That shit's mental…HUGE men chucking tree trunks about, etc and while there are rarely foodstuffs involved most of them do wear attire that might show their meat & veg at any moment…❤️🏴❤️

I love that they have a rugby team at the bottom to relieve the competitors of any excess momentum. That is to say, if you made it down the hill safely, there is a large, burly man at the bottom waiting to shit-mix you and make sure the job is done right!
Some would suggest an inflatable barrier would do a safer job but I think safety doesn't really figure in this event.

I heard that the official organizers declined to organize it any more over a decade ago so the townspeople said, "Fine, we'll have our OWN cheese rolling event!" and kept on doing it.
it's a bit of a stretch to say it was ever officially organised... it's a 200 year old tradition kept going by committed locals not bound by regulation

This ceremony originally took place each Whit Monday, but was later moved to the Spring Bank Holiday. The first written evidence of cheese rolling is found in a message written to the Gloucester town crier in 1826; even then it was apparent that the event was an old tradition, and it is believed to be at least six hundred years old.

But there was a Cooper's Hill Wake that took place every Whit Monday that included shin kicking, girning, a maypole and eating and drinking.
The cheese rolling is the sole survivor of the fair.

Before my grandmother passed, I showed her one of these videos and she told me that every year, a member of the Welsh branch of our family sneaks onto Cooper Hill the night before the cheese roll and plants a big rock in the middle of the hill.
I think we owe these people a round of applause for volunteering to take a trip to Destination Fucked.

As one who has broken clavicles on the left and right shoulders from playing as a small-statured winger with wild abandon on a rugby team, I'd like to say to many of those participants - I feel your pain... 🤕😵💫
this place is not far from where I went to Uni and we went to watch one year, back in the 90s. what pictures and video never seems to catch is just how bloody steep it is, especially at the top. seriously, just walking down it is difficult enough.
I suspected that. Should go check it out some day, guess it's on private land.

In the 21st centuries ever growing paranoia and obsession for safety the Cheese Rolling Festival stands as a beacon of hope that dumb and stupid entertainment still exists.
Few who were doing fine, the organisers ensured to take down at the end with clothesline and spear WWE style.. 😂
A couple of weeks ago I got to see the original video from the competition this year , it's like the Groundhog day celebration here , I don't get to see it every year , I simply get lucky and stumble upon it . But watching this is even better with Ozzy Man's commentary , play by play action , well done .
