    Your description is correct but your picture of a baritone is actually another euphonium.

    Great video, but a fourth valve does not necessarily make it compensating. For it to be compensating, it needs extra tubing typically coming off of the top three valves on the back which are activated when the fourth valve is used. There are four valve euphoniums which are non compensating, as well as three valve euphoniums which are.

    I play Baritone at school then. Now I think I want a Euphonium, liked the color of the tone.

    When brass bands were starting to become popular in America, we used 2 Eb Altos and two Bb Tenors to play the upbeats in 4-part harmony. The Bb Baritone was used to (1) play countermelody, (2) double the melody at the 8va basso or (3) to double the bass an octave higher. What we call Alto Horns are called Tenor Horns in England, what we call Tenor Horns are called Baritones in England, and what we call Baritones are called Euphoniums in England. The matter is complicated by the fact that the English euphoniums are a little larger bore than the historical American baitone and this larger bore instrument has now become the norm in America. Four-valves and compensation systems have nothing to do with the name.

    Think of the euphonium as a bass flugelhorn as far as the sound is concerned

    You are 90% correct however the euphonium originated as a Baritone but then recreated in the 1800s by Germans soon to be called a Euphonium due to its beautiful sound compared to the Baritone it's conical shape due to its bore size and tubing gives it a little flexibility and tone on scales and fundamentals in playing classical literature

      Super Slash Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. This was a last minute class project, hence the change in video quality, so not all of my info was thoroughly researched. I'll update it if I ever decide to not be lazy

    What dident you also put carnival of Venice on the beartone the song you put for the beartone makes it sound exactly Like a trombone which it shouldn't sound exactly Like a trombone both euphonium and beartone should sound light and soft

    People call my euphonium a baritone to pick on me but I have played both instruments and I can tell a difference on how they feel. Thank you for showing people that they are not the same instrument. I play a hiesbruner(I probably spelt that wrong) euphonium. It's a 4 valve compensating. It was made in Sweden. I'm going into high school with this horn.

    I'd like to point out that 4th valve doesn't necesseraly make it compensating instrument. There are instruments which have 4th valve and it's just a sepparate valve. 4th valve is compensating when it sends the air back into the main valves. Sort of second sircle. On compensating instruments the 4th valve is always under the left hand finger but on non-compensating instruments it could be there but it could also be in line with the main valves. I've also heard people say that when the 4th valve is under your left hand then it's always compensating instrument but that's also wrong.

    • @michaelnenninger6735
      @michaelnenninger6735 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely right! I'm also an euphonium player and mine has 4 valves in line for the right hand, and that's got nothing to do with compensating, neither a 3+1 euphonium, that's what they're mostly called, necessarily needs to be a compensating one, but simply can have a different place for the 4th valve. I don't know who brought up this strange myth 3+1 would automatically mean compensating, but you can sometimes even find this nonsense in descriptions of expert brass instrument shops unfortunately...

    The "baritone" is actually a non-compensating 4-valve euphonium. The compensating system activates the extra set of tubing in the back of the horn, to help with tuning, not necessarily range. The 4th valve itself is what adds range, does not mean it's compensating.

  • @sleepy_tvv4802
    @sleepy_tvv4802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only difference between them is the baritone can produce a better sound without walls aka it's good for marching Euphonium sounds better and has better acoustics with walls.

    • @pocho6869

      That sounds like a baritone to me. The forward bell allowed it to project better which is why it was used for marching bands way back when, and even today. Most likely a baritone though

      +clara maples Try asking your teacher to clarify what they meant. In all honesty, they are pretty much the same, but if given a choice I would choose a euph over a baritone any day. The sound quality of the euphonium is much nicer

      +Rene Rodriguez oh Rene... I was enjoying this until I read that! I'm a baritone player however I've played both baritone and euphonium (and the cornet). I'm playing a yamaha YBH301S just now and the sound is amazing. This is just until I get my Neo baritone however, I respect each persons individual choice. :D

      +Justyn Hopkins Thanks for the compliment. Yes, thats what euphonium means, but they are made different. The bores are different which allows them to produce different sounds. They're basically the same but not
