My sister and I used to go to the flower area of grocery stores and ask for the dying plants. We'd take them home to see if they survived. Sometimes, we had to pay for a pot. Bought a Christmas Cactus for 10 cents. It kept her happy she had a whole room for her, orchids, Cactus, and other greenery.

I have a Thanksgiving cactus from maybe 12 years ago and a Christmas cactus that I rescued and revived when we moved into our home last year. It was neglected and ignored in a shed. I saw it when we visited the house when it was for sale. I told it I would save it if we got the place and we did! It bloomed hot pink flowers for me. I can't wait to propagate more using this method!
The Purple flowered Lantana species is L. montevidensis. It's habit is to cascade, so I have always used it to hang over walls and such. Thanks for the tutorial! Happy gardening! :)
I do the same thing with paper towels in a ziplock bag. Sit them on top of the warmth of my refrigerator. And to force them to bloom I put them on my dark cool closet for 14 hrs at a time, for 6 to 8 weeks works every time.

Good work - I’ll have to try this with my Christmas cactus which is over 50 years old and used to belong to my beloved grandma. It used to be so lush and happy, and flowered every year, but has been upset at me for a while. I don’t want it to die since it reminds me of my dear grandma. I think that may be an Easter cactus though.
Since I’ve stopped using compost in my potting soil, all of my potted plants - including my Christmas/Easter cactus - are looking and growing much better. I use a combination of coarse sand, peat moss, and perlite for my current mix. The compost is reserved for a top dressing, not mixed in with the soil itself. This eliminates a lot of the root rot and overwatering issues that I used to have. Unfortunately, most commercial potting mixes contains compost and/or shredded wood products, so I no longer use them and make my own instead (which is also actually cheaper). The commercial potting mixes are great for the first six months to a year, then the plants seem to start declining as the organic material breaks down and becomes toxic. This requires you to repot your plants yearly, which is great for the potting soil manufacturers who get to sell more product, but it gets far too expensive. The only caveat to this method is that the plants need to be fed on a regular basis as there’s little nutritional value in my mix.
@@jtl73 i’m still refining the mix, as I only started it this past year, so it’s basically a work in progress. Currently, I use (approximately) 2 parts peat moss to 1 part sand and 1 part perlite. For additional drainage (such as for succulents) I add some poultry grit and cut back just a bit on the peat moss. The poultry grit (or pumice) would be a good addition all of the time, but I’m still trying to find an affordable source which is why I use it sparingly right now. I’m sure that this is far from the optimal mix, and I’ll continue to refine it as time goes by, but it’s already amazing how much better my plants are doing without added compost. A couple of years ago I wouldn’t have believed that plants could thrive without a generous amount of organic material mixed into the soil - i guess we’ve all been conditioned to think that way. Just be aware that with this mix, the plants will need watering more often, and feeding as well, since there are really no nutrients in it. I should also note that thus far, my houseplants have had none of the fungus gnats that used to plague them. I’m guessing that this is due to the lack of decomposing material in the soil (I don’t even top dress my houseplants with compost, only my outdoor plants). Hopefully, this is a bonus benefit that will continue as well.

No sé plantan en tierra. El sustrato ideal es mantillo de pino y perlita gruesa (sin polvo). 50% y 50%. Se mezcla bien y se planta en eso. Necesitan buena humedad ambiente y calor, y luz muy intensa. Florecen en otoño.

My Christmas cactus is over 30 years old…..it belonged to my late mam & dad. I propagate it very similar to this for the rest of the family 🙂
But isn't it too late to propagate it outdoors now with the paper towels? We live in MS and the paper towels would dry out.
I have my grandma’s which is about 50 years old, except it isn’t so happy with me right now and I’ve got to figure out how to make it smile again.

The trick is to not let the paper towel dry out. The high humidity encourages root & stem growth. So, depends where you live & temps.
