    I get what Stephen is saying about the jars, but someone who’s going to buy a book called five ingredient cooking is not the type of person to make their own pesto. This is clearly a book for beginners who usually make their dinners from a box

      @andyt2k 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It's not just beginners, it's people who are busy, making your own pesto is a bunch of ingredients, time, equipment, washing up etc, if you're cooking for a family, you put some shrimp in the pan with some garlic, some wine (which you can have a glass of at dinner) some pesto and some pasta, that's a 10 minute meal with 2 pans to wash up and one of them only needs a rinse and a wipe

    • @willyonthejuice
      @willyonthejuice 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Simon Andert yep and every step of the way he has been counteracted with things like uber eats and meal prep services. I have had the book for months as it was released in australia last year and it is very versatile. you can change an ingredient or add an extra ingredient and you have a complete different dish. the point of the book is to be a base

      The first thing you wonder is if it's personal, be it their history or something else; but you can definitely notice there's a little bit of an ego battle going on. Then you wonder if it's a US vs UK thing, but you can also see how Stephen makes a great effort to try to make light of things and to turn the mood. I noticed then how Jamie was turning down Stephen's attempts to be humorous but perhaps therein lies the problem: a difference in humor approach... anyone?

    I know it has been mentioned here that using the pesto sauce is cheating as there are more than five ingredients in there, but you need to understand two things: (1) The aim of the book is to make it simple for novices or busy people to cook food, so using easily-bought items should be acceptable; and (2) Dried pasta is made from at least four ingredients anyway: flour, eggs, salt and water.
    If you then counter by saying that you could have made pasta+sauce using only five ingredients: dried pasta, pre-made pasta sauce, salt, oil and water, then I could say that your pasta would be ordinary and lacking in the special flavour of the shrimp and rose that are not normally found in most pre-made pasta sauce. In conclusion, I do not think this recipe is special, but it serves the aim of the book.

    • @georgvonrechenberg2217
      @georgvonrechenberg2217 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, dried pasta is often made of nothing else than flour or semolina and water. But the water isn't present anymore in the *dried* pasta of course (ok, it gets added again by cooking it ^^). Eggs really shouldn't be in there if you want pasta that's somewhat italian.

    • @TokyoBlue587
      @TokyoBlue587 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have time or inclination to make pesto from scratch, when I can buy a jar. Colbert was missing the whole point of the book.

    • @MarySanchez-qk3hp

      I'm not a novice. I don't like him because he's arrogant. PBS is chock-full of cooking shows where cooks and chefs don't talk down to viewers, and know they can and will learn how to cook and bake. They teach you why and how foods interact, and how to get a great result whether a newbie or an old hand. Even Jacques Pepin's "fast food" is superior to Oliver, and they're all made quickly, in real time, on the show. Anyone can understand and follow any of the cooking shows on PBS, and the ingredients aren't expensive. Oliver's addressing people who are so helpless that they need to have a tomato shipped to them with instructions on how to slice and cook it. I don't know anyone like that. Most people already have three to five "go-to" home recipes that they do very well, that have more than five ingredients. They know how to cook beyond his kindergarten recipes already.

    @Steven: I'm impressed. You have decent knife skills for a late night host! Tossing the pan properly was just the icing on the cake so to speak.
    That said, yeah, you're right. Using a sauce or other ingredient from a jar kinda is cheating - and of course the book explains that the 5 ingredients is omitting kitchen staples like salt or pepper. On the other hand, and I think Jamie didn't get that across at all, the point is to have simple recipes everyone can cook at home with a very modest skillset. While I tend to make my own ketchup - I do use the one from the dollar store every now and then when I'm in a pinch. Nothing to lose sleep over and to be honest: if that jar of salsa is all that's processed in that dish it's a much better dish than 90% of Americans eat every day (and most likely a lot cheaper than the average fast food too).
