- Today we are heading to Downtown Camera to test a bunch of camera gear! I want to see what the Fuji GFX 100 II is like with the 110mm f2 for video. Does it have 3D pop?! And I test a bunch of Nikon Z lenses like the new 35mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.4. Also the 26mm f2.8, best vlogging lens? Is the Plena 135mm f1.8 a flat rendering?
Thank you downtowncamera.com for letting us test the gear!

You need some windows in your house dude... You need to let some light in, get some D3...
3:55 I know what you mean jelly bean... 💜💚
It takes a lot of effort to fuck up AF while having a censor the size of a football field gathering all the light there is from the sun….
Great job Fuj
Sensor size really doesn't have anything to do with it, especially now with PDAF. They have to add AF points directly on the sensor itself to make phase detect work... so the bigger the sensor, the more points they would have to add to make it comparable to a smaller sensor with less points.
We can fight about what is 3D pop, but we'll all agree the Plena is flatter than our beautiful flat earth.
This episode is hilarious! I will go to Downtown Camera if I ever make it to Toronto, just because of this video! It might happen, someday.
I hate everything about the work week except for the fact that I’ll have a bunch of your awesome videos to watch.
Hey Casey, please consider this an intervention. I believe the quest for the perfect camera setup and the search for the poppiest 3D pop is driving you insane. It has become an unhealthy obsession of nothing but Tonehs and both chromatic and non chromatic aberrations. For an addict such as yourself there will never be enough 3D pop, nor will there ever be a perfect Toneh to autofocus reliability ratio. Your wildlife footage is beautiful, perhaps consider making Planet Earth 4 instead.
Love from Argentina.
Baby.
6::20 "It's good, it's vintage...it's not good." Literally channeling Tony and Chelsea. I'm pretty sure it's spirit possession, and a sign of the impending Apocalypse.
A button for the people 6:20 😊
Tonehcalypse
Pulsing in the background, it's Fuji autofocus xD
There were some Charlie Chaplain moments in there. The expressions made when people entered the shot were so entertaining without words.
If only Fuji could sort out their damn auto focus!
For a second or two it was glorious😊
Glad he finally realized "micro full frame" is way too small for cinematic video. Need at least 15+ stops of dynamic range for TH-cam videos or you might as well use a phone. 💯
Shilltuber progress bar had me dead from the start 🤣🤣
3d pop in a camera shop! A poet and you didn’t even know it 😊
Good morning, hoser. Looking forward to this one. Take off!
The medium-format vlogging video was short but definitive. It was worth the try.
I'm really digging the Z6III brother. Keep up the great work! - Jon
50mm full frame anything is always magic
We look forward to your test of the GFX 100 II as an action camera -- maybe compare it to a Insta360 while water skiing. Now that would be a fair comparison!
The matchup we have all been waiting for
If you get the chance, try a TTartisan 28/1.4 on GFX. It's technically a Leica M mount lens but in 16:9 video works beautifully well on a GFX sensor.
Switching to Fuji GFX was like going from 720p to 4K. Incredible image quality.
You make the BEST most entertaining videos!!!😂
I never understood the whole 3D pop thing till you reviewed that Plena lens. That was pretty wild, you literally couldn't tell if you were infront or behind the boxes
The flashing shadows in the background; is that on my end or some kind compression artifact everyone is seeing? Looks like the worlds dimmest strobe light back there.
2:59 HOLY POP!
That Z 40mm F2 lens is the greatest value lens ever.
"Did you know that I'm in a show here?". You're so goofy dude 🤪. Great content.
Awesomeness! Bro you nailed it! I love the 26mm |2.8
Friends don't let friends buy Fuji Xs10s! I hope you stopped him! Great video!
Yeah, I’ve been waiting for you to see the light on medium “lesser than full frame” format. If not from the image quality, then strictly through the potential income from affiliate link$.
Cheers, Kasey!
welcome to fujifilm simulations!
I took a picture of a crime scene once. Got arrested for "Indecent Exposure".. [oh humm]
Xs 20 is my latest ❤❤❤ - even though I have canon r5 and 50mm1.2. There’s just soul about Fuji that calls out to me.
1:45 Nice!
The fuji got the shill bug for that Joby Rangepod LOL...
purple and green for life!🤣😂
I really have to smile all the time when you are "testing gear" .. Little suggestion: When you use the GFX-sensor for filming (like I do in the Cine GFX rig), external monitor (or the Kinefinity Eagle Eye Viewfinder !), follow focus and then the fun begins ... With the GF lenses like the Gf 110/2.0, 80/1.7 or 55/1.7 or, if you want to go "all in" with a GF-to-PL mount adapter and any PL-cine lens of your liking. Once you have that F-Log2 .RAW footage in your PostProduction suite , the smiles never leave your face, trust me !!
Are you sure that wasn't the 3D POP Police 🚔🤣
15:00 is your skin that smooth or your just happy to see us?
Fuji loves em desaturated greens
1:31 - you're literally a genius Casey!
I recently gave up on a full X series and fully committed to Fujeeess GFX System - 100ii (I'd owned an old 100s for 2 yrs)
Hugely challenging financially and not a little soul searching 🙄
but not before I had spent a lot of time with a friends Z8 plus Nikon lenses.
Yep, the autofocus is, err average.....
But the image and video results when you get it right are on a different planet.
worth the frustration??? well frustrating at times for sure, but hit the spot, its a sublime, completely different world.
Great video 👍
"Chose the right tool for the job" . I do architectural photography and film making for a living. LOVE the GFX 100 II ... :-)
That Fuji Image was on another level, I think you should get your hands on one for a video or two.
I bought that exact same battery charger with the two batteries for my Z8 and Z6iii. The charger works with the caveats you described but the batteries that came with it are the WORST 3rd party batteries I have ever had and a I have many. The lasted about 50to 75 shots on my Z8 and they don't even work with the Z6iii. You get a message and the camera just shuts down. If you need 100$ charger that sort of works then it's ok I guess but overall it's the worst value out there. Thanks for the video!
16:09 not buying a fuji anymore, even if someone give it to me for free
Fujifilm is like Leica, except that their cameras are made in sweatshops.
Classic Fuji AF
@@kingghidorah8106 that explains a lot of things 🤣
@@jcar4522 i know right, charging €2700 for a camera whose only major advantage over the €1200 competence is 1/8000th is just 🤯, and their excuse? SHORTAGES! which is ironic because Fujifilm has more stable market than Sony and Canon because of the so called "hybrid shooters"
Leicas are made in a sweatshop, just priced higher so you feel important
I got the 50mm f/1.4 a few days ago. It's pretty cool. Im not really complaining about anything too much. I like the look. It's like the F mount G version but shaper. It autofocuses way faster, too. I know a lot of people really didn't like that lens, but this is a pretty good z mount replacement for it.
Regardless of the manufacturer, the optics and raw files in the Fujifilm medium format will surpass anything found in the 35mm full frame format. Moreover, any misguided comparisons you encounter on TH-cam between medium and full frame formats are conducted using lower resolution compressed JPEG files, which is utterly absurd. Ultimately, medium format stands as a future-proof choice. To Summarize, I am not knocking full frame because it does have advantages in autofocus speed and weight.
As a complete well rounded multi use camera
Sony cameras rule them all
@@VirtousStoic I completely disagree since all of these manufacturers are now fairly even, with none being better than the other, and there was no need for anybody to switch systems.
Those Fuji’s colors,my god! If Fuji fixes their AF problems it’s game over.
That‘s the point: "If"
So you discovered film emulation, hooray
Both 1.4s are poppy to my eyes. Almost as good as the Canon 24.
8:00 wow I went and cooked and then ate my dinner by the time that foccused
Why does Fuji hate us?
There are zero camera stores anywhere around here. If you want anything it's Walmart or Best Buy. I've always gotten my gear off eBay and have never been disappointed. Medium format is cool, but hella expensive. The 35mm T1.4 has good Tonehs.
Hey Casey, try GFX with EF glass and some AF adapter, I'm using fringer EF-GFX with my GFX 100S it just so good, option to stay wide and with thinnest DOF makes it completely amazing:
- EF 50/1.2 turns into 40/0.95 equivalent with AF
- EF 35/1.4 turns into 28/1.1 equivalent with AF
- EF 40/2.8 turns into 32/2.2
Yes, there vignetting, it could be removed and some lenses covers GFX without noticeable vignetting. Never tried video but for portraits it's so good, yes it might miss and loose eyes, but cmon that dof can't be reproduced with AF on FF: there is just no such equivalent AF lenses.
Your aperture does not magically become brighter or shallower on a bigger sensor LOL.
Those lenses were made for a full frame camera thus 50mm is F1.2 and also TONEH 1.2 regardless how BIG a sensor you put it on, but when you put that lens on a smaller sensor lets say m43 you still have F1.2 but your TONEH now is 2.4 because of the field of view difference.
@@SMGJohn Thats only about depth of field and field of view equivalence. Sure lens brightness will not change.
@@arturcharaev1336
But your depth of field will not change putting FF lenses on a bigger sensor, thats the point, you put that FF lens on a m43 sensor the depth of field still wont change, only your field of view changes.
@@SMGJohn yes, you missing point of equivalence. Take a look on fstoppers "lens compression doesn't exist" video or petapixel equivalence article.
Lens physical characteristics stays the same no matter where would we mount it. But due to sensor size we can have wider or tighter picture if we mount it on GFX or m43.
So we got EF 50/1.2:
- if we mount it on FF we are on 50/1.2
- if we mount it on GFX we are still on 50/1.2 but since we've got bigger sensor we capture wider picture and to replicate this picture on FF we will need 40/0.95
- if we mount it on APS-C we are still on 50/1.2 but since we've got smaller sensor we capture central part of picture and to replicate it on FF we will need 75/1.8
- if we mount it on m43 we are still on 50/1.2 but since we've got smaller sensor we capture central part of picture and to replicate it on FF we will need 100/2.4
But things a bit more complicated due to various sensor aspect ratio. If we just grab 40/0.95 lens on FF picture will be too narrow due to sensor 3:2 aspect ratio, so to replicate it properly you also need to take in account further crop to 4:3 on FF.
That GFX had a great image! You can get the original GFX 100 used for less than $3,000, a new Mitakon Speedmaster 65mm f1.4 lens for $599, Add an atomos Ninja 5 for another $599 and you get 4.2.2. ProRes raw at 4K -- an equal to Jacques Tati's 70mm _Playtime._ By the way, somebody uploaded _Playtime_ to youtube and you can watch it for free for the time being. I think I'll keep my Micro 4/3rds stuff instead.
Man you have a lot of good options for camera stores near you, the closest one to me is 4½ hours away.
The Fuji 35mm 1.4 is what I’m looking for. Small size with character…. If I can find a good deal. I think using area vs multi is the best for Fuji video. Custom settings depend on the lens.
I shouldn’t have to ask this, but was the T-shirt yellow or orange? That’s some crazy difference in colour!
That GFX100II autofocus is in all latest fuji cameras. XT4 is doing actually better haha
Now I feel your pain :)
@@cameraconspiracies Remember seeing your video xh2s vs sony a7siii and it was working acceptable, i guess that was on the first firmwares. It went downhill from there haha
Since your videos are recorded 2 weeks ahead
I'm still waiting to see if the Nikon z6 iii will stay😮
Can't have nikon colors if your battery is flat 😮😮
The canon R5 ii comes with a charger 😊 just don't order more batteries because there aren't any
Side question- what's your 3d pop rating on the voigtlander 20mm f3.5?
Just adapt the Fuji lens to the Z
Yeah the 35mm will be better focal length for street/travel, but the 50mm looks fine. Just wish they made it pro so I can ditch the 50mm 1.2
Was your shirt really that yellow (Fuji) or more orange/tan (Nikon)?
Try your Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 on the GFX >> 67mm f/0.9 TONEH !! that's 4D POP !! XD it covers the whole MF sensor and the AF works just as good as native glass.
The world would end.
Loved the look of the Nikon 50 1.4! The Plena looked as if it had less contrast. I would have tried the Nikon 105 2.8 micro, supposed to be the sharpest macro lens made.
The 105 S is extremely sharp, it cutting your face when you use it for vlogging. But the AF motors on it are a bit slow. So not sure if it’s really that suitable for filming
Hi,
What is nice with 3D pop is that nobody can see it so you can endless talk about it !! 😂
I see Nikon is still latching on to an invisible hamster
rumors say Fuji is planning a full-frame camera early 2025. Well, definitely not an APS-C nor medium format - so full-frame, right? what else could they plan?
Didn't they come out and say that segment was already filled by other companies, hence why they wanted to focus on APS-C and medium format?
E mount is 46mm diameter, X mount 44mm, it can handle smtgh very close to FF. Could be APSH sensor, could be a dual APSC sensor 32x24 kinda like Arri ( 4/3 FF would be great ) could be a dual MFT sensor 27x18 ( 3/2 S35 )
m43 just to piss off Kasey LOL
"...you mentioned Zeiss and actually thought there was another option.." LOL! How is it that the engineers at Fuji can't solve the AF problem? The images that come from a GFX are just amazing. The new Hasselblad X2D 100C is quite incredible too. But, it's crazy expensive. I want one, I'll never own one. Have a great day!
I know it's kinda obvious, but GFX 3D pop is real, you can tell right away, it's not just the background blur, subject really feel like a 3d image, like you can see the weight of everything, idk how to explain it.
With GFX + 110mm F2 was expecting that it will send background to oblivion giving super gradient, but it gave the worst bokeh of all lenses you tested here, weird hard lines everywhere. I'm shocked.
I'm telling you the Fuji S5 Pro is the camera to check out slap as z-ice 35 on it
Casey, do you think that smaller apertures help with the 3-D Pop? A lot of older lenses were f/5.6, f/4, etc. I’ve shot my Nikkor Z glass at f/5.6 and it gave the pop
In before “Greater depth of field, duh”
The fuji definitely had the most pop, however don't really need to see the 3D depth of the tripod Gimbal head rendered while you are out of focus 😭
Fuji needs to get rid of the X mount, all the old AF motors inside some of their lenses and need to hire some Sony AF algorithm programmers. They got enough money from rich hipsters and doctors
I'm sure they are crying out there in Fuji headquarters after having record profits with their X mount sales wishing they could ever rival the mighty Sony cameras
@@drchtctsure, but the professionals are a constant money maker with every new "high class" camera like the XH/GFX line + they are buying expensive lenses.
The AF problem is working against this for months now and i think the management achknowledged this with the latest video

You should rename the video 135 plena is plenty awful. I'd love to see the reaction from the fan boyz
I always told you Casey that the Plena was as flat as pancakes. So sad
Clearly medium format is the only usable format, surely that crop sensor Nikon "small format" camera has terrible unusable low light performance, dynamic range, pathetic
Can you check the Viltrox 28 1.8? I feel like it has the most pop of the viltrox lenses.
Could you make a vid about Canon and Magiclantern ? Get a Canon M or 700D ?
I am curious about Samyang's 135 f 1.8, it may have 3d pop? Someone has to send one to Kasey
NiSi lenses exist. I'd love to see you review one.

3:55 i know what you mean jelly bean... 💜💚
Why did you keep changing t-shirts? Every lens showed a different coloured shirt, only the blurry, expensive fuji showed you in a yellow t-shirt. Oh your 24 won that.
3d pop? TTartisan 75mm F1.5 Swirly Bokeh
Did you say "autofocus works great"?
the 50mmm was really nice only one worth touching , that Fuji was very disappointing as it was horrible ! those old canon lenses are going to be hard to beat ! you need fringer to make a ef to fuji mount for you they might be able to fix that crap autofocus up.
The EF 24 was soft
And beautiful.
That test you did with the volley ball net - do you have any examples with a 3d pop lens as a comparison?
50 1.4 is cheaper than the 35? Man, the 85 1.4 will be so cheap, they'll throw it in when you buy a body. Besides the kit lens.
Fuji one day will be useable. I'll be dead by then.
I appreciate you desire to learn the lighting, but I think it's a bit too dramatic in my opinion, missing the catch lights from you eyes. The funny and educational TH-cam channel if you're interested in learning talking head light is: "Epic light media" . I also like the "Slanted lens" teaching quite well. You're welcome! Btw I recently bought a medium format and it's a lot of fun. Ali from One month two cameras had a video recently.
Charger company ate good 😂 yeah buddy let em know.
I only use the GFX for pictures, which are just insane. For video though, it's atrocious.
Got the Alienware ryzen 7845hx m18 4070 for 1335$ with the Chuwi mouse, never seen one, their laptops hella sucked. Lol! Some trustfull trader sad me 'this Chinese batterychargers charge you battery unevenly, but they cost 10$.And original chargers charge evenly, so battery lasts long. But they costs 70$'
As for my first Digital Camera A7III i went full-original (battery, charger, SD-card).
