The plant used in this video is in fact a Thanksgiving cactus, although many would be quick to identify it as a Christmas cactus. All three require similar care for optimal growth and blooms.
I've been blessed with my Mother's Christmas cactus that is over 60 years old. Mom worked hard for decades to get it to bloom and as far as I recall, it never did. When she turned 95, we brought her (and the plant) to our home and without knowing anything about it, I stuck it in a room filled with lots of direct light. It bloomed for a couple of years and Mom was thrilled!!! After Mom's passing, we moved out-of-state and the plant only bloomed once. I greatly appreciate all this wonderful information, because I am hopeful, that with the right light and fertilizer, it will bloom again; if for no other reason than just appreciating the memory of Mom's face when she saw it bloom previously! I don't know how long to anticipate this plant with live, but it's got a whole bunch of miles on it already!
That’s amazing!! My good friend just gifted me a portion of his grandmas plant that she started in the 60s!!! Such awesome memories associated with such a pretty plant
That is wonderful! I have gotten a cutting off my husbands Aunt who actually was 98 last year and still going strong. Got it about 25 or so years ago and the dogs eventually knocked it off and so I made starts and still have one that I am hoping to start quite a few. We have a north facing porch with some eastern exposure which they seem to enjoy. I had used a mix of African Violet and cactus potting soil with a bit of smaller rocks from pea size to Concord grape size (1/4”to 1/2” roundish) its now in a north facing window and is blooming now Feb 18, 2022. Third time and I honestly have not been very regular as we were living in a house that we are still finishing. It’s quite wonderful to have this plant as his aunt is a wonderful person and hers is seriously an oldie! She has shared it with many! I will share and I also will keep one I start as I would be heartbroken if I lost it for good.
I have one that is nearly 55 years old and had the same issue. I find that super bright indirect daytime light during the summer months is what makes mine bloom. It now does it five times a year.
I came across your video through the random serendipity of TH-cam. After watching the video I read a lot of comments and was intrigued by how many of them described a plant that had been passed down from a mother or grandmother. Some of the plants are over 100 years old. Well, I also have a Christmas Cactus that my mother had in a shady patio for decades before she moved to Northern California to be near me when she was in her 90s. She brought the Christmas Cactus with her and gave it to me to take care of. It has only had a few blooms since and looks very ragged. My mother passed away about 8 years ago … at the age of 104 … but her Christmas Cactus is still alive in spite of having none of the conditions or care that you recommend. I am so glad to have learned from you how to bring it back to the glory it once had.
I remember my grandmother’s huge Christmas cacti spilling with gorgeous blooms, and was given 3 beautiful plants this past summer. I loved your presentation, and there were several things I was unaware of. I did feed my cacti in the summer, brought them inside the day before our first freezing cold night, and they live in front of an east facing window. I fed them a small push of a SeaGrow 0-26-26, plus a 4-6-2 fertilizer a few weeks ago. I’ve got 2 blooms forming on one of the 3 plants, and I’m super excited. I’ll put your tips into practice going forward. Thank you, thank you!
My grandmother had a beautiful Christmas cactus. It was over 30 years old. I'll always remember marveling to her about it and how beautiful it was when it bloomed every year.
In my early twenties for my first apartement I bought a pink one and thought, that maybe the year after that I could maybe get one with a color that I like better. I am 61 now, and the pink plant is still here and has produced lots of offspring for my whole family
Mine bloom ever year and here is my secret, I live in zone 7b, they love spending the summers outside. It rains or I water more often and plant in cactus mix not a potting soil.. to make sure they drain well plant in orchid pots. leave them out on cool nights until the temperature starts to drop below 40. Shorter days comes natural, once they're moved inside they start to set buds.
I put mine outside on covered porch all summer so. Move to garage for a few weeks when it starts to freeze out. The buds set then I bring it in and it blooms Christmas and again in spring.
I just got a Christmas cactus. Im great with plants and people ha! May I say you are beautiful! everything about you. Never before on the internet have I ever complimented a guy or felt this way. Hope you have a great Christmas and who ever is special in your life, I hope they give you lots of love. James
Thank you! I have my grandmother's 115 yrs + Christmas cactus. It bloomed one time almost 15 years ago. It's a huge plant, very healthy. My favorite of all my plants! I have it on my front porch in summer and it's a conversation starter!
You aren’t kidding about these plants living a long time, my grandmother who would be 115 if she was still living had both her mother’s & her mother in law’s which they earth got as wedding gift & they were each teenage brides, those holiday cactus plants are still going strong at my aunts house. It’s amazing! They are beautiful! I was watching this because she is going to start one from each plant for me & I wanted to learn how to care for it. This was very informative, thank you!
I have an heirloom plant from my maternal great-grandmother that has salmon-colored flowers and another from my paternal grandmother that is pale lavender. Both have long, tubular flowers that resemble diving birds, very graceful and delicate. I don’t see this style in garden store nowadays. The first one has to be around 100, the other is probably 75. I rescued a cactus from an elderly woman who couldn’t care for it anymore and its flowers are carmine red and rather short-lived blooms but it will bloom twice a year. Then I have an orange one, and a hot pink one, and a cherry-pink one. Question: regarding the 100 year old plant, it produces more flower buds than it can bring to full flower. Many drop off before reaching maturity. You advise us to reduce watering during bloom time. I am experimenting with watering just a bit every other day or so, thinking that the buds were drying out and unable to make it to maturity. This *seems* to be working, although I did trim branches during the growing season to try to encourage branching, and to give away to friends. this may be a factor in a much heavier and longer lasting bloom time this year. If you have any thoughts, I would love to hear them.
I inherited my mother-in-law’s Christmas Cactus, about 60-70 years old and has always abundantly flowered. Gave her to my grand daughter and things went south! I recuperated the poor thing(almost dead) and with lots of TLC she has just given me a flower!! Your advice is wonderful. Thanks
Plants, especially ones so old, are like pets, people must realise they're a living thing which must be nurtured, I'm so glad you were able to rescue it, and hopefully it will thrive again 🌱🌿🌾🍃
My sister has the most beautiful, big Christmas cactus . It blooms every year. She keeps it in a room that gets light from the north only and is used only occasionally. It loves where it lives and it shows. Thank you.
I’ve adopted the responsibility of taking care of my Christmas cacti that are around 100 years old now. They’ve been on my family farm for a couple generations. I’ve had a lot of trials and tribulations trying to take care of these and I felt like a failure… these tips will definitely help me, so thank you!
My very old Holiday cactus has been blooming since November!!! It's still producing buds! This is the first year mine has been blooming continuously and its in a cool room. I also bought a humidifier last fall and my plants are LOVING it! Your channel is great! I'm subscribing!
This is the best video I have seen for every step of care of the schlumbergera! You made it very clear and easy to follow and understand. For years I could not get one to bloom. Then I finally found a place that has plenty of indirect light and enough warmth and it started blooming several times, usually Thanksgiving and around Easter. In the winter, I would put it in my shower where it is in the dark most of the time. (It didn't get much water.). When it started budding, I would take it out again. I think I can take even better care of them now that I have better rules! Thank you.
Very informative! Thank you for the information. I bouggt a Christmas cactus around January 2022, not knowing anything about it, I left it by a sunny window and rarely waters it. It started blooming last month thanks to the naturally cold Minnesota weather and long nights. Now I'm learning more about it from you!
End of March here in Western Colorado. Put my CC in the pantry for the winter, cold but plenty of sun, didn't water much. Last week buds popped out all over. I was shocked. Gave it a drink, moved it to kitchen window so I can enjoy the flowers. Did not plan this at all but so happy. Love your videos.
I loved this video. I live in central PA, and just got a small red Christmas cactus from my neighbor. I love the blue tapestry behind you. I will probably be watching this over again.
This is one of my most favorite plants. I have all colors, but would love one of the old time Purple ones. My Mom had the purple many years ago. A lady posted the purple a few weeks ago that had belonged to her Grandmother. Thank you for your valuable video. God bless🙏🏼 I summer mine outdoors and use orchid bark for soil.
Devini was gifted with a beautiful red outdoor Xmas cactus.it floured twice ... before it started to decline. I allowed a caregiver to repot ...she first cut in half themcame back and tore the half apart... Ian trying to keep two sprigs alive. I never thought of bringing it inside. My shaded west balcony may get too warm... I’d like to buy another don’t see them here in Hi.
Used to buy these from K Mart after they lost their flowers for less than half price. Many hybrid versions, I used a home made Cymbidium mix. As I remember they were grown by growers in Half Moon Bay in Northern California. I put 3 plants in 8 inch plastic pots, I live in Southern California and had them outdoors under shade cloth. Scotts Super Bloom was my go to fertilizer for all my blooming plants.
After watching the video about Christmas cactus, I feel extremely delighted and touched by the beauty of this plant. The video has helped me gain new knowledge about how to care for and decorate Christmas cactus during the holiday season. The images and information presented in the video demonstrate the delicacy and diligence in taking care of the Christmas cactus. From watering, pruning, to fertilizing, everything is done with love and meticulous care. I am also impressed with the way the Christmas cactus was decorated in the video. The LED lights and decorative accessories used created a warm and colorful festive atmosphere. The Christmas cactus is not only a decorative plant, but also a creative and impressive work of art. I am very grateful for the opportunity to watch this video and learn new knowledge about Christmas cactus. I hope to apply this knowledge to better care for my own plant and decorate a beautiful Christmas cactus in the upcoming holiday season.
My two plants have gone crazy this year... beautiful flowers and abundant! I never use a bag however I do agree that the coolness helps to create blooms. Informative video thank you!
Great video. I have tons of new, baby plants (as well as big ones) in various shades from yellow to dark pink. Why do I have so many??? I have 3 cats and my neighbor has a cat, they are all about the same age, 3 years, and they love to "play" with the blossoms. So, I wake up in the morning and find branches and blossoms scattered around the house. I stick them in water, root them, and put them in small plastic pots and take them to my local food bank where they are a big hit. I have to keep my more precious plants, like the one my sister gave me about 30 years ago, high up to decrease the temptation of these little monsters.
Our cats do the same!!! Those low hanging bouncing branches are such a temptation!! Thanks for posting about sending the newly grown plants to a food bank! As soon as we have some we will do the same! Everyone needs a growing plant or two in their home! Beauty makes people serene
My "Christmas" cactus is still blooming. It started back in mid November and has been in bloom ever since. Last year it done the same with the last flower falling off the first week of May believe it or not.
Wonderful video. I have some of these abd have successfully bloomed them but decided to watch several videos as a refresher and to see of there was anything new I could learn. Your video is one of my favorites. Very thorough but easy to understand
This information is so useful! Even though I live in a subtropical climate in the southern hemisphere, your explanation about flowering and care make so much sense! I've had mine in the wrong part of the house getting too much hot westerly afternoon sun. I know where to move it to now and hopefully it will start to look a whole lot healthier! Thank you so much.
Great video sir; just what I needed because at my home I did not do the plants justice. Now I will do so thanks to your advices. I am really happy. Thank you again.
Hi there from South Africa! This was by far THE BEST care and tips video I've ever watched on Christmas Cactus. Thank you so much! I'm hitting that subscribe button right now!❤
I just came across your video. I lost my gorgeous full Christmas cactus last February due to an unexpected and unseasonable freeze.😞 I missed it enough that this Christmas I went searching for one and bought 6. Nursery messed up somehow with theirs because they lost all their blooms so close to Christmas. They figured no one would buy and they reduced price on all. I gifted 4 to sisters and I kept 2. Color of blooms will be a surprise to us all next year. Thank you for such a great video.
I purchased two at the grocery store a few years ago, they were on sale because the plant manger gave out incorrect advice, so many complaints it was decided that holiday cacti don't grow where we live,it is very dry here and cold during the Winter. Mine are doing fine, their lose our gain.
I'd love to see y'all's 100+ year old cactuses. I got two leaves/stems from a friend earlier this year. She now has her 21st leave starting. I love her 😁
What a great video! Thank you SO MUCH. A lover gave me a cutting (lovers will give you cuttings of these delicious plants) and it began to grow. Now 18 months later, I am giving it the 'cool room little water little light' treatment that you recommend. I only started in on this a couple of days ago, mid-November but I am hoping perhaps by Xmas or New Year's or in dingy snowy January, I will have blooms! Thank you so much for your contribution here, you explain everything with vim and vigor and love and your enthusiasm is infectious!
Mine flowers in abundance with it’s blooms opening during Mother’s Day week. (Sydney Australia) Present to self. Thanks for the care tips and the origin of the plant 😊
Very informative video. I have 3 of these plants - 2 Christmas, and 1 Easter. All of them are 5 years and older. They flower yearly, and I try to propagate them (but not with too much luck). This video provided me with some useful information. Thank you.
Hi Devan. Ran across your channel and loved it! Not only do you cover important information but you make it interesting and exciting. Can’t wait to learn more about my new found hobby! Sending you warm Spring wishes🤗🌻🌷🌷
Devin, love your vidéo. I wish I’d watched this before overwatering my cactus. What can I do now to save my new cactus. It was FULL of flowers and buds when in bought it about 3 weeks ago and I have now nothing left and the soil is very damp. What can I do to save my cactus?
Sometimes that just happens transitioning from locations. I’d place it in a bright spot for a few weeks and allow it to get a bit drier. Then you can move it to a cooler, slightly shadier location so it can bud up again
My grandma had giant Christmas cactus and in September she would move it to her spare room with no heat and barely no light. Then in the last of November she brought them back out to the bright room.
I think this is the only solution, but if you have central heating like I do, you only have hot rooms in the winter. My only recourse would be to leave my two outside where they would have limited light and much colder temps, but the cold desert air would probably kill them. Sigh. I guess they will never bloom. :/
@@oceans.and.deserts We have central heating as well , and where we live it is very dry, the mountainous West.I put our plants on top of an appliance inside a cabinet at dusk during the Winter. It is cold enough to keep potatoes from producing chlorophyll, (that is when potatoes are dangerous) and dark inside the cabinet. Also away from curious cats! I hope this helps, leaving them outside during the Winter in the Desert would be cold enough for them to freeze!
@@christinemeleg4535 Thanks! I'm in the SW (high desert). I keep my bananas in a lower kitchen cabinet that stays much colder than my hot house in the cold months as it's on an exterior wall. I'm not sure I'd want to clear out a cabinet and move my 2 plants in and out daily, though. They're medium size now, so they'd take up a lot of space. We'll see next year. I appreciate your advice.

My mom had a Christmas flower for yrs.
That is wonderful! I have gotten a cutting off my husbands Aunt who actually was 98 last year and still going strong. Got it about 25 or so years ago and the dogs eventually knocked it off and so I made starts and still have one that I am hoping to start quite a few. Can you please tell me the best fertilizer to use.
I have one that is nearly 55 years old and had the same issue. I find that super bright indirect daytime light during the summer months is what makes mine bloom. It now does it five times a year.
I’m moving all of my holiday cacti to the cool living room now!!!

I am very grateful for the opportunity to watch this video and learn new knowledge about Christmas cactus. I hope to apply this knowledge to better care for my own plant and decorate a beautiful Christmas cactus in the upcoming holiday season.
😁
My Christmas cactus blooms at Easter, too. Never done anything except give it a drink, put it on kitchen sill, had it years.
wow!! green thumbs!
@@plantvibrations Not really, just good with things which thrive on neglect! 😉
Interesting tips. Thanks for sharing your video
Thanks for watching!!
It is very helpful clip, thanks
Thanks for watching
My two plants have gone crazy this year... beautiful flowers and abundant! I never use a bag however I do agree that the coolness helps to create blooms. Informative video thank you!
I tend to just put mine in a dark corner rather use a bag!
Haha that’s amazing! Thanks for sharing your story!
Our cats do the same!!! Those low hanging bouncing branches are such a temptation!! Thanks for posting about sending the newly grown plants to a food bank! As soon as we have some we will do the same! Everyone needs a growing plant or two in their home! Beauty makes people serene
That's such a brillant idea.😀
Thank you
My "Christmas" cactus is still blooming. It started back in mid November and has been in bloom ever since. Last year it done the same with the last flower falling off the first week of May believe it or not.
Yes mine does the same thing. It is in its 3rd bloom. It blooms at least 4 times.

Mine does the same thing except mine start to flower a week after New Years and they stop around the middle of June.
Wonderful video. I have some of these abd have successfully bloomed them but decided to watch several videos as a refresher and to see of there was anything new I could learn. Your video is one of my favorites. Very thorough but easy to understand
That makes me so happy to hear!! I’m glad it was easy to follow, that’s my goal, make growing plants easy and accessible !
Thank you, I can't wait to treat mine and see if she flowers.
Awesome! I hope it helped!
great information thank you
Thanks for watching!!
Best video ever. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Yes give it a try!! They don’t need the intense sun like other succulents/cacti
Great video sir; just what I needed because at my home I did not do the plants justice. Now I will do so thanks to your advices. I am really happy. Thank you again.
fantastic! i hope it helped
@@plantvibrations we; ll have to find out still but yes I am sure about it.

I bought mine at an estate sale over 50 years ago. It’s still blooming in late February.
Very nice!
Hi,i came back to say thank you for all your tips. My cactus is in full bloom now! Great videos
ThAts fabulous!! Love it
fabulous , thank you
Thanks for watching!
Awesome 👌
Yesss!
Wow that’s awesome!! I wish I had room for six more in my house!!
This was an awesome video. It was fast paced and to the point. Exactly what I wanted to hear when I clicked on the title.
love hearing that! thanks fro watching
I'd love to see y'all's 100+ year old cactuses. I got two leaves/stems from a friend earlier this year. She now has her 21st leave starting. I love her 😁
My heirloom is just budding up right now!!
Now I'm going to save my cactus
🥳🥳
What a great video! Thank you SO MUCH. A lover gave me a cutting (lovers will give you cuttings of these delicious plants) and it began to grow. Now 18 months later, I am giving it the 'cool room little water little light' treatment that you recommend. I only started in on this a couple of days ago, mid-November but I am hoping perhaps by Xmas or New Year's or in dingy snowy January, I will have blooms! Thank you so much for your contribution here, you explain everything with vim and vigor and love and your enthusiasm is infectious!
Sweeeeet! Yes let it stay there until you start to see some buds forming! I think you’re in for a nice blooming show this winter
the part with the bag reminded me of the Unknown Comic! Good posting.
Heheh thanks for watching
Love your channel

great! i hope it was helpful!
Christmas cactus are gorgeous plants! Even without flowers. Very interesting didn't know they need a long period of darkness to bloom!
Yes you are right, even without flowers they're some of my favorite succulents!
Oh
I have Never put mine in darkness and they bloom profusely!
Thanks for the info.
Thanks for watching!
Thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial, great tips to induce flowering. Going to try propagating mine now. Thank you
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Oh, your plants are lush - thanks for the tips. And hopefully, I can use them to help my cactus feel better and stop drooping.❤️👏🌈🌈❤️
Big part of it is to place outside in the warm months!
Thank you for your tips, so that I Can do for May Christmas cactus
Devin, love your vidéo. I wish I’d watched this before overwatering my cactus. What can I do now to save my new cactus. It was FULL of flowers and buds when in bought it about 3 weeks ago and I have now nothing left and the soil is very damp. What can I do to save my cactus?
Sometimes that just happens transitioning from locations. I’d place it in a bright spot for a few weeks and allow it to get a bit drier. Then you can move it to a cooler, slightly shadier location so it can bud up again
Thank you for your tips
hope they helped!
@@plantvibrations i will let you know 😊 I have a easter cactus and a Christmas one. They flowered when I got them so hopefully they will again.
Thank you for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching :)
Wonderful, fantastic job with the Christmas cactus, starting new ones. Great Ideas. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!!
My grandma had giant Christmas cactus and in September she would move it to her spare room with no heat and barely no light. Then in the last of November she brought them back out to the bright room.
I bet she had amazing floral displays on her plants!!
