The toast is always toasted for beans on toast, else it would be beans on bread lol. We usually have cheese melted in it, or pepper, brown sauce etc.
Everyone's got their own recipe for beans, I like to make mine with some cheddar and mozzarella cheese, a bit of salt and pepper, tiny sprinkling of cayenne pepper for a slight kick. You also need to let the sauce reduce down too, I like my beans to be thick and goopy
Don't know anyone who puts Branston on cheese on toast.😂
What is this foolishness? No one puts Branston pickle on cheese on toast, you have it in a cheese/ham/cheese & ham sandwich
These are snacks… Sausages, fried onions, peas, creamy mash, and lashings of gravy… that’s real comfort food..
We have those in america.
Myself & a few friends spent a few days in New York over the New Year following the Twin Towers attack - having seen several New Yorkers in the media saying that if you wanted to help out the best thing you could do would be to come & spend some money. My mate Bubble, now sadly departed & much missed, was moved to comment that the food was ok, nothing to write home about, the portions were ridiculous, thank God there were Indian & Chinese restaurants to frequent, why does every other thing I put in my mouth taste of Cinnamon & what in the f*cking world have the Americans done to bread?
Love your stuff. Keep up the good work.
Branston is the brand name, the pickle isn't an American pickle (which Brits would call gherkin) but refers to the process of being pickled (much like pickled eggs or onions), hence the vinegary taste. The chunks in Branston pickle are most likely to be rutabaga or carrot, according to the ingredients list. Marmite tastes really salty, but if you're a vegan then it's almost a necessity because it's the easiest way to get B12 into your diet, and if you can cut through / blend out / ignore the saltiness you'll notice the umami aftertaste, similar to a well caramelized piece of meat or fish.
There’s the blue cap Marmite which is 25% less salt
What is an american pickle? Im american and we have dozens of types of pickles. Not sure which one is considered the american one.
Branston pickle probably has more in common with a chutney than anything else
These are not comfort foods, more like back from the pub late snacks. If you want comfort foods try looking for things like cottage pie, toad in the hole, a good roast, cooked breakfast (any time of day is fine tbh!) sticky toffee pudding and many others.
I have lived in the UK for 50 years and would never put Branston Pickle with Cheese on Toast.
There were also way to many beans on the beans on toast.
Marmite is a love or hate product and I am in the love camp, but would never ever put that much on toast. It really is better with just a tiny amount. A jar can last a family a year. 😂
I will put worcestershire sauce on cheese on toast.
The proper way to have British Cheese on Toast.
Also to put it on before toasting 👍
Josh and Olly! My favourite is Josh! The one with the black tshirt. He grew up in Korea. Branston Pickle (the brand) is diced vegetables that have been pickled in vinegar and spices. It’s delicious in sandwiches with cold deli meats. 😋🇦🇺
Branston is a mixed veg chutney, carrots onions, sweede, cauliflower in a vinegary tomatoe sauce. It's normally eaten in a cheese sandwich, as in cold non-melted cheese and non-toasted bread, having it on a warm toasty seems wierd to me.
I agree. I've not heard of that before.
Marmite and Vegemite used to be a popular household condiment especially in South East Asia and lower income households. Growing up poor, we often eat rice porridge or congee. Adding a tea spoon of marmite or vegemite adds to the taste of tasteless rice porridge alot! And very comforting and warm, especially on cold days. It just taste and smell like fish stock or chicken stock.
But of course we never put it on toast 😂
As a Brit who loves his toast, I agree that 'toast' was 'anemic looking' - I like mine a lot browner... (well done). These were cooked in America, I'm guessing by an American (not done by the presenters), so blame the chef/cook!
EDIT: I should watch the whole thing through before commenting - BUT, FYI: 'A1 Sauce' is NOT the same as 'HP Sauce' (or 'brown sauce').
there is absolutely no way a school has a chef on staff to cook for a british youtube channel. The cafeteria ladies do not make toast.
@@nullakjg767
You have taken my use of 'chef/cook' FAR TOO LITERALLY. I was referring to 'whoever' happened to do the cooking or prepping of the food... Because I doubt it was either of the two Brits doing the commenting!?
This isn't really comfort food, it is just convenient food.
it's called bean on toast, become that "bread" is not bread but toast bread, so shortened it's toast
Salad in Britain usually contains lettuce, tomatoes, celery, radishes, spring onions and anything else you want. Branston is sweet I prefer Mustard Pickle. Our pickles usually have pieces of cauliflower and small white onions.
Marmite mixed in mashed potatoes and on cheese on toast ... the best :)
Ooh! I've never tried on mash! But I now will! Thanks
Marmite is made from the yeast that was used in brewing beer,it's a triumph of marketing .I tasted it once couldn't understand why anyone would eat it 😮😮😮😮❤.
lol we do NOT put Branstons pickle on cheese on toast. Whaaaat???? Youput that in a sandwich or have it on the side with cheese. It’s a relish!
I’m in my 60’s & I’ve never put or know anyone that’s put Branston pickle on their cheese on toast, that’d be weird
The British guy showed how he preferred to eat rather than what the majority way of eating those things would be. He’s not a great representative and clearly out to disgust the testers. 🙄🤷♀️Marmite is 💩 btw. 😂
You are right, the toast was nowhere near toasted enough. If you ever try it, put some butter on the toast, then the beans, are then some grated cheese and melt under the grill for 2 to 3 mins.
Beans on Toast is delicious
First time ive ever heard of anyone putting branston pickle on cheese on toast. Comfort food generally means something you can make in 2 minutes with zero hassle i think.
I do occasionally it's actually quite good, not really a comfort food though.
In america comfort food usually means heavy food that takes a long time to cook. Like buttermilk fried chicken, a big roast dinner, gumbo, etc.
I….
Always add a little butter to the beans to emulsify.
Always add pepper or Caribbean hot source to beans.
Always add grated (or chunks crumbled) cheddar cheese.
Always toast the fricken bread. (Brown Bread kicks ass out of white bread)
Always have a cup of tea before, during or after. Or if ya proper, have one before, one during & one after with your spliff 💥☄️🔥
In america they make beans fresh instead of eating them out of a can like someone in a fallout shelter.
In the UK army I had beans on marmite toast every morning for 5 years.
Beans on toast is great! But it's AWESOME with Worcestershire sauce. Worcestershire sauce? That's another story.
Didnt like Marmite at first but after a coulpe trys I love it now
Thinking about british prononciation "marmite" could also be "Arielle in a bottle" .. because its totally imaginable to me that its how they pronounce "mermaid" 😄
Beans on toast is a snack we grow up with and are used to in the UK, but I only like Branston baked beans The US grows up with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to most people in the UK that is yuck. Marmite is just gross.
Yes, Branston beans are better than Heinz.
as a german who has lived and "enjoyed" english food, i have to say it isn't too bad, it's just different (sometimes in a weird way).
if you _really_ want to get into weird food, try a video about german "Mett".
The guys from Jolly did a great video about it. It's about _raw_ _pork_ . A delicacy in Germany.
I wouldnt have pickle on cheese on toast. Pickling is a way of preserving things... forget what you call a pickle and remember that it just means it is pickled. Pickle itself is a variety of vegetables in a brown tangy sauce. It is good as a compliment to a cold salad or cheese.
12:39 - I was just thinking exactly the same, Lynda! Comfort food is supposed to make you feel comfortable, not uncomfortable!
Your food doesn't even come from America it comes from South America Spanish influence so get off your f......g soap box
We don't really beans on toast for breakfast. And that was the worst beans on toast I've ever seen, they seem to have forgot the toasting part.
Anyone who can't use a knife and fork at the same time probably shouldn't try and be a food critic !
Our version of salad is salad but with WAY less dressing on than in the US
That "toast" was barely toasted, but some people actually like it that way. I can't believe Americans don't eat baked beans on toast. In New Zealand everyone has grown up eating this.
I think that Branston stuff (we don't have that brand here either) is similar to a chutney.
I don't know what British marmite is like but New Zealand marmite is AWESOME and is very much like Australia's vegemite. Some people hate both, some one or the other, some like both. I can eat both but I prefer marmite.
Its considered absurd to eat carbs on carbs. Like making a mashed potato sandwich. Or wrapping bread in a tortilla. Having pasta on a bagel. It makes no sense to put carbs on top of carbs.
@@nullakjg767 So you've never had a chip (or french fry) sandwich? YUM!
for these guys I think the term 'comfort' is limited to something easy they can whip up quick for a bunch of kids. You should perhaps watch the people vs food channel - they did an american react to brithish food which has some better and more comforting food.
Brown sauce is very different to A1, a different kind of tang to it. I'll second the Worcestershire on the cheese on toast. Nothing fixes Marmite.
Mixing Marmite with jam works well, as the sweetness cuts through the saltiness. Peanut butter and Marmite spread works really well as the peanuts block the saltiness and leaves just the umami aftertaste of Marmite. Marmite also works really well in gravy.
Pickle on toast is weird, more a cold sandwich filling with cheese or meat. Beans on toast is a cheap, healthy and easy lunch and marmite is breakfast. 1 slice with marmite and 1 with jam as pudding. Not sure any of these are comfort foods more cheap and easy
I've never put Branston on cheese on toast !?!
You can get smooth branston
Are they using American foods ( American Baked Beans ) , as they are different to uk ones , they have more sugar in them.
British baked beans have far more sugar then the beans I cook. Latino style beans (the most popular type in america) have literally 0 grams of sugar in it. The heinz baked beans sold in britain have like 5 grams of sugar per serving. Baked beans are sugar beans.
Marmite is good as an ingredient in sauces. Do you not get twiglets in the states.
OK, beans on toast are not as bad as it sounds, but for sure, this is not haute cuisine.
I might not tell a big secret if I say, that British food, in the eyes of all other Europeans, is probably perceived as the worst food you can get in Europe, hands down.
But, to the rescue: You can begin a day in the UK with toast, butter and marmalade. And that's quite good. You also won't die from Weetabix with a bit of sugar in the morning. Sandwiches are also a British invention. And you can for sure eat British steaks for dinner, and I really like roast beef. Fish and chips are OK for me, depending on what quality level you have (and there is a huge range of qualities available...) Eating a piece of pie is totally fine at a soccer game, if you have a beer with it.
But, to be honest, when I was in the UK, the best food I ate was cooked in Indian restaurants.
Many of the traditional British dishes would be considered unreasonable, not even food, or the result of a failed experiment in the kitchen outside of the UK.
Yeah a british person giving an opinion on food is a joke in itself lol.
Do ya know if they heated the baked beans up?
Branson Beans are leading the way.
Watching this made me hungry, I'm not watching while eating marmite on toast with an Earl grey tea. Yum.
However beans and branston pickle are the devils food.
Beans on toast is mainly eaten by students who have run out of money or people who can't cook. Scrambled egg on toast takes a bit more time but is much better.
These people would slag caviar..............it's the american way...........yet a slimy "dawg", does it................
The chunks are fruits and vegetables.
Never understood the need for toast and/or white bread. Its not food, just a stomach filler that last 30 minutes. It's neither nutritious nor healthy.
No idea last time I had white bread. Grocery stores in Norway have 90% whole grain bread, and they are baked the night before.
If you live close enough to the bakery the stores get delivery from, you get warm fresh bread in the morning.
Unfortunately there is no local bakery here anymore so the breads are transported for close to 2 hours before they get to the local stores.
As a Brit I will say, Marmite is gross, beans on toast is gross... But Branston pickle is actually really nice, but at the end of the day everyone has different tastes.
Marmite is more of a discomfort food, and there's a ton more they could have chose instead of just what they did.
That is toasted. The butter makes it look paler.
Cheese on beans on cheese on toast is better...
at that point lose the toast and just have a bean and cheese taco on a tortilla.
Nice... Will give it a go.
@@marco.delbusso yes that is basically the american version of beans on toast. Latino style beans like refried or charro are far more popular than baked beans in america. 20% of americas are latino.
I certainly wouldnt call it comfort food! I hate all of it lol
Feeding kids Branston Pickle or Marmite is cruel, but they deserve it for not liking beans on toast
I hate beans and toast lol! that isn't toast by the way nothing more than bread
I dont know anyone that likes eating glue
I have never seen so much B.S.
just some loud people.
This American kids are brave. I, as a German, would only eat something English at gunpoint.😂
Pot/Kettle comes to mind
@@peterjackson4763 Nah, britain is hands down the least respected food world wide. German food is a bit bland, but everyone I know would prefer it to british.
