I think the engine drop in power to 94 was mainly to make it possible to sell an A2 variant which is not a bad thing, if it was around about a grand cheaper it'd be amazing deal, right now though it fits into that weird spot between cheap 650s like the Mt07, Ninja 650, Sv650 and the middle size nakeds you mentioned, which most of have something over the Tuono, due to this I don't think they're biting into either market as much as they could

It's really as simple as a different map, the engine is the same otherwise. The A2 compliant map weirdly is lacking in the midrange compared to the full fat map. But it has to be homologated and registered as 70 kW to be able to be sold as an A2 model. There's not only a power limit but also a (power-to-) weight limit. So the map has to account for all of that and ensure it doesn't breach the limit in any area whilst obviously getting as close to it as possible - might it be there is also a torque limit of some kind? This chassis with a 3 cylinder version of the V4 would be very interesting. Supposedly a 400 cc bike is next for Aprilia, but the new Supersport regs must be enticing to them also. An 800 cc V3 producing upwards of 140 bhp paired with Aprilia's chassis dynamics would be a good starting point for the right teams and riders.
Maybe use a 3-cylinder from MV Agusta or Triumph then. I don't think a V3 would have any advantages over the V4 at all. Probably not any cheaper or much lighter.
@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 packaging is the only advantage, but barely really. It's more a matter of branding really, like Ducati with its twin pulse V4. Also a V3 would be unique.
@@anxiousappliance The 660 only uses the combustion chamber and valve arrangement from the V4. Even then the specs are obviously different. I think I saw the lead engineer quoted as saying only the spark plug is the same. As a "parallel" twin the 660 won't as easily transform back to a V engine. Removing only one of the cylinders from the V4 wouldn't be that hard. Some racing series spec a 750cc formula by disabling one of the cylinders from a 1000 cc four cylinder superbike. A V3 could just be a factory engineered version of this, perhaps with a slightly longer stroke.
@@anxiousappliance The math doesn't add up for the twin to be the V4 cut in half. The V4 is 1100cc, which would translate to a 550cc twin. There's an extra 109 cc coming from somewhere.
If it had a 900cc engine like the Shiver upgraded to at least 115hp it would be a strong contender. Now i think it is up against MT-07, Trident etc and therefore too expensive even if it is a premium bike. But Aprilia makes great quality bikes, no doubt.
agreed I don't think it sits with mt 09 or the duke, if fits more like mt07 and trident although being more powerful. actually another 15-20 hp would be perfect for this bike...... you get used to the power fairly quickly, my 890 r seemed wicked fast when i first got it but now seems fairly normal....... so much so am looking at super duke or tuono v4...... its easy to back off when you want but you cant add what you dont have.... after awhile on the big bike would probably want a smaller one again, lol....... we always want change think the next genre of bikes will be relaxed sportbikes with twin motors, full fairings or sportier sport touring bikes.. .. having low end torque is far more useful on the street vs screaming an inline 4 to 15k rpms
The Shiver lives on as a Chinese project and they are targeting 110+ bhp. It mostly likely won't come here, unless they revive the Gilera branding here too.
Now that the Honda Hornet and Suzuki GSX-8S are now here, priced so much cheaper ( and probably more reliable), would this still be a viable choice Neevesy? I've got CB1000R 2019 plus model at the moment, but looking for something lighter and just as fun 😊
Even though the new styling is INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL, the real bargain from all perspectives when it comes to the Tuono is still the V4 1100 RR. Especially in Sachsenring Red. It’s a more complete motorcycle, especially for street riding and not much track use.
Nice honest review. I was thinking of trading in my newish BMW r1250GS in for a Street Triple as I'm mainly doing 45-minute comutes and much of my riding is urban. Then I saw that many reviewers are saying that the Tuono is better, more comfortable, better handling, etc. What are your thoughts? Would you go for the RS rather than the R, even if I am not going to do track riding? I prefer the rev counter and the mirrors on the R. Took the RS out for a ride in Paris and loved it other than that those details.
I have to assume he means the KTM 890 performance-wise is similar to the MT-09 but "a little bit perkier". I love my 890 R, but I will say having a bit of fairing (like, say, the Street Triple or this Tuono) makes a difference. I added the 270mm Powerbronze screen to the KTM and that does help a lot.
Great bike but why aren’t Aprilia doing an A2 bike. They do an A2 bike on the RS so why not on the Tuono . My son set his heart on one for when he passed his A2 , he’s even saved the cash for it.
It's not really an equivalent to the 650's, which all make around 60-70hp and cost a lot less. To be fair, it kind of sits in it's own hybrid category without much direct comparison - probably best to compare a little from either category.
I do love that countryside ride around Great Gidding, Winwick, Old Weston at the edge of Cambridgeshire... Good filming. Please take care going through those narrow road villages.
this thing needs a serious torque and power update atleast in 10-20 more numbers as starting bid to make it feel good in india it costs 21,700 usd 🙄🙄🙄🙄 who the hell buys it at that point
Z900 is around 5th or 6th place in the ranking of agility of this category of bikes. KTM 890, Street triple 675, Tuono 660, GSR 750 are more nimble than the Z900. Z900 not the last of the category in 2021 but far from the best. @@rightwingsafetysquad9872 packaging is the only advantage, but barely really. It's more a matter of branding really, like Ducati with its twin pulse V4.
Also a V3 would be unique.
They cut a V4 in half for the 660, not sure they can carve out the third cylinder. The triangle triple?
Very informative, thank you!
How does it compare to the old KTM Duke 690 ?
Still lacking power?
Great review as always.
Tnx...
Tuono or Duke? Which suits better for trips or for an 8 hours ride? Which is the most comfortable?
Well at least it’s the prettiest
Hardly fair to compare to 900cc bikes. The comparison should be to similar sized models. Pricing is a separate issue
Sounds nice for a twin. Better than my ER6 any way.
270 crank vs the 180 in your Kwakka ;)
If it had a 900cc engine like the Shiver upgraded to at least 115hp it would be a strong contender. Now i think it is up against MT-07, Trident etc and therefore too expensive even if it is a premium bike. But Aprilia makes great quality bikes, no doubt.
agreed I don't think it sits with mt 09 or the duke, if fits more like mt07 and trident although being more powerful. actually another 15-20 hp would be perfect for this bike...... you get used to the power fairly quickly, my 890 r seemed wicked fast when i first got it but now seems fairly normal....... so much so am looking at super duke or tuono v4...... its easy to back off when you want but you cant add what you dont have.... after awhile on the big bike would probably want a smaller one again, lol....... we always want change
think the next genre of bikes will be relaxed sportbikes with twin motors, full fairings or sportier sport touring bikes.. .. having low end torque is far more useful on the street vs screaming an inline 4 to 15k rpms
The Shiver lives on as a Chinese project and they are targeting 110+ bhp. It mostly likely won't come here, unless they revive the Gilera branding here too.
What about reliability. Are there some reports of problems?
Too restricted by basing the engine on half the v4 I guess - as a 750 this and the RS would be far better. Otoh, still a gem of a bike.
Now that the Honda Hornet and Suzuki GSX-8S are now here, priced so much cheaper ( and probably more reliable), would this still be a viable choice Neevesy? I've got CB1000R 2019 plus model at the moment, but looking for something lighter and just as fun 😊
I don't see any other reviewers saying this is weak or lacks fun factor, quite the contrary. Not hooligan enough for MCN though...
Zx10r and rsv4 review where :(
Coming soon...
Even though the new styling is INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL, the real bargain from all perspectives when it comes to the Tuono is still the V4 1100 RR. Especially in Sachsenring Red. It’s a more complete motorcycle, especially for street riding and not much track use.
Yes and the softer Sachs suspension should make it a bit more forgiving to ride on the street. The RR is at the top of my list for a new bike.
@@samiam5326 I think it is the best bike a money can buy, right now. Especially in its price range, there is no real competition.
You didn't mention the slightly cheap feeling suspension which jumped off bumps and caused loss of front end confidence. Fine on smooth roads though.
So not a bike for Yorkshire in the U.K. then 😅. More potholes than a field full of gophers.
@@bikermike_mars1372 Or the South East tbf.
RS/Tuono looks more exciting and sounds amazing with an sc project or an arrow system, super light weight
Its a great bike but if you want the real deal get it's big brother.👍
The motorcycle industry: we want more power at least 200hp.
Consumer: we want less power and more usable on road
Michael, Waiting for your new monster review to finalize my buying desicion on this segment
Coming soon...
Surely the bikes it should be compared with are the trident 660 and mt-07 not the mt-09, street triple and ktm 790.
But it's 2.5k more than the Trident and MT07
He's comparing bikes in a similar price range NOT with similar cc's - makes sense.
Is there a review of the Tuono 660 Factory in the pipeline. Seems a better bike.
It only got slighly bettee fork and shock
Hardly a different bike
So the street triple is better than this bike ?
Naked bike with a fairing. Is this a whole new class?
Was this filmed in Oxfordshire?
This was filmed on the B660 Northants/Cambs borders
Flat?? Love the motor🔥🔥🔥its a loot faster then Mt07
Tuono 660 or S1000RR 2015 ???
Price is similar now.
The big one
Similar engine performance to the 890?
What u been smoking
A lot less eh
Scott Clark. Exactly what I thought, but maybe he was referring to the MT09 which he had just mentioned.
apparently he didn't notice the 890 has around 40% more torque than the 660 🤷♂️🤦♂️
I have to assume he means the KTM 890 performance-wise is similar to the MT-09 but "a little bit perkier". I love my 890 R, but I will say having a bit of fairing (like, say, the Street Triple or this Tuono) makes a difference. I added the 270mm Powerbronze screen to the KTM and that does help a lot.
Just get the trident or the sv650 and with the rest of the money go on a trip.
Hmm, no.
Ew
maybe not exactly those models, but the thought is nice.
Definitely not
I'd get the MV Agusta Brutale Rosso new for the same price, or Dragster/Brutale 800 slightly used. Totally different league compared to the Aprilia.
Overpriced but nice bike but so many better bikes for that money .
This or the Triumph Trident 660?
I guess the Trident is probably a more "beginner" bike, and has 20 bhp less.
When S1000R?
Plz do a KTM duke790 comparison!!
Not much point ... the 790 is obsolete and has been replaced by the base model 890 .... and thats coming from a 790 owner ;)
New Ducati Monster, missed off that list?
Guessing the 660 properly equipped 13k and 1100 20k?
even the base tuono is a great bike @ 16k
It should have had around 115 bhp to compete with its rivals.
Great bike but why aren’t Aprilia doing an A2 bike. They do an A2 bike on the RS so why not on the Tuono . My son set his heart on one for when he passed his A2 , he’s even saved the cash for it.
Are they planning a 660 factory?
That could be where the power will be that is missing from this one.
At aprilia, Factory means Ohlins suspension and never means more power.
@@lensoprezole5322
I know. I just had a thought that they might go a different direction due to all the reactions.
@@lensoprezole5322
They have never messed with the electronics or fuel curve for factory versions?
Interesting that you rated it up against the upper middleweight nakeds not the MT07, CB650R and Z650.
based on £10k approx. price-range not cc's
It's not really an equivalent to the 650's, which all make around 60-70hp and cost a lot less. To be fair, it kind of sits in it's own hybrid category without much direct comparison - probably best to compare a little from either category.
Beautiful bikes...
They really need to pull 890 duke with this engine
Well the solution is obvious.... add back one cylinder to make a V3. Or chuck an R6 suspension on an MT-07
why pick the Tuono over the RS 660, it don't make sense.
I would have a Street Triple RS all day over this. I do love the look of it though.
So sad it's not a baby v4
Kind of expensive here in the USA.
Z900?
Z900 is around 5th or 6th place in the ranking of agility of this category of bikes. KTM 890, Street triple 675, Tuono 660, GSR 750 are more nimble than the Z900. Z900 not the last of the category in 2021 but far from the best. It is a Japanese bike that means financial compromises in the components that equips the bike (frame, suspensions, brakes, abs unit, etc)
@@lensoprezole5322 MT09 2021 ?
The bike is a lemon! The Aprilia has many issues that are talked about in the Twins cup. Aprilia try's to keep it quiet even editing sponsored riders articles. Aprilia has an large group of mechanics at Moto America to keep the bikes running. The attached review is so common with many who own this bike...read the comments in the review! th-cam.com/video/AiWDnuKHW8I/w-d-xo.html
No brainer, the RS 660 has the cornering ABS and quickshfter.......the Tuono does not.
if the heart is not good, dont buy it, need a bike with a big heart that will always surprise you
Basically, if you're looking for a sub 10,000 GBP naked bike, get an MT-07. You won't miss the Tuono 660
You will every time the road turns and every time you look at the MT07.
Makes no sense to me this bike...we have the RSV4, a full on race bike for track use, and the tuono, the perfect sportbike for the road...the RS660 isn't a R bike, it's already the small sport bike for the road so this makes no sense!
I wouldn't really call the Tuono 660 a naked bike all it's missing is some fairings 😂
660cc is too small for a sporty naked bike. And the parallel twin is a budget choice rather than choosing the best engine for the application.
Over priced, I think they'll be discounting it as people won't pay that much when there are better bikes at that price point.
I thought they would’ve flew out my job fast but nope we have a apex black Rs660 and the silver/red tuono 660 still sitting on the floor... all the aftermarket parts for these bikes are waaaaaaaay too overpriced I’m not giving KTM or Aprilia any of my money because it’ll be a waste
This won’t be discontinued, it will be one of the best selling bikes in the years to come. Just watch.
@@AngelSapundzhiev My comment says 'discounting', As in reducing the price.
Buyer beware! My Aprilia Tuono 660 broke after 9000 miles. And now my engine has to be replaced under warranty.
That's what I afraid of
Repaired yet?
If they fix the flat spot from 5k-7k rpm... and if they didn’t have these exhaust valve clearance recalls lmao not a good look Aprilia
If you want 100 hp from a 660 it's gonna be a bit peaky.
new products can have a few issues, nothing new....
