    Sorry about the wacky light right at the beginning. Didn't notice that in the editing booth! :-)

    Hi Cole, great videos mate, I know I am very late to the party, but, I found when fitting the timing cover, before tightening the bolts, fit the harmonic balancer (crank pully) so the oil seal centralises on the pulley, it saves it being closer to one side than the other, it slows down the wearing of the timing cover oil seal. (Handy hint from Australia)

      Thanks Dave! That's one of the big worries, I will miss something and will get a bunch of flack about it.

    The best way I have found of installing the pistons is to put the piston in the cylinder then lift the piston up and hold it with one finger where the gudgeon pin is then put the piston ring compressor over so that is covers the rings then tighten the tool onto the piston making sure not to rotate the piston then lower the piston so the tool is on the block then check the piston hasn't rotated and then with the wooden handle of the hammer carefully and slowly knock the piston down while holding the tool against the block and for me all 4 pistons went in first time with no issues

    Great video! A complete engine overhaul and rebuild is not something that I will consider doing soon, but you make it seem very clearly to me! Are you going to overhaul a Mini SU carburetor in the future? Have bought my mini with the carburetor off the car and a DIY video about carburetor overhauling and cleaning will be very useful for many classic mini owners!

      Thanks for the kind words! Yes when I do my Operation Bad Wolf series I will be reworking my whole car and that will include my dual carbs. :-)

    If you tap around the edge of the piston ring compressor before you push the piston in you won’t have any problems with putting the pistons into the block

    Love your content so informative and make it so clear. I own a 998 and may think about doing this in the near future. Would a carb rebuild/overhaul video be something you could do? Or perhaps a 1275 on how it differs to this rebuild? Keep it up!

      Thank you for the kind words! I will be doing a carb rebuild, tuning, and install video relatively soon on my car.(within a month or so) so stay tuned for that. :-)

    Whilst you can at this stage, don't forget to prime your oil pump otherwise you'll struggle to get oil pressure during the initial cranking.

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tip, you can either prime in now while putting the oil pump in, or you can prime it from the front top oil return hole where your filter runs to. Either works and really I think the main consideration is just how many more times you have to physically flip the motor upside down again! :-D

    Thanks very mush for the super helpful guidance.
    One question, Does painting a gasket sealing surface impact the ability for the gasket to seal, and does it affect the life of the seal in any detrimental way?

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have read since posting this video that having painted surfaces can cause leaks however I have never experienced myself. I generally avoid painting the gasket surfaces now.

    is it not better to fit the oil pump but not tighten the bolts so the camshft locates correctly and self centres the oil pump

    Hi! #ClassicMiniDIY Are all the timing gears, tensioners and gaskets the same for 998cc engine but with an automatic gearbox?

    Hey Cole, I'm not sure of the chances of you seeing this but have been following your videos for a while and am currently rebuilding my 998. When I try and put the piston back in the bore its extremely tight. Its not the rings getting caught as they are now below the lip, but it seems like I'd need to use a fair bit of force to get the piston all the way down. I have double checked that the crank is out of the way, it was well lubricated, etc. Any ideas? Thanks in advance as your videos have been instrumental in all that I am doing

    Many years later haha all the way from New Zealand - Why did you not set the camshaft timing?

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! It all depends on the cam you're installing. This setup ran a stock camshaft and the difference of a degree or two wouldn't make much difference in overall performance. If you are hyper detail oriented it may net you a marginal gain in performance. However it would really be marginal. "dot to dot" alignment is perfectly fine for an all stock configuration. If you are upgrading the cam and really focusing on performance, it's always recommended to degree the cam though.

  • @chickenlegman5460
    @chickenlegman5460 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this is old but you should always apply break in lube on the lobes of the camshaft

  • @Paul_VanGo
    @Paul_VanGo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you just install the pistons dry into the bore?!?

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I forgot to mention it but the bore itself was lubricated. I try hard to remember to say everything but sometimes my wee human brain can't recall everything. :-)

    hi , first of all i love the videos you have made and they have been very helpful with my rebuild. could i ask if you know that when i lined up the dots on my timing chain, does the crank or pistons need to be in a certain position such as tdc on combustion or is it ok as it is just lined up as you did in the video? i am worried that the engine will not be properly timed and cause some damage . thanks in advance .

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When lining the dots up on the gears your crank and cam will have to be in a specific position. They wont line up without those two parts being aligned properly. You will see the woodruf keys on the crank and cam need to line up with the gears and it will only go together one way.

  • @shredelites
    @shredelites 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. Why do you punch up the timing cam gear washer?

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its intended to be a locking washer on the cam nut. It's an important step in ensuring the nut does not come loose under load.

    Are the bolts that go into the main cap for the timing plate really small? like less than 1cm long. 3/18?

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are quite small I don’t know the exact length though off the top of my head though. Why do you ask?

    • @TheChronicleMustang
      @TheChronicleMustang 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@classicminidiy I've got quite a few bolts and am not sure which ones were for the Main Caps. Got lots of the very short ones which I remember were also for the timing cover itself for the outside.
