the Leonard's mom and Miranda Priestly take vacations

One of the best scenes in this magical movie.
