Love it Liam. My wife and I both work from home. We've been scheduling 15 minutes of cleaning in the middle of every work day - 1) it's a welcome break from screens, and 2) actually makes keeping on top of cleaning and laundry SUPER easy (it's amazing what you can do in 15 mins!). We set a timer and when it goes off, we stop, refreshed and reset!

yes, very good. I am an old lawyer but still enjoying it 37 years in because of that kind of thing - first of all when you are really into a piece of work there is "flow" which tends to make people happy. Secondly little things like in my case as worked from home since the 90s doing yoga in the garden, pulling a few weeds up, cleaning a room (okay may be that one is not that much fun!)

The micro break concept is actually very helpful. When we went out, it was not that difficult to take breaks like these and even 5 minutes would be so refreshing but now with everything online, my motivation and good mood goes up and down like a freaking rollercoaster no predicting what will come next😂 and ngl the dips are a bit hard to come back from. And when that happens youtube study channels like yours and some others come to the rescue. So thank you for sharing these videos and part of your lives with us! 🧡
Also, needless to say, Beth is amazing as always! That chocolate cake looked so goood!!

Actually, I'm a final undergrad student and an aspiring corporate solicitor myself. I know I shouldnt be doing these things like reading the laws, researching (amongst others) in advance and ive also got your GDL and some of your LPC notes to have a bit of extra resources. That micro and macro tasks and breaks... super awesome content Liam!

Great series Liam! You are delivering quality video's and they are enjoyable to watch. My reference point is that I am in the same legal profession (but then on the business 'side') in my 3rd year and I believe you are one of the few - if not alone - in this profession and age segment on youtube. What works great for me is to always write everything down (especially during meetings), distribute action points between people and days, and leave no action point behind!
    Keep going!

Nice video Liam, I really feel I can resonate and apply a lot of this. Particularly interesting thought about the ‘quiet times’, I felt the same as you it can’t look like I’m not doing a lot, but I really should appreciate these times more as they will become much more rare as I progress!!

This guy's clever; a real showman, he's not sad or needs to be "happier" necessarily, for he's selling us product as he goes along which are associated to his daily activities or are they REALLY? Thusly, needs to play up the urgency for us to impulsively buy as he has benefitted from implementing said products to his life. The reality is, is that he leads a charmed life when the camera is off, especially when he gets to snuggle with that specimen of cuddly perfection standing in his kitchen.

So I really dont understand all of this. You talk about how you are happy despite being busy and how you manage that. But that seems to be built on the underlying premise that life and work are pretty much congruent. What about the premise that we work in order to live?
Also, lets keep some things straight. The following things that humans need to stay healthy physically and mentally are well documented in the psychological literature (and streamlined in the self development literature, which you seem to promote as well - the usual for an influencer):
    - 8 hours of sleep (although there is variance, this is the mean, not the upper range),
    - good nutrition (you seem to achieve that still, but many people in your kind of jobs eat chocolate bars through all-nighters),
    - personal relationships and personal projects (you have a girlfriend living with you which fulfills some of this but I cant see how you find time and energy during the week to "take care" of both of these points),
    - intense enough physical workouts (you definately dont seem to regularly find the time and energy for that),
    - intellectual exploration of different topics (also little time and energy for that - when was the last time you read a book that was not about work or self development)
    - a feeling of purpose and personal growth (this is something these kinds of jobs can surely offer)
This is not to judge you or the way you chose to live, but it is important for me to clarify for your followers (because you have many and an influence on them), how far outside the interval of what is considered to make people healthy and happy your life really is. And yes, there is individual variance and you seem to be someone who is fairly happy - but these kind of jobs and environments generally dont support reaching any of the above (with the exception of purpose and growth) mentioned criteria for a healthy (psychologically and physically) life. They just don't.
Take care and good luck to you.

4:10 taking micro happy breaks.... Hmmmm.... This is really terrible.... It means we are seeking satisfaction in everything... So what we are doing is escaping the fact that we are dissatisfied.... That is where the real issue is that we are dissatisfied.... You could have been anything... You didn't need to be a lawyer.... But really it was a movement of continual dissatisfaction that led you to where you are....disatisfaction and then seeking satisfaction.
You'll never be satisfied until you/we really get to the bottom of our disatisfaction... Because the disatisfaction is the fact.

If you could give one piece of advice to a law student what would it be?

    • @liam.porritt
      @liam.porritt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The same piece of advice I think I'd give to any student - while it may feel like the secret is memorising tons of case names (or random information), these bits of knowledge are nothing without the firm backbone of a very solid understanding of principles - why things are the way they are, what the key issues / areas of uncertainty are, how the law fits together to make a coherent whole. Focus on detail, but only once you have an understanding of the bigger picture :)

1:10 you talk of "finding happiness"... You cannot find it.... It doesnt exist as an object outside of you... It is then when the body and mind is in equilibrium.... To seek it is to be out of that equilibrium.... Besides we are not after happiness really... What we are after is security for "the person that we think we are"... And that's why you will work 60 hours a week plus and when you make partner you will also make those below you work 60 hours plus because you/we are insecure and afraid and incapable and telling people/partners and clients to fuck off. Truth be told they too are afraid of their seniors.
