From shy immigrant to longboard dancing world champion | Marina Correia

When Marina Correia arrived in France from Cape Verde, she struggled to make it her home. But after finding her calling in skateboarding, she became world champion in freestyle longboard dance - in just eight years. She impressed the jury with her unique and speedy style, becoming the first African woman to win the title.
We met her in Nice, where she is one of the stars of the beachfront.

Congrats, Marina! In the 70's, many of us rode skateboards. Cadillac wheels, trucks, and the deck. We didn't call the decks long or short. We'd ride downhill "tandem" or Hobie Cat style, pulled behind a ski rope attached to a car, etc. Broken bones and road rash were a part of skateboarding. The metal wheels were rough. Glad the urethane wheels came out. Both girls & boys rode together in our neighborhood. Thanks for the nostalgic trip!
