I just took some great photos of the demo at the Abbotsford Airshow on Saturday and it was awesome! The F-22 had just finished it’s wicked demo and I’m certain the CF-18 demo pilot said “nice…hold my beer.” before his flight.
I was the point of contact with the CF-18 team for an airshow in 2015. “Cheech” was the pilot, but most of my work was with the maintainers. It was a privilege and a real pleasure - what a great bunch of people!
@@Rurik8118 ah, my username is old - I haven’t smoked a pipe in many years. My favorite was Captain Black royal or white - that old-school vanilla aroma like my grandfather smoked. The CF-18 demo is always a crowd pleaser on the ground and in the air. Elaborate livery changes regularly for that year's celebratory milestone. The flight demo is on par with the US Navy F-18 and EA-18G demos; however, the Canadians seem to execute more high speed passes. BTW, the CF-18s have a floodlight on the side of the fuselage. Canadian pilot said its for spotlighting "Bears" (Tu-95).
Many comments have been made about the paint scheme for the 100th Anniversary of the RCAF Demo Hornet. It is almost impossible to tell based on the video that you showed, but one of the things that the CF18 is known for is the "False Canopy" on the bottom of the jet. This year's Demo bird has the official RCAF Tartan as the False Canopy. If you see it in good light, it is very cool!
From the CF-18 demo mishap in Lethbridge report: The engine during the alpha pass stopped responding to throttle input. At 200 feet he had no chance to recover.
I got to see the Tiger Stripped RCAF plane at the Salinas, California Air Show a couple decades ago. I'll have to root through my photos and see if his flaps were down on the take off. The pilot explained that the landing light near the pilot's knee was not for cross wind landings at night.
I was flying for the Army out of Stuttgart and was returning from the Mediterranean coast of Spain on a train in June 1983 and I ran into a Canadian pilot based at Lahr. I think they had been flying F104s. He said they were about to switch to F-18s and they were very excited.

Saw this performance at CFB Trenton. Will be seeing us again at CIAS, aero-Gatineau, and airshow London 😅 such a good routine this year, Tango definitely has the best demo routine from the past few years.
The Qatari F-15QA (the base for F-15EX) demo is really cool too, video of that is on that same channel. There's actually a couple there from different days, the second one is better because the cloudy skies give more reference to appreciate the incredible manoeuvrability. RIAT is a great show, wasn't there this year but have been many times in the past. USAF presence in recent years has been very sparse compared to what it used to be though which is a shame, although the Friday this year did have a U-2S role demo as well as one fully kitted-out returning from a real-world mission.
The Tudors do have ejection seats but they are original to the aircraft when it was first produced in the 60s. They are not 0/0 seats like modern planes have and there are flight parameters where a safe ejection is not possible. Thats exactly what happened when one crashed in Kamloops a few years ago after a bird strike. The guy who ejected first lived with minor injuries but the woman in the second seat didn't make it out in time and the chute didn't have enough time to open.
Preach. Captain Casey was my friend’s daughter. The CAF are making due with dated equipment, and when that includes basic modern safety measures, that’s inexcusable.
The USAF needs to develop a updated version of the X-31. That demonstrator had crazy maneuverability. They showed it off at an airshow in France a long time ago
I know that the RCAF bought the Navy version of the F-18 (beefed up landing gear), but why did they keep the arrester hook? Far as I recall, Canada doesn't have an aircraft carrier ( :-) ) Do they practice landings with that hook for emergency landings?
one of Canada's most recent paint schemes involved an eagle. a year later, we selected the f35. the f15 not being an option was political. yah... whatever.
the f15ex has 20000hrs per airframe with fewer logistics requirements for our northern operations. the purchase cost per airframe is so close that it requires significant ignorance to KEEP IT OUT as an option. let's hope we get into a peer conflict so we can maximize our purchase. tongue in cheek.
I've never seen the CF-18 do some of these tight maneuvers. If these guys speak so highly of the CF-18 and pilot, why are the armchair pilots slamming it so much? I'll take my info from the pilots, not someone flying a keyboard.

Caught this plane and pilot tranisting through the Mach Loop low fly area on the way into RIAT. Nailed it low and fast!
That take off to almost straight vertical was jaw dropping, good heavens!
The Canadians and the Swiss do really great Hornet demos.

Killer paint scheme for sure! Interesting to hear the US/Canada comparisons too.
