      Sara is right all Royalty around the world has stood on the backs of others. Slavery isn’t unique to only Blacks. Every civilization had slavery some cultures tortures their slaves as entertainment. Indigenous People should get their land back along with money. Stop accepting people from China just buying land here with their inflated currency. Chinese have no business here unless your family came during the farming boom. The new Chinese are so respectful to the land and history here.

The Spanish and Africans brought the first diseases and it killed thousands of Africans. They also took native Americans as slaves. Yes, the topic was about Jamaica but if it were on a Latin American country it would be called to then also speak on all the other countries. I understand why you might think the common denominator is the black community but even within the black community, there is prejudice against the Asian community. And its ignorance like that is preventing progress. To make a generalized comment about anti-blackness in India is the very thinking that is still causing prejudice and racism to continue. Why don't black people ever cry out for reparations from black people who captured and sold black people?
      Black people were victims AND participants in the practice of enslavement.
      Why don't black people realize pale people have also been enslaved and stop trying to bully pale people into fixing issues within black cultures that ONLY black communities can fix themselves?
      And, why don't black people acknowledge what pale people have done against slavery EVERY time they speak about the practice?
      Finally, it is tacky to attack a dead person and thier family no matter what shade they be. And, no amount of money will fix what is wrong (it would make it worse).
      But, then again, it is ok to hurt people as long as they are white. Because, Northern Europeans don't have feelings. And, black people should expect the descendants of pale people to fix them forever more.
      The black culture is the issue, the cause of the problems, NOW. Change your culture, change your life.
      Things will not get better within black communities if these mental problems persist.
      Take off the victim hat and leave the pale people be.
      Change the culture that keeps one mentally enslaved.

    Thank you for the conversation ladies; Whoopi, Sarah and Joy hit the nail on the head - its people not wanting to admit wrongness or that their ancestors did something bad. The fact that the empowered or wealthy have done (and continue to) take advantage of 'slavery' (in its many forms) is wrong - all humans have a right to their own being, and that includes owning up to their errors. I have been fortunate to be able to take my family history back to the 1700's and we were, for the most part, maids/ house workers or railway workers; having to pay anyone for the atrocities is abhorrent and shouldn't happen anywhere - I (also from the UK) had to pay taxes for this that I did not agree with. Language and labels hold power continuing to wide brush with "the British" is the same has saying "Americans" (as other comments have pointed out). ACTION Calls for acknowledgment, for ALL this affect/ effects is the first step and then working together towards positive steps forward.

      Privilege is not a racist topic.
      Look at all the upper classes in South America and Africa exploiting their fellow countrymen.
      Or the Russian oligarchs.

      Which is, every human who can help another besides him or herself should do that.

    • @blazinga1200
      @blazinga1200 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@fbenbow2197 I would agree, privilege is not a racist topic, depending upon the context. According to what you just stated, the South Americans and Africans are enjoying privilege within their own countries, with people who look primarily like them. Let those same South Americans and Africans come to the United States and see if they enjoy those same privileges. I can tell you right now, they won't. Why is that? Because there is a form of privilege that reigns supreme-worldwide, but especially in certain diverse countries-where only one specific ethnic group benefits. And that is the context in which this conversation about the British is being had. And if you say otherwise, you're in denial and not wanting to recognize the issue for what it is. It's not the focus on race that is the issue here. It's ignoring the fact that racism is still deeply embedded in the hearts of men, and their decisions, actions, and words showcase this time and time again. THAT is the issue. We are never going to make progress and move forward until we uproot this systemic privilege that helps some but hurts others. This is not about shaming white people. Quite frankly, I'm tired of the race issues and race-based wars. But until it's addressed, which yes, means discussing it, it will always be here to haunt us. Prime example, mortgage loan applications are now being approved by mortgage-approval algorithms. One would think if there's no longer an actual human approving or denying a loan applicant sitting across from them or setting the interest rates for their loan, etc., that prejudice-whether conscious or not-would no longer be a factor when an individual goes to apply for a loan. Sadly, that is not the case. Studies have shone that there is a secret bias, more specifically, a racial disparity that is still prevalent in the loan-approval process, even those it's computer programming that's approving the loan and setting rates. Why is that? Because the individuals who created the algorithms were likely prejudice themselves and/or subscribed to the notion of privilege for some but not others depending upon skin color. You can research this for yourself. So yes, there is a problem of racism that still needs to be discussed. It doesn't matter who is perpetuating the racism that warrants shaming, if it's black people then let's address them, if it's white people then let's address them as well. But if you're honest with yourself, you know who the primary culprit is. Ignoring the problem won't make it go away.

The nearest we got to our history was a program that came in tv called ROOTS. That’s when we saw how our ancestors were treated. It was especially the Caribbeans that built the NHS and showed them here about cleanliness and hygiene, rebuilt England after World War Two and fought on the frontlines too. How ironic that that countries that helped England back then, are the county that England fight against now and have the highest fees and regulations for a visa to enter their so called Motherland.
