Is Langrisser II as good as other tactical RPGs, like Tactics Ogre, Bahamut Lagoon, or the Fire Emblem games? If you haven’t played it yet, does it look like a game you would try?

Honestly i'd say they are comparatively better. One thinh that blew my minds years later is that the first Langrisser had things like escape or defense maps that Kaga only figured out fo Thracia.
The early langrisser games are up there with SF2 as the early SRPG that feel professionally well crafted, and i say this as a Thracia fanboy. Kaga has it's charm but you have to keep up with a lot of his weirdness even in his best days.
It's far better than all of those, everything from artwork to fantastic music to surprisingly good branching story along with interesting hero class system gives it huge replay value, battles themselves are the best part with varied maps and huge armies, i can't count how many times I have replayed it since I was a child on an emulator.
since i'm into tactical games and i did played all the game mentioned
i would say that Der Langrisser have it's own charm compared to those mentioned.
Tactics Ogre have great sprites especially with it's tarot,
Bahamut Lagoon is fun when you mix and customized your own dragon and allies dragon
and my favorite fire emblem series is just cute and brutal at same time
but Der Langrisser are much more interesting and lores with the branching stories
plus like what you said, the intro questionnaires can let you unlocked the most OP edwin earlier aka the Royal Knight Edwin
some even allowed you to get Devil Axe and even sets you up in Sword Saint path earlier
in a way, Der Langrisser have much more replayability with it's branching stories plus multiple ways to customized your units from Edwin to Lana
I loved Warsong as a kid, I rented it so many times that my mother eventually went and found it to buy it. a little over a decade ago I found the patches to play Langrisser II / Der Langrisser and really enjoyed them. Also enjoyed the other Langrisser , cant remember if it was 3 or 4, whichever one has the english patch.
That was langrisser 4 if you haven't remembered since then
My impressions from playing the English patch were: 1.) Battles feel like they take an eternity to finish 2.) Music is excellent
I adore Langrisser II and I think the Langrisser series stands with the best of retro tactical RPG games and series. The Saturn versions of Langrisser III & IV are also available to play in English in some way, III has a fully translated script you can read from and there is an English patch available for IV. Unfortunately, Langrisser V is completely unavailable in English at this time as far as I know. I would suggest playing every game in the series if they are available in a form you can fully play and the more recent Langrisser I & II release is a great introduction to the series. Though I would also highly suggest playing the originals as well after that because there is plenty to enjoy in them as well, especially how awesome the soundtracks sound on the Genesis / Mega Drive soundchip.
the english patch for 4, wasnt that just a few things ? granted I havent checked in 5 years , has anyone worked more on it?
Played it on SNES or Sega don't remeber. It was awesome, now remastered, it is a mustplay ))
It's pretty wild how different all the variants of Langrisser 1 and 2 are.
Warsong, Langrisser PCE, Langrisser 32-Bit, and Langrisser 1&2 all play very differently, as do Langrisser 2, Der Langrisser, and Langrisser 1&2.
And the retellings in Mobile are also their own thing.
Very true, these definitely changed these games up a lot!
Damn, Godot is real
on side note, I actually prefer Der Langrisser over the stupid remake
it is much harder with less annoying over customization plus removing those amazing 16bits pixel art that perfected over the ages are overkill imo
not to mentioned how slow the game was in the silly remake
the only thing i even played Langrisser1&2 is just for the first game, warsong
as i never get to invovled with sega genesis
mobile langrisser is fun on its own way, after all it is handled by a different company
and you can see the remastered version of the art is much better than the remake
it is fun to see all Langrisser series in one premise like how FEH works for fire emblems fan
although i wont deny Mobage is killing the world
The remake/master does not include all the same gameplay elements. Gone are the instant heal by commanders where they are able to treat for 3pts of their 10pt hp. If the remake/master had that though it would have made it laughably easy so it's a good removal IMO. Just pointing out is all.
Love this game. Played the Snes version even before it had a fan-translation. Overall, the remake was pretty good, but I feel like the difficulty took a pretty big hit (as usual with remakes of older games, it seems). Haven't played the 2 yet, but halfway through 1 I just started bringing 1-2 units for each squad because any more was just useless clutter lol.
Very good decision to allow us to use the old artstyle, because the new one definitely missed the mark. Sadly, using the old art makes you miss the new CGs they did for the new art, and in place you just get normal dialogue boxes, so that sucks.
Glad you like it, thanks for your input on the difficulty - I didn't compare them both long enough to grasp the differences on that.
Oh, Warsong/Langrisser! Haven't played those in a long time, always liked em. The original artwork is from Satoshi Urushihara, an anime/manga artist known for legend of lemnear or plastic little and his detailed..."distractions" to use your words... The new artwork doesn't really do it for me, but nonetheless, nice to see the series here.
You didn't mention it, so maybe you don't know: Langrisser II's original version didn't have the different paths (or maybe it had a few endings, but they were all in the "light" path?). That was all added in der langrisser, and way later implemented in the remake.
Der Langrisser's ost is one of my favorites of all time. WAY better than the original Langrisser 2 tracks IMO, except maybe for a couple tracks which are great in both.
I once tried to look at the game's music files and, usually games will generally have one, ocasionally two instruments playing on a single channel, for organizational purposes. This game has every single instrument spread out across ALL channels. It's pretty insane.
Also, I somehow beat the original japanese version of the game as a kid, I was maybe 8? I had no clue what was going on, did not use anyone but Erwin, and abused the hell out of the emulator's savestates, but had no fast-forward button. Zero clue how I managed beat it, specially since the light route is the hardest one in my experience.
I'll play the remake eventually, already bought it a while Ago. Though it'll probably make me miss the original's music and goofier battle animations, with the little soldiers physically wrestling eachother..
Thanks for this info!
As usual, thanks for growing my backlog xD
That's my job!
Really do need to play the remake, been on mt. backlog since recently. But I love the pixel animations of the original.
I heard the remake is really bad because they gutted a lot of the original mechanics and made it way too easy.
I wanted to play it but it's like $60.00 for the collection on Steam - bit too steep for me
True, that is really expensive!
I discovered this series with Langrisser M and I was astonished how good it was (although a bit hard when reaching some point in the game and too much grinding needed all day). I was looking forward to test this remaster but I still much prefered Langrisser M as I was not a fan of moving every small soldier units the heroes take with them and the UI.
So I cannot speak for this remaster but Langrisser M being a mobile game is a gem and a much better game than most of the paid game I played (or not...looking at you 70 dollars/euros games). The heroes, how you can develop them and choose their specialization, their voice actors, the art of the characters and their attacks, the faction bonuses; all the games included in this one, the side stories, character personnal stories; all the different game modes available solo or with friends / guildmates - and I'm sure I am forgetting some more.
I agree with you. Langrisser mobile is awesome and I had been playing it for more than 4 years. The gameplay of old langrisser is too tedious for today's standard.
My main gripe with the Langrisser remake is it is one instance where I just really don't like the visual style of the new graphics.
The new portraits are great, but the new art just looks like a mobile game, or the graphics on a pachinko machine honestly...
Haven't touched this one. I did buy that remaster of Langrisser 1 and 2 and got absolutely wrecked by the first one. Read a number of reviews claiming it was too easy and a big step down from the original, but I don't see how. I never managed to beat the second map. Dropped it and never looked at the second.
Price point has been my main roadblock to trying this but if it's really a faithful recreation modernized, I can't blame the company for charging for it
I don't blame you - the price is stiff on Steam. Very unfortunate.
Comparing Langrisser to shining force and fire emblem is an interesting question, as it kind of lives in a space between Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, and Shining Force in that you hero units with permanent death and phase based turns (Fire Emblem), masses of unnamed disposable units and unit type advantages (Advance Wars), and your hero units gain spells and skills (Shining Force). That being said the sheer number of units can make the turns get pretty lengthy, and I tend to prefer initiative based rather than phase based. I put it above Advanced Wars, about even with Fire Emblem, but below Shining Force.
Currently playing Langrisser 2 on my second playthrough after having beaten #1 prior to this. Having just played FE Engage as my first FE game (except the mobile thingie) I gotta say I'm enjoying this way way way way more.
The only gripe with Langrisser 2 I have is the slightly low difficulty, but even that gets remedied with the following playthroughs and the challenge mode that increases the difficulty the more times you play through it. And due to the branching story paths and different endings there's no better reason than that to do several playthroughs.
I'll give it 11/10.
I bought this for ps4 on a whim and i was very glad i did. I played through the first game until i had gone through every possible route and gotten every ending. Started the 2nd one, but took a break. Still have to go back to beat it, but i highly recommend anyone into tactical rpgs to play this. Fun battles, cool character designs, good music.
I played a bit of the SNES one, it was cool but really tough, I didnt' know it had a remaster! Battles reminded me of the Advance Wars games, which in turn inspired the more recent indie title Wargroove. I might give the remaster a try after I finish Symphony of War, thanks for the tip!
Give it a go! The SNES had a slightly different art style/feel for sure!
the first game in the series was the only game that was released outside of Japan
until the Remastered version of the first 2 games
so Final Fantasy Tactics wasn't the first SRPG released outside of Japan
it's quite ironic that fire emblem the series that started this whole sub genre wasn't released outside of Japan until the seventh game
Dude, i remember Warsong handing me my absolute ass lololol
Yeah, it was hard! I need to cover that one soon too.
warsong is an amazing game from my childhood i remember beating level one a few times with the dad still alive and me not running
I still dream when Langrisser 3, 4 and 5 will be available out Japan and Sega Saturn.
Spring 2025.
I just bought a Saturn with these three…I’ll sure feel stupid if they come west, but probably nowhere near as stupid as I do trying to work through knowing 0 Japanese
I owned a copy of Warsong aka Langrisser 1 for Sega Genesis.
it was good but hard.. hardcoded stats and what not..
I traded 3 PS1 games for a sealed copy of it.
played the FAN translation of Langrisser 2 and Der Langrisser.
I do own a copy of the remake on Steam. have not played it yet.
Didn't this game allow you to choose the old or new art?
If they were still around i feel like this would have been published by working designs😢
As a huge langrisser fan "played 1 the many versions of 2, 4, 5 and the 3ds title) the langrisser games are much more enjoyable to play with emulators. The first games have enemy turns that take forever and for langrisser 4 and 5 while has fun gameplay is definitely on the slow side.
Music is still one of my favorites tho
I completed both 1 and 2 steam versions and it was fun.
Great! Both are very good and overlooked.
The remake looks very fleshed out, I dont think I can get behind that mobile game aesthetic though but that's just a personal preference! I love the look of thw original.
Its too bad they never worked on releasing a remake on the 3rd-5th ones
LANGRISSER MOBILE is still the best free Tactical RPG on the playstore hands down.
Interesting, I haven't tried that one!
Saying a mobile game is good is akin to saying a version of a street drug is good.
In my backlog. So many.
I think it is better than FE and wish more grid-based tactics would do it like Langrisser 1&2. Love the ability to see all endings and that it has multiple endings.
Storyline wise I think 2 is equal in story to FFT and Tactics Orge.
Right on, very overlooked series! Thanks for chiming in with your thoughts.
Dang. We keep getting g closer to Super Robot Wars...
Maybe so!
I played the first one on emulator, only half of it was translated and I made it to the final guy and every time I was too weak to win at max level it was so hard
It's out as Warsong on the Genesis if you want to give it another go!
@@Xygor I had played the new updates too. Definitely good games
The remakes have a different way to calculating damage against the enemy but it feels similar. Theyre closer to Langrisser 5 or Mobile instead of being true to how the old mechanics worked
My opinion, Langrisser 2 (genesis) is better than Der Langrisser. I felt like the branching paths were unnecessary.
I wasn't too crazy about the remakes.
Thanks for this take, that's the one version I haven't tried! But I should.
Langrisser 2 on Genesis is the single-best iteration of the series, bar none.
@@analogmoz Put me down as another person who thinks Langrisser 2 on Genesis is the best the series ever was.
I must play this game, and find out if the Princes's ass gets bruised in that battle... Jokes aside, this game looks like a solid entry in the early to mid 90s tactical Jrpgs, that we never got.
I own it on switch but never really played it. The problem for me was that it was just too many units.
I like when you move a couple of core units, but here it's like 20+ every turn. It was just too much and got boring fast.
Tbh it's easy enough that you can just bring 1-2 units for each leader (for a better challenge too) or just leave them moving by themselves for the most part. Moving them all individually really does take too long.
This game mashup dilutes all things good into a sad, commercial mush.
I beg everyone to play the originals for their stunning gameplay.
To clarify: these newer games are like sad Flash-game versions of really good games.
Weren't there Langrisser sequels on Sega Saturn?
Langrisser 3, 4, and 5 were all on the Saturn, yes
I love this series it's better than fire emblem tactics ogre final fantasy tactics and more please ppl support other developers besides the same old people. This series is highly underrated
Yes it is! I wish it got more attention.
This game is enjoyable but some chapters from the original are not in this remake and I find some mapp more fun to play in the original
Great game. I don't know what you think a remake is, but this is certainly a remake.
The cheap art style of the newer version really ruined the chances of this appealing to a wider base, the original art is a million times better
Fair enough, I can understand the issues with it. I agree that a more realistic style would have been better.
Having played the original Warsong and Langrisser II on the Megadrive or Genesis... I cannot get over how the melee units in this game never quite bother get into melee... instead stay in the middle slashing or poking at air... and the revamp of the HP system.... which makes it so different from the original game.
I only wish it didn't look like a mobile game.
True, I guess it kind of does!
I must disagree with the remaster of Langrisser 1&2.
The game is beautiful etc... but the challenge is totally gone frome my point of view. Lanrisser 1 on megadrive was fantastic as a small mistake could cost you permadeath of one of your captain. In the remake, the AI is absolutely not agressive enough. On megadrive, it would kill your character as soon as they can.
(I played the Japanese megadrive version so I can t say for the american version)
This is just my opinion of course😉
Getting a permadeath for a small mistake doesn't sound very fun. I would just reload.
@@Fragenzeichenplatte permadeath indeed. But the fact that the AI was agressive was really fun as you had to think over tactics
Nice game, never played the remake, i dont like the new artstyle. The genesis version has less paths than the snes version.
I can understand this, it's a fair point - the art style is definitely a little different.
There's actually an option where you can choose to use the old artstyle. Iirc, the same option is also given for the soundtrack.
@@Irvinning yeah, i have to play the whole "remake" with the OG art because the remake art is so disgusting
although the mobile art is the superior redesigns tbh
@@Ultimecea90 The mobile did such a good job with the art, it's crazy.
