What a complete nonsense analysis from someone so removed from the situation that they cannot understand that it was certainly not a Tory split between those who believed Brexit was a success and those who believe Brexit was a disaster. The key issue was that while the UK left the Treaty of Rome, the foundation of the European union, the Conservative party was elected on a 80 seat majority to implement Brexit and deliver the social, trade and financial opportunities it presented. Instead, the conservative party delivered the diametrically opposite policies, refusing to vary European union regulations, enacting only very limited overseas trade deals which largely replicated rather than improved existing deals, and then tied up Northern Ireland as a vassal state of the European union and made it impossible for us toexercise the sovereignty which would’ve allowed us to close our borders to illegal immigration, invest in training and education for British people and to manage our economy effectively. Not least, voters blamed Boris Johnson and his Conservative administration for locking down the country in egregious and anti-Conservative policy which should never have been enacted.
I would venture most voters blamed the Conservatives for a whole raft of incompetence that has less to do with your analysis -- a decade of austerity; starved and crumbling services; no growth and falling real wages; chronic party infighting; unending cabinet churn (can you name the 8 secretaries of education since 2018?); the Truss mini-budget, which shattered the party's reputation for economic management.
