As a non poker player...why did Phil H give him 4 opportunities to win? Seems to Phil had zero to gain and everything to lose...or 75% of the pot to lose in the case.
As the person who is ahead, you are statistically better off running it more times. He was an 85% favorite to win the hand. We can simplify this a bit by saying hes an 85% favorite to win every single time they run it. The number does change based on what cards came up but it shouldnt impact it too much. Rather than have a 15% chance to lose all of it in a fluke. He wants to guarantee he will come out ahead by running it more times because that 15% fluke is not likely to happen more than once. He was extremely unlucky that Ernest somehow won 3/4 of those hands and is probably what makes that the most epic hand. Even with that bad luck Phil retained 25% of the pot so he didn't lose everything.
@@turkeydano2106 Yes, exactly. Phil decreased his chances of getting 100% of the pot. But he decreased the risk of getting 0% of the pot too. My statistical skills aren't good enough to say how big his chances was for getting 75% of the pot, I'd say something like 95%. Phil letting him run it 4 times actually earns a little respect from me he knew he was up and could of ended that guy's dreams but at least gave him a chance
@@Jan_Eberhartnot really. He's decreasing his chances. At the time of the call, Phil had approximately an 85% chance to win. If they run it once, it stays at 85%. If they run it twice, the odds are (approximately) 85% * 85% to win both runs, etc.
Vanessa's very humble. So much skill but a lot of luck as well. In the face of such a confident man she didn't drag his pride through the dirt along with his money. Very professional behavior
He over-articulated because he definitely didn't want the dealer to think he said fold. I personally would've thrown a chip in whilst saying "call" just to be safe, or pushed forward my stack.
It's meant to eliminate harsh risk for the favorable. While this video with Helmuth is a bad example it's generally a way to just secure a win. So if I have a 90 % chance of winning , there is still a 10% risk that I will lose it all at once. If you instead run it 4 times (lets say same odds every time 90% to 10%) there is now instead only a risk of 1/10000 that all is lost, even if that means maybe sacrificing a quorter of the winnings etc
Watching the Cannon take three out of four off Hellmuth reminds me of a story Greg Raymer once told when we were playing live PLO, of facing off with Billy Duarte in another PLO ring game. They get it in on the flop, with Billy having a set and flush draw to Fossilman's gutshot. They run them twice and Greg hits the gutshot both times for the scoop.

It has been close to a decade since I’ve watched or played poker. This “run it 3 times” is COMPLETELY new to me. When did they implement this into the game?
That is for live cash games only, typically with high stakes. If the players agree, they will "run it" x-number of times from the spot when all the chips went in. It acts as a bit of luck protection for both players (best hand reduces the chance to lose everything to a bad beat, worst hand increases the chance to get at least a fraction of the pot). It has been around for a while, but most televised poker is tournaments (where it's not allowed) and plebs like us don't play cash games with blinds of $100+, so it's not seen too much.
