    2:24 Notice how the ankle “knee” is way lower than her other knee here. The doctors knew that her legs still some growing to do. At the time of the interview she still walks with a slight limp because the joins are not yet perfectly aligned, but they will be by the time she finishes growing! That’s amazing foresight.

      This is procedure called rotationplasty, it was originally performed by Dr. J. Borggreve in Germany in the 1930's on an adult patient with femur infection, but Canadian surgeon Van Nes performed it in 1950's (hence also called "Van Nes surgery"), for children with osteosarcoma below or above the knee joint. One of greatest idea in surgery ever.

    But, I am glad that the foot rotation worked so well. Her life is full steam ahead, and it isn't holding her back. She dances as gracefully as any of the other dancers!

  • @emrys6167

    I had the same cancer in the same place. I was a dancer as well. What they did with me is cut the bone out and put a new one in and put plates in to hold it. But it's no working. The bone broke and they tried doing bone marrow but it's not working. I'm cancer free but there's still the problem with my leg not working. They've considered amputation but it's in my femur so it would be hard to get a prosthetic. Definitely gonna ask if they could do this or not. Doesn't hurt to ask. And I would love for my leg to not hurt anymore and to be able to dance.

      @@BtwAlice I had something similar a couple of decades ago, my brain has never really adjusted. It's more of a very weak/uncoordinated hinge, very different from my healthy knee. Tendons that control fine movement are removed, as well as muscle mass. You can see this in her dancing when she has to put weight on her weak knee.

    This is truly amazing, such a beautiful girl as well, and the great minds that first think up these ideas in the first place, no doubt it was an amazing mind that first invented this type of surgery, what an amazing mind to think of using the bottom half of the leg like this as a knee joint. I do wonder tho if it still feels like moving ur foot or if it actually becomes to feel like ur moving just a normal knee joint?...either way it works! Great minds are put on this earth to think up great ideas just like this.... Stunning !

    • @AppleSpicerGames
      @AppleSpicerGames 8 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      good question! I believe her brain may be understanding the ankle as a knee joint instead of an ankle joint. It may be why it's reversed backwards and shortened. The brain understands to use the knee first before the ankle. So if you skip the knee and have an ankle, the brain probably understands that the ankle IS in knee. I'm no Dr though but I liked taking a stab at that question.

      +AppleSpicer I wonder if this procedure helps to reduce the incidence of "phantom limb pain" in patients who would have otherwise had their whole extremity below the cancer removed....does the nerves being reconnected to the salvageable limb below the cancer "trick" the mind to think the whole leg is there?

  • @RehnStillnightOfficial

    One of the best people I know got osteosarcoma (it's a kid's desease normally as doctors say, but she was already 40 something), got her upper leg bones amputated - along with part of the muscles - and replaced it with titanium ones. She now lives a completely normal life and you really couldn't tell she's been through something like that. It's amazing what science, medicine and doctors can do to save people's life!
    I think she's amazing, just like this girl here!
    I also lost a friend to bone cancer, she didn't find it in time. It warms my heart to see this girl dancing on stage ❤️

    So amazing to me that this is something that is able to be done. My boyfriend had cancer in his knee at 5 and had the same surgery. My little brain had a hard time grasping that not only it can be done but people can thrive and live their best lives after. I asked him once how hard it was for him to cope with the changes and relearn to walk and such. He said he really didn’t recall having a hard time with it and it’s just his norm. He now can out preform me in so many physical things I honestly don’t think of him as anything different it’s just Justin 🥰🥰🥰
