Years ago I worked as an assistant for a top food commercial photographer. We used 8x10 view cameras and his favorite lense was a Schneider 240 mm. The lens had a scratch in the the middle of the front element. It made incredible sharp photos.
The damage to the front glass affects the flare and bokeh balls a bit (scratches are visible), but no big deal, the problem arises with the damage to the rear glass of the lens - it is no longer usable (except maybe for some effects). So please be happy with this purchase, the color rendering is excellent and the sharpness is as it should be for cinematic video.

You've discovered a new sub-genre: log related content! What was interesting was that the heavy damage to the front element didn't show at all in the footage. And f4 was acceptably sharp, I think.
Considering your positive feedback on the G9ii and you value 3D pop, a demonstration of the Leica 42.5mm 1.2 performance in G9ii is my new curiosity. The concept sounds quite promising.
I own the z30/12-28 PZ VR combo. It’s a lightweight little setup. It lacks the bells and whistles (Log, 10bit, 4k60) most other cameras in that cohort have. I believe Nikons target market for that camera was more social media content creators than filmmaker/cinematic TH-camrs. For the price, it’s not a bad setup for more people. The stabe on the lens works well and being able to go wide to normal focal lengths is great for vlogging/travel stuff. Found my setup used for around $800.
You might get 7.24% more flares with a front lens scratch, but you really need to be missing chunks for it to matter. Rear element scratches are usually worse.
I watched the EverydayDad when he was sub 20k subs (hipster statement I know). One thing that I think allows him to upload with the consistency he does is his video series formula. He has different series (unboxing and initial impressions, x product 2 months later, should you buy x in 2023, etc.) on his show. Developing a formula gives you more of an idea of what you’re actually going to create on a consistent basis. One of the hard things of being a TH-camr is sometimes just figuring out what video you wanna make. When you have a formula you stick to it makes it easy.
I enjoyed the Zeiss images with all f-stops, even watching at 4k full screen. True, at f 1.4 it was not as sharp as stoppend down but still so much better than the sirui (for my taste). This lens has really a "look".
"...we're gonna need a bigger boat..." LOL! You spent quite a long time under those power lines shooting this video. Shooting in log looked quite uncomfortable..... Thanks for all of the answers today. Have a great weekend!

Idea for a wildlife videography channel... Never actually capture any wildlife, on camera but every few seconds, the photographer exclaims "What the hell was that?!?" 16:00 - 16:45
Beautiful, Kasey, just beautiful with what you had to say about feeling it in the heart. BTW, the lens was crap - hang on, TH-cam was set to 720p - much better now, but still not great.
contrast goes down no matter what, in the shade too. You're basically looking right at the scratch, but so blurrily that it fills the entire frame, thus acting like a very thing layer of vaseline. Definitely still useable, but noticeably worse if you have two copies to compare side by side.
I used to watch The Everyday Dad too. I stopped when he switched to talking about Macs and whatnot. Joe Cristina used to talk about cameras; now he mostly talks about Starlink. He's probably bigger now too, though. Following the algorithms, I guess. P.S. - the creeper was in your shot at 14:30, right behind you. P.P.S. - I know that black girl at 18:35! Tamika is my daughter's best friend from middle school! She's been in Toronto about a decade now. Small world! Tell her hello from me. P.P.P.S. that lens works well. You can't see the scratch at all.
Well - as far as I can remember : this Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.4 has quite a nice rendering , being rather a bit soft at 1.4-2.0 and then catching up on sharpness pretty darn big from 2.8 ( which is already really really good) up to 4 and 5.6 ! There it was supposed to be among the sharpest Zeiss Lenses -- so really not that bad at all !
my Pancolar is the same way, the problem is, when stopped down, it has ninja stars bokeh at 2.8 :)) and at f4 its in line with GM lenses in sharpness but the bokeh ball are hexagons, otherwise its smooth and creamy.
Just about to start watching but saw you written intro. As a G9 user I can unequivocally say that the G9 is the deal of a lifetime. So feature packed and solid as a rock. Anyone here knows its shortfalls, mainly the CDAF. But, I use mine set up inside and with decent light I never have the AF problems others talk about. I do understand the limitations for R&G Video and Wildlife/Sports but it still holds up very well for basic video. So I do respectfully disagree with your take on the G9. They're so cheap now you can afford a couple of G9's for less than most new cameras. Always use case dependant of course.
A scratch on the front element is not nearly as important as a scratch on the back. Clean the scratch with distilled water on a damp q-tip. Scratch remover won't fix the scratch, but it will remove the white crud. It won't really work any better, but you will feel better about it. Because I am but a lame photographer, the 3-d pop of your new scratch and dent lens shook me to my very core. I clapped my hands over my quaking eyeballs (like see-no-evil) and prayed for bokeh to come and hide the scary third dimension from my fragile, timid soul. When I removed my hands, the video was over and I was safe.
Interimitent fasting felt like absolute garbage until about a month in. Now I don't eat until 11 AM and stop at 7 PM. Feels amazing. Green tea and sparkling water are your friend.
I have nice Pentax FA*24/2 with some scratch on back lens, it is only visible in bokeh circles.. damage on frontal element usually has very little effect on image. You can easily shoot even with broken front element on some lenses and it won't affect the result dramatically.
I have realized 100-400 on full frame is perfect for my squirrel videos. Sigma is decent on the Sony A7IV. I had the LUMIX G9 with Leica 100-400, but it wasn’t fun to manually focus at 180 fps. 800 mm reach isn’t as critical as I thought. I’ll take autofocus at 120 fps on the Sony. HD is ok but would like 4K. I miss Everyday Dad’s camera reviews.
I need your help brother. I currently have XT4, XT5 and Fuji 150-600 lens. I am not enjoying the results at soccer games. What would you choose for this( I can get close to pitch) I also do occasional wildlife. Having just watched a few of your older videos, would you recommend the Pana G9 coupled with Leica 200 t2. 8 ? Hey Casey! Thanks for the videos. I'm curious, why do you wear sandals are you not cold? I have the same and love them btw. Also love Lems boots that are super warm, flat and flexible. Anyways I helped so many people, you're welcome :)
I have a nice collection of Zeiss lenses.. I recommend getting the older Contax Zeiss lenses.. they're even nicer than the Zeiss Classics (what you have) ..., they originally come with C/Y mounts or QBM mounts.., but you can get adapters, or buy them with permanent adapters like I did.. my 85/1.4 and 35/1.4 HFT Zeiss lenses actually have triangular aperture blade (very rare) and they have the most amazing vintage look.. ( because many films from the late 70s / early 80s used the original Zeiss Super Speed cinema lenses and those also have the triangular blades / bokeh that I'm talking about.. the triangular bokeh it makes looks so cool.. Idk why bought such a damaged lens lol... it better have been like $50 cause those are some thick scratches there.. i still have one Zeiss Classic.. its a 35/1.4 ... OH, reminds me!!! you can also get the original Zeiss lenses.. Zeiss Jena.. they will be cheaper than the Contax versions and look even more retro.. only issues are less contrast and more prone to flares.. but they are significantly cheaper.. they are still sharp though and have even better close focusing distances.. however, most of them only open up to like.. 2.8.. thanks for the content as always..!
really looking forward to you getting teh dji pocket 3 to test i just foudn out that new mic is 32it float which makes it as good as teh new rode wireless pro , so i wanna pull the trigger i just need your final thoughts especially on editing with the files ?
If you had to go one month only using one camera and your choices were the Olympus E-1 or the Sony Venice 2 (8k version) which would you choose? You get to have every lens available for the one you choose and a $500,000 budget for accessories.
Thank you for continuing to bless us with the down to earth you need to hear this dose of reality content. A cleansing experience in this over saturated by the game-changer exhausting over the top fake bullshit energy market. 🙏
You made me hate my decision of getting my Lumix S5 nearly two years ago. I want the mk 2 but I feel like I would be bettet off switching to Sony... But I also want to get that Nikon Z30 or 50.
A scratch into the front element is basically invisible - but a scratch on the rear element would being visible on your film or digital images, mostly.
Interesting that you are trying Marcus’ morning fasting routine. I tried it for a couple of days and felt great. Then I got hungry one morning after having a few glasses of wine the night before…
That's a pretty nice lens, even with a terrible scratch you'll get fantastic results. I'm a bit conflicted myself, wanting a camera for video to make use of the fantastic vintage lenses I use for photography. I have a few nice lenses in the 50ish mm range 45, 50,55,58, they all have there own character, curious if there is an affordable ( code word for cheap ) Sony FF camera you know of that might make experimenting with these lenses possible.
I have often wondered if old lenses can be refurbished... if the main problem is front element scratches, could these be polished out and the lens recoated ? Does anyone do that ?
I prefer not to use damaged lenses but my limited experience with them is that the loss of sharpness and brighness is worst when wide open and then abates a bit when you stop them down. Magical optics is a very delicate and elusive thing to achieve so going the damaged lens route isn't the right way.
I've had a 44-2 since almost new, love that glass, not the most but it's always in the bag. I do still use the zenit body that came with, it works great as a kayak anchor or a bluefin weight- perfect mass. I eat once a day, somewhere in the middle-vegetarian only- pretty sure the fuels my madness. The new old lens looks great, that serious siriu though makes your head look way to large for your body...just sayin.
I had same, it is well known zeiss optical scheme for projectors, with unfortunately bad anti-flare anti-stray-light tricks. It is even noted in description as "special soft lens for portraits", for me bad excuse as marketing tricks to warn user for lack of contrast. I have no idea why we do not use Zeiss trickery like paint edge of elements with black lacquer and use more layers for AR coating. We have almost all Zeiss knowledge and even enhanced it, but that "smooth portrait lens" make me mad, it is outcast almost everyday here and that lens make it even more flat and dull.

@@AABB-px8lc I was not trying to troll or be sarcastic, just genuinely curious. I have used plenty of vintage lenses and hoods are often always necessary so that veiling flare does not wash out contrast.

What's up with all the bots? Anyways, scratched barley mean shit, I've done it as part of a test and the lens is fine, lost a bit of contrast after the 100th scratch
DPR did this many years ago - scratches could affect IQ, but by then, your lens would look like being used into a war zone for ages..a few small scratches don't interfere IQ.

really looking forward to you getting teh dji pocket 3 to test i just foudn out that new mic is 32it float which makes it as good as teh new rode wireless pro , so i wanna pull the trigger i just need your final thoughts especially on editing with the files ?
F/4 for the win. Set it, forget it.
Sox and sandals is the reason the world is going to hell in a handbasket!
If you had to go one month only using one camera and your choices were the Olympus E-1 or the Sony Venice 2 (8k version) which would you choose? You get to have every lens available for the one you choose and a $500,000 budget for accessories.
I have lens(vintage) with worse Front element scratches and there is little to no problems with video and stills
10:35 uncovered why I have yet to upload a video… Thanks for the therapy doctor! So simple yet so true...
Toneh Sasquatch sighted, at 1:23.
isn1t the damaged front element a bit like having glimmer glass on? imperfections are fine
beware the tornado spiders!
I'm very surprised that the gash was completely invisible in the shots, even stopped down.
A scratch into the front element is basically invisible - but a scratch on the rear element would being visible on your film or digital images, mostly.
“Macaroni lifestyle” for the win.
Interesting that you are trying Marcus’ morning fasting routine. I tried it for a couple of days and felt great. Then I got hungry one morning after having a few glasses of wine the night before…
That's ice looks really good I'm shocked with such a big gash that it still looks so damn good
i use a canon ef 35 is on my bmcc og and it has magical looking qualities.
TH-camr Zenographer has repolished a lens or two to deal with haze and shot coatings. He was pleased as it made his lens usable, but he was cautious.
I prefer not to use damaged lenses but my limited experience with them is that the loss of sharpness and brighness is worst when wide open and then abates a bit when you stop them down. Magical optics is a very delicate and elusive thing to achieve so going the damaged lens route isn't the right way.
What would happen if you used those windshield repair kits to fill in the scratches?
or just mcGyver it pop off the top element with a screwdriver and glue in a piece of acrylic from Home Depot.
I miss Everyday Dad when he was a camera review channel. He was really good at it. I don't like his phone and tablet stuff.
With billions of subscribers, I think Kasey has earned the right to blow his money where he wants. He’s helping the economy unlike me commenting.
Your lav mic has pretty decent sound. Do you have a brand preference for your lav mic?

@@AABB-px8lcHave you tried using a lens hood?
@@robert18productions /rant /sarcasm ofc no, as it was my first unbeliviable absurdly costly buy (200 roubles, Зенит12-сд+ Гелиос44-2 a bit average month salary at hat time), only because i finished school and it was gift from parents. I spend 3+ years walking near that shop just to have a chance to look it in shelf, just under that famous photo-gun with fancy rifle "cage". Are you kidding about hood? Trolling ? /rant
@@AABB-px8lc I was not trying to troll or be sarcastic, just genuinely curious. I have used plenty of vintage lenses and hoods are often always necessary so that veiling flare does not wash out contrast.
here is article for curious ppl what I meant Helios lack of lenspire.zeiss.com/photo/app/uploads/2022/02/technical-article-about-the-reduction-of-reflections-for-camera-lenses.pdf
Man, I forgot what we were talking about but F5.6 seems legit.
Should I switch to faster prime lenses now what with the end of daylight savings eh?
VP's life: "What the hell is that?"
You’ll only notice issues with the scratch if you’re trying to video subjects that are back-litten, at which point it‘ll be Flare City.
We have got a bit of toneh in the end, after all :-)
Whenever I watch this channel, I just can't help wondering since when "Booger" from Revenge of the Nerds picked up photography... and he's aged so well.
What's up with all the bots? Anyways, scratched barley mean shit, I've done it as part of a test and the lens is fine, lost a bit of contrast after the 100th scratch
You learned to spell Sirui :)))
It's better than the Planar, sharper with the same pop.
mic for tee shirt swap!!
bite! ha!
Go onnnnn (Im a genuine mic manufacturer in the UK)
You looked like a hobbit in a magical wood on this shot.
DPR did this many years ago - scratches could affect IQ, but by then, your lens would look like being used into a war zone for ages..a few small scratches don't interfere IQ.
I loved the advice about passion and getting your body right so you can spread your love and knowledge with others. Just have one question tho. Is it a Canadian thing to wear socks with sandals ? Linus tech tips Sebastian was the 1st guy I've seen fully embrace this lifestyle. You, him and I are all about the same age and I'm not far from the Canadian border located in Milwaukee WI. but I know of no one else dedicated to getting stabbed in the foot by plants and trees while out in nature so what's the deal. Are you guys in the same gang, Is it a comfort without compromise thing, a war on fashion, maybe a lifestyle choice or a fetish ? I'm kidding obviously but not about the dangers of having sock only exposed feet
