This film is underrated. Take perfect writing. Perfect insecurity. And add Christina 'F'ing' Ricci. You can't improve on that. I don't know what else Vincent Gallo made. But without Christina it can't be as good.

I always hated how production companies always yank the head rest from cars when they film movies. WHY! Just figure a way to light the damn people with the head rest. God forbid it's a millionth degree darker, or shadows... Oh, no, a realistic element... Well, we can't have that in cinema! I'm not blaming the great Vincent Gallo. This movie is amazing. Dark, hilarious, etc... And this trend has been used in cinema since head rests began appearing on cars. Hollywood movies have always pulled them off so it's easier to film car interior scenes. But it's totally not necessary. Would it have made any impact on this scene? Of course not. And the 5,000 other movies before and since this, that all do this automatic thing, of pulling off a car's head rests.... It never matters. But they always do it. STOP! It takes us out of a film's sense of realism when we see these hack tricks cinematographers use to make scenes look better. That said: Gallo rules! He's the best interview subject. When promoting this movie on Howard Stern (I think it was Howard) he said Ricci was a complete moron, and Angelica Huston was a selfish pig. Hahahaha. The balls that takes is so refreshing instead of the same old fawning over each other that every other actor does. I wish this guy comes back from obscurity. I imagine he's had enough of phony Hollywood and their crap, but I wish he came back.
Sad to say but I know of so many beautiful young girls like this that are madly in love with toxic, violent manipulative boyfriends like this guy. Why they keep running back to them blows my mind.

I’ve never understood why this movie works so well. It makes zero logical sense. But…. It works. Of course she loves him. And of course she “fixes” him. How could she not? We know nothing about her and she says little. But she’s just so… perfect. Beautiful film.

It's because Gallo is a notoriously controversial person. He came up in the 1980s NYC art scene- one of the few who survived that scene, literally. And he's held onto his idgaf oddball opinions and refused to conform to PC culture shifts. He tells critics off. He can't be bought into silence or watering down his art. He's also mentally ill and a method actor/director, so he's been known to be difficult to get along with- he was very hard on the cast, but also on himself for this film...typical of many artistic genius visionaries. But mainly, he was shut out of hollywood because he's not PC. (Also, his film Brown Bunny features him getting actual oral sex from the actress, and apparently Hollywood is only ok with directors doing that privately. 🤷🏻♀️)
The cinematographer for for this film should have won an Oscar. Christina Ricci looks like a work of art.
