Corporate lawyer life in PARIS - wahhh! I've been working here as a trainee lawyer for 4 months now, so thought it was time to share a busy week in my life as a corporate lawyer, TH-camr and business owner, so you can see how I manage my time 😃
Juggling a pretty intense career and side hustles is, to be honest, pretty demanding... OK, very demanding, at times. I'm doing a pretty good job (I think lol) at doing well in my work, growing my TH-cam channel and the business around that, and also starting Menos, mine and Beth's sustainable backpack company. BUT that doesn't mean I don't have times where I really feel overwhelmed and like I'm kinda drowning / filled with doubt that I'm actually doing the right thing by trying to juggle so many different commitments!
Overall - Paris is awesome, and I've been prioritising enjoying life here as much as I can, while still making videos and pushing Menos forward. I've been working in the antitrust department (competition law) of a magic circle law firm since I got here, and have found it super interesting overall. Plus, I LOVE my colleagues here - share an office with two incredible people, and the whole team is really amazing. I've learnt A TON about a slightly different working culture, and have a few lessons (some featured in this video) to take back to London 😊
Time for pastries, drafting, and a petanque in the park... Enjoy xx

    About Me
I'm a trainee lawyer, part-time TH-camr, son, brother, startup founder, boyfriend, black coffee drinker and plant dad. I graduated from Cambridge University (where I studied French and Spanish), topped my law school class and now work for a corporate law firm in London as a trainee solicitor (which takes up a lot of my time)!
Around that, I'm a big fan of discovering new ways of thinking, of balancing work with life, and of performing to the very best of my ability. Ohh, and being happy. And I try to share all that on this TH-cam channel 😀
Fun fact: I believe we massively overplay the role of “natural talent” 😮 AND… I also believe that TOGETHER, WE ARE ALL CAPABLE OF POSITIVITY, PRODUCTIVITY AND SUCCESS.

Hey Matias (and Anthéa) - exactly - so start with (for the first year), it was just me editing everything. To be honest, that was when I was a student so had a little more time than I do now. As a corporate lawyer, I’d probably be able to put out half as much content if I didn’t have my two editors to edit all my content! I don’t have a social media manager though, so it’s still me posting and replying etc! 😊

You're so good at explaining corporate concepts and I love learning more about what you do as a trainee. It would be amazing if you did a series or a masterclass after your finish your TC on tips you would give to a trainee, for example how you deal with competing deadlines, managing others, managing stress as a trainee, and organising yourself.

Your 'day in the life' videos are my favourites on your channel. Nice one, Liam. It's great to see what it's like working as a lawyer in Paris. Just out of curiosity, did you study EU law while you were at university, or did you have to learn it as you go? Do UK university law courses include EU law as a component?

    • @liam.porritt
      @liam.porritt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Thanks so much!! I did indeed study EU law - I think the requirement to study EU law has now changed, but as much of EU law is now UK law, I presume students study some of that stuff, which will be helpful when working with EU law matters. We also have training from the firm and kinda learn as we go too 😊

I am a lawyer. I have studied law in Paris II university. Some observations: 1. 2 years ago you have posted a video on how you have passed your law school finals. 2. 1 year ago you have posted a video on how much money you make as a lawyer in one year or less than one year since having your law degree. 3. And now after 1 year since you were a lawyer in London you post a video that you are a lawyer in Paris.
So many inaccuracies in your videos...: 1. A law degree is not sufficient to become a lawyer. You have to pass the bar exams after that. And to pass the bar exams you have to be an apprentice lawyer (aka not a lawyer yet) for nearly 2 years +plus give the bar exams and pass them aka succeed in them..where is that video that you passed the bar exams in London bar???
So at 2 years after graduation from law school you can't be a lawyer let alone a lawyer in Paris since you have studied anglosaxon law in the UK.
To be a lawyer in Paris you must have studied french law in france or european law in an eu country (uk is not an eu country any more plus uk has a different legal system than continental Europe) and then pass the exams in Paris bar association. In fact you have to deposit a tons of papers at the Paris bar association and get a decision on your application if they recognize the validity of your uk diplomas and UK law degrees in France. This is a time consuming procedure. And even then you are registered in the paris bar as an european lawyer. Thus i think your videos are all hoaxes for viewers. I do not know if you are a real life lawyer and I doubt you are one in Paris but I think you portray these things in your videos for viewers you in fact mislead people on the time needed to become a lawyer after law school graduation and to become a lawyer in Paris after graduating from a non contintetal europe law school.

You are absolutely wrong.. the London Bar for him IS CALLED the LPC.. it’s a one year course post law degree which u do and then you need two years of practice after that to become a lawyer .. at a global firm like his.. he can be a lawyer in Paris .. he would just be an English lawyer working on English contracts in Paris or maybe even working on French contracts without actually being the leading lawyer etc on it. You would only need to be a French/Paris lawyer if you were opining on French contracts and law.

Please get your facts straight before commenting with negativity and envy on something you do not know. He is a lawyer in the UK (solicitor). To become a solicitor in the UK you do not need to pass a bar exam. After your LLB in the UK, you need to work as a trainee in a law firm for two years. Then that is it, you are a solicitor. He is working at a law firm in Paris because his international law firm which also has a boutique in Paris gives the opportunity to associates or trainees to make a secondment in one of their international offices for six months. So he is indeed working as a secondment lawyer in Paris.

Do you have to take a law degree to become a corporate lawyer at a top firm or could you just take a GDL or another route?

Any degree where you have to work through lots of information and critique and précis well, would be good. I work in the Uni sector in NZ in Science, but the Uni I work for went out to business and public sector about two years ago to find out the key skills and attributes they need, and actually it’s the Humanities degrees that really have that. Reading a wide range of sources, writing, research, critical thinking and analysis and the ability to format and explain to any audience. Good luck with your choices
