The "That" is mentioned a number of times.Its in the way Jim wrote the lyric.
During the song there are lines like
"But I’ll never forget the way you feel right now-oh no-no way
(And I would do anything for love)
(But I won’t do that)
No-I won’t do that"
If you lose the lines of that lyric that i put in brackets it makes sense
And at the end when the girl is asking him all the questions his reply is always "I can do that" Yet despite all that the girl says
" I know the territory, I’ve been around
It’ll all turn to dust and we’ll all fall down
Sooner or later you’ll be screwing around"
And his reply."I wont do that"
Meatloaf is one of my favorite singers. Do a lyric break down and he actually tells what he wouldn't do right before he says but I won't do that. Fun not when I was in high school I tried out for drum major for our marching band. We had to find a recording of a song to conduct as part of our try out. I found a recording of this song and went a step further and put together an arrangement of this for the marching band to play. I didn't win the try out but that's a story for another day.
P.S. itold my ex-wife that my safe word is actually Meatloaf because it means I would do anything for love but I won't do that.
its been so long no one will read this but the whole point of the song is that he doesnt feel he good enough for her she feels he's bound to cheat on her & forget about her ultimately what ever stereotype of males & females & relationships have. The video is suppose to be opera meets beauty & the beast meets modern times. The woman in the video I believe was a big name day time soap opera actress & the woman who's voices the female part tour often I believe with Meatloaf most of their careers but clearly should was an amazing singer in her own right & a beautiful & unique female voice. The end of the video leads into the next it's a 3 video soap opera basicly if I remember right.

Maggie, don't forget when he recorded this he was roughly 50 yrs old and that many years takes a toll on the voice.

This song describes a mans heart, when he's truly in love, better than any other song ever performed in my opinion.
If you listen carefully, before each chorus he says what he won't do. There is no "That", it is several differnt things he won't do that he spells out right before each chorus. For example:
But I’ll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life, no way
And I would do anything for love
Oh I would do anything for love
Oh I would do anything for love
But I won’t do that, no I won’t do that
So in this part of the song he says that he won't stop dreaming of her every night, and "That" is thing he won't do.
Another example near the beginning of the song:
But I'll never forget the way you feel right now,
Oh no, no way.
And I would do anything for love,
But I won't do that
No I won't do that
In this part of the song the "That" is he will never forget the way that she feels.
I hope this makes sense now. There is no singular "that", it is simply stating that he won't do the thing he just said he wouldn't do.
Lorraine Crosby (born 27 November 1960) is an English singer and songwriter. She was the female vocalist on Meat Loaf's 1993 hit single "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)". Her debut album, Mrs Loud was released in 2008.
This is the reason why i cent never listen to a live version of this song. Lorain Crosby realy makes this song and no other woman comes close to her.

Ellen Foley sang the backing vocals for Paradise By The Dashboard Light for the Bat Out Of Hell album. But she declined to go on tour. She was replaced with Karla DeVito, who appeared in the single’s music video and lip synced to Foley’s vocals.

The actual title for "On a hot summer night " is "You Took the Words Right Out of my Mouth (Hot Summer Night) "

"That" is the stuff he specifically said he wouldn't do in the preceding verse (never lie to you, never forgive myself, never do it better, never stop dreaming, etc). It's literally the lyrics of the song and he's gone to great lengths in the past to clarify this, using visual aids even lol

There's a live version that's pretty fun. Be careful choosing which live performances of his to watch, some are way better than others, often depending on who the female vocalist is and their chemistry together, Paradise by Dashboard Light will rock your world. The female vocalist in this is Lorraine Crosby, she does a great job. She reminds me of Bonnie Tyler, who did an album of Jim Steinman songs (Total Eclipse of the Heart was a big hit).
Heh some trivia, this was the most expensive music video ever made at the time, directed by Michael Bay.

*cough* Diana Ankudinova's cover of Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling In Love. It's the culmination of training to get back her full head voice. When her voice first changed and transformed her into the contralto we all know she became really insecure up in full head voice. She would either use falsetto or her very characteristic yodel technique to access head voice. This cover is done in a minor key instead of major to complement her very dramatic way of singing. Less of a love song than the descent of obsession into madness. We get to hear a brand new belting sound from her now as well. Yusif Eyvazov, the husband of Anna Netrebko was a guest judge. He practically jumped out of his seat during the performance.
Love your videos. His make up with the long nails is to make him look like a monster, a vampire. lyrics hold me down in holy water, direct vampire reference, smashing mirrors, again a vampire thing. The scene where she is laying across the bed and two other women crawl over the edge is from at least two vampire movies. He loves her but he won't turn her into a vampire, a monster, which is how he sees himself, remember smashing mirrors.
I think he got his first exposure as a character on Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I bought the CD when it came out when I was 14. As I can remember, she labeled as Mrs Voice or Mrs Loud on the cover.
Ironically the elements you mentioned are Exactly what he was going for! Beauty and the Beast Phantom of the Opera and a darker gothic/vampire feel. Michael/Meatloaf would feel proud/fulfilled hearing your description.
one of the greatest music videos of all time. Shout out to the wildly inconsistent Michael Bay, director of THE ROCK, ARMAGEDDON, and TRANSFORMERS. Those are his most enduring movies and this is his most enduring video.
This was the 1993 album bat out of Hell II. Almost 20 years after his debut. Meatloaf had stressed his voice to the breaking point and completely blew it out almost to the point where he couldn't talk. he had to completely relearn how to sing and how to not injure his voice again. The Vibrato is one of the things he learned to not over stress his voice. he did not do that on bat out of Hell 1

Another song for you to react to of Meatloaf's is, Bat Out Of Hell. The power of his voice is tremendous. He is one of my favourite American Singers. He has so many big song. Another one is For Crying Out Loud.
His first major hits involved duets with Ellen Foley, who was replaced in the videos. His songwriter also wrote Total Eclipse of the Heart and another hit for Bonnie Tyler as well as one for Air Supply. Both he and Meatloaf died recently.

There's Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. Then there's Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf. they went together like PB & J. Jim wrote a LOT of songs for other artists as well. If I'm not mistaken, he wrote Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Celine Dion's All Coming Back To Me, and a few others I can't remember.

It’s a song about sorrow, loneliness, and moving on. I think something terrible happens to his love interest that he feels responsible for, and now he’s consumed by grief and self-recrimination (maybe even self-hatred?). So he experiences the full emotional spectrum around grief, the loss, the pain, the pleading, the anger, the desperation, the need for closure, and the guilt that keeps him from accepting it. Being alone in the house I think represents him isolating himself, feeling like a monster and hiding from reality, at least until she (or the memory of her) barges in and forces him to confront his feelings and begin the healing process.
He's gone now. RIP king.

He released this back in the 70’s and then re-released it in the early 90’s. This the version from 1993. The back up singer in this version is Lorraine Crosby.
They didn't release this in the 70s.Some of the other songs on Bat 2 were taken from Jims 1981 Bad for Good album but AFL is not one of them.
This one was on Bat Out Of Hell 2: Back Into Hell and was released in 93.

I strongly reccomend listening to the full 12 minute version on the album. The music video is best described, imo, as a highlight reel of the different beats in the song. Speaking of which, the song's writer (Jim Steinman) was against cutting the song so short for radio edits because this was essentially his baby. In the end he managed to do a decent 4 minute radio edit but damn, did it not do the song justice.
To me this video has a very beauty and the beast vibe. It's one of my favorites along with his Paradise by the Dashboard Lights

Also, you mention Phantom of the Opera. Right around the time this song came out in '93, there were rumors that Meat Loaf was going to be cast as the Phantom at the theater in Toronto. Of course I was 13 believed what most people said. But I still like to remember this rumor as being something that almost happened. He'd have been an incredible phantom.

at the end she sings that after a while you will forget everything and he will he see its time to move on and also he will be screwing around and he said he wont do that.

Before Meat Loaf recorded this, he was concerned people wouldn't understand what he would'nt do for love. I still don't know. That might be Marion Raven's voice (the woman who sang "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" with him.
So what is "that"? "It's the line before every chorus," explained Meat Loaf. "There's nine of them, I think. The problem lies because Jimmy likes to write, so you forget what the line was before you get to 'I won't do that.'" This is half of the song. I implore you to check out the album (full) version. They didn't even record this short version separately, they literally cut huge bits out of the album version and mixed it together. Sacrilege!

When I first played this CD I was concerned that something was wrong with my copy. Like it may have been manufactured incorrectly. Turns out that it was "the artist's stylistic choice". Another note: The woman in the video is not the voice of the woman in the video. Both are amazing, not the same girl.

I think it would be fun to have you react to a Tenacious D song. My recommendations would be “Tribute” and “Kickapoo” (featuring fantastic appearance from both Meatloaf and Ronnie James Dio). There’s also “Wonderboy” and “F**k Her Gently,” though I feel like that second one wouldn’t be as appropriate for your viewers as you seem to have more of a PG rated vibe on this channel. But the vocals are great on that one and its my favorite song to sing along to in the car.
