I didn't find it horrifying or terrifying at all, the controls sucked major balls (it was a wrong kind of challenge to shake the mannequins off), and it wasn't as profound as some people say. Like, wow, they changed the color of the woman's dress based on how I answered a question... mind blown. It looked nice, the exploration was soothing, but it wasn't Silent Hill in the slightest. As an "SH-themed" game, I wouldn't call it offensively bad or anything, just unnecessary.

I had been a step dad for about 3 years before I played SHSM and oh boy, every time young Cheryl says "I love my daddy" makes me tear up. When i got to the ending for the first time and everything clicked, I straight up cried. I love my little girl more than anything and the thought of her being stuck in the cold after my death is horrible. I haven't replayed it since my first playthrough but after this video I might have to dive back in for some more emotional punishment.

A lot to love in this game honestly. Love the ice imagery, love the concept of basing this take on the bad ending of the first game, love the themes they explore and they way they show it in the otherworld; I just wish it all came together a little more cohesively in the end. Overall a pretty cool experience that could have been a really great experience.

As a stand-alone game it's okay. It's just when you put Silent Hill on the cover that expectations take over. As one of the few Survival Horror games on Wii and PSP, this title holds its own. As a Silent Hill game on PS2, there are five other games that do it better and a sloth of horror titles competing for your attention. Rule of Rose, Fatal Frame, Siren, and Kuon all fill the role of scary or creepy horror that do it better than Shattered Memories.

I've always had a soft spot for this game. I respect the Hell out of its ambition and what it does with the original game. I also think it does something that the other Western titles kind of fail to do. It taps into something really raw emotionally. The way it handles Cheryl's perspective on both her parents' failing marriage as well as Harry's death feels really raw and personal, especially in regards to a lot of the smaller details. The pause menu and main menu both have a VHS aesthetic, as if you're interfacing with the menu on a VCR. It's meant to represent Cheryl constantly rewatching tapes of her father, never being able to accept the fact that he's gone forever. I think there's something really powerful about that, and the endings where she finally confronts her imagined version of Harry are also all really emotional and effective.

One interesting thing about the Other World is that in Silent Hill 2 Angela implies that every person sees the Other World differently, she seeing all engulfed by flames. For Harry in this game or to be more accurate, Cheryl, the Other World is a completely frozen place, almost like if she desired that the memories of her father stayed frozen in time

I unironically really love the take that shattered memories did for Silent Hill 1.
It was the same story, but from a new angle. And the new take on the “other world” was honestly refreshing because we where so used to the reds, and browns from 1 on.

What I loved about SHSM was it gave an entire perspective to SH1 story. What if it's not about the cults, what if SH1 was about a man dying and his last moments or experience after life was a search for his precious daughter? And most importantly, how would he be remembered by the daughter?
The experience of it to me when I finished it was, realizing I was playing as the memory, it would make it, for lack of a better word, remembrance, this is why every single good or bad change seemed justified, it's not about how Harry, even in that nightmare perhaps of his last moments thinking about his daughter was experiencing, it's about what his daughter imagined his experience would be. We are the memory, so if we're playing as the sleezebag, she IS remembering him as the sleezbag, if we play as the loving father who's main goal was looking for her daughter, it's what she's remembering, or imagining him to be. So if the other world is a frozen one, it's because it's not what harry felt, it's what she imagines him to have felt.
On one hand I entirely agree that this game had all the makings of being an stand alone title, using the mechanics to tell a story that wouldn't have had anything to do with SH at all. I felt the same way about SH4 which is why for a long time I believed the myth that it was either none canon or started as a non SH title which IIRC was false.
On the other hand, since it's a story that by it's nature is telling another story from another perspective, if it wasn't about SH1, it would've told a story we didn't experience it through the eyes of the other character.
I was also lucky enough to play it Wii and believe me, the sounds coming through controller was only a small part of it, it was really well done in terms of good use of wiimote and nunchuck for a none nintendo game.
And my last positive point about it was while sound design may have left a lot to be desired, the english dub being filled with a lot of good and familiar anime dub veterans gave it an extra point to me always.
I hope one day you'll experience it on Wii MFS, and maybe, years from now, a short side video about the wii experience of 'that old series of videos I did I SH' video would pop up.
Excellent work, son, I couldn't be more proud.

There's also a hint on which doors to go through during the Otherworld sequence. The worlds that appear per segment is random and to progress through, you need to select the right doors to go through. The hint is if there's a frozen ice on top of the door, that is the correct door.

Best American-made Silent Hill by far. I remember this was the first game I played in the franchise overall, and I got a sense that this was 'diet' in terms of horror. I enjoyed the story and gameplay fine, but it wasn't very scary and definitely made jumping into Silent Hill 1 after a much more terrifying endeavour.

I realized that for some reason Japan is so much better than America at delivering actual genuine fear. Idk if it’s the culture or what, but with this Silent Hill it showed me that American studios can instead innovate on aspects of storytelling to make an experience deeper. The psychology idea was absolutely incredible, and I’m sad that it isn’t implemented more in other games

    • @neoyaku
      @neoyaku 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@DisDatK9 I think it has to do with the west culturally understanding things in literal terms. Even the implementation of a “psychologist” in Silent Hill Shatter Memories is a literal attempt to make the game more “psychological”. Silent Hill games from Japan don’t require this sort of 2+2=4 approach… things are more subtle, creepier, more thoughtful - IMO.

Truly the most underrated entry in the series. The therapy aspect was really unsettling and made for a fascinating playthrough. Just for the record, though.. the otherworld is a little flat and doesn’t reflect the story, but the creatures in it do. They evolve over the course of the game based on your decisions if you pay attention to them.

I've always loved this title for how different it is. The icy atmosphere was a nice change of pace. Overall, I chose to look at this title as an exploration of an alternate story arch that follows the first game. In one of the Bad (non-canon) ending from SH1, it's revealed that Harry died in the car crash at the beginning of that game. In that story arch, it's easy to imagine a world where the events of SH were purely fiction. Cheryl lost her dad and miraculously survived a fatal crash and never got over that. 18 years later, she's in therapy trying to deal with that loss. It's similar to the timeliness branches in LoZ if you think about it (although this is more straightforward overall). This one will forever hold a special place in my heart, blacksheep or not. 😆

I hold this game with me because it speaked to me on a personal level, back in 2010 my parents divorced and that being one of the main themes of this game really kinda help me "cope" with that. Also the twist is heartbreaking! Even if the gameplay is a little repetitive and the horror elements kinda lacking, i stil think this is the better tittle of the non Team Silent games. Also, i just realize that the song that plays when Cheryl "meets" Harry (34:50) is the same melody as the Music Box puzzle from SH2. That's a nice Detail.

Same here! I always forget about it because I don't really connect it to Silent Hill, but it was so beautiful walking through the snowy town while listening to interesting dialogue, the psychological games were a nice touch and it used the Wii controls pretty well. The ending was a jaw-dropper for sure. It's a shame the chasing sequences felt so forced and having this clear distinction between safe and hostile environments took a lot of tension out of it. The game would really have benefited from freeing itself from having to be Silent Hill.

Shattered Memories is the sort of game that I feel almost has to exist as a re-imagining of a pre-established title, as it might be harder to make the twists and connections as interesting if they were completely original characters, though likely a team with more time and budget could pull it off. The Otherworld in SM feels like an afterthought almost, they likely did not have enough time to give them more content and thus mostly included them as these brief chases because, well, Silent Hill game has to have monsters and a weird other dimension.

Honestly, this is my favorite SH game because of how different it is, and being a major in Psychology, this really hits me on a personal level.
Sure the therapy sessions are a bit bare bones, but it helps knowing the character as each changes shows how different we can shape not only Harry's journey, but also Cheryl's end on whether she is able to let go of her dad peacefully or not.
This game brought back my love for Silent Hill again and it always be a part of me that helped me being interested in Psychology too.
That and the fact Harry Mason looks like my dad.

One of my favorite entries in the entire series. Yes its very different from the original SH1 but that's precisely why I think its so cool. If you're gonna remake (or I guess, "re-imagine") a game without really trying something new other than giving it modern graphics, then what is even the point? I really like SM's take on the original game's story and I love how it feels more like a personal drama/introspective horro than a supernatural one. My only real complaint is the chase sequences which are a bit bland, but other than that, great game (and the icy look of the other world is cool as hell anyways)
Also, for anyone interested in playing it, apparently all the graphical issues in the PCSX2 emulator were fixed in the latest nightly builds (1.7 or higher), so feel free to try this great game out :) Really wish they would release a remaster on PC or something, but you know, its Konami.

The ambiance and story of Shattered Memories made it one of the best western hills, but the bad gameplay is really hard to look past though
It also has one if not my favorite piece of music from any silent hill game, Hell Frozen Rain is amazing

SH 1998 is about a father who is searching his missing daughter at Silent Hill.Silent Hill Two is about James Sunderland.Silent Hill Three is about a girl who wants to take revenge on a cult who killed her father.Silent Hill The Room is about a normal man who lives in the apartment who is not able to get out from his room.

I really like Shattered Memories because you can apply its reimagined details to the original SH1 and honestly it still works. I like to imagine SH1 as being what Cheryl is telling Kaufmann at the start of their sessions, and even having him be an antagonist to Alessa (who is Cheryl in the story) because she views his therapy as detrimental to the views she’s built about her dad. And Dahlia’s role as being a monster as Cheryl perceives her gets shown much more overtly in that game. Shattered Memories story then serves as a resolution to the progress (or regress depending on the ending) Cheryl has made so far in her visits.

I believe the levels change based on your profile as well, one of the crepiest moments I've ever experienced in any video game is harry running through the pitch black woods only to get a text of a presumably nude, drunk and distressed looking cheryl with a text from a person saying that they're gonna "take care of her" or something along those lines, having to then continue running through the woods imagining harry's thoughts was pretty distressing, but you either didn't encounter this scenario or left it out of the video. On the same note, I don't remember the frozen boat section with the mug shot text

Oh hey, it's one of my favorite Silent Hill games, genuinely I do believe this game does a wonderful job on retreading what SH 1 set up. While it may not have much replay value, you can absolutely tell they put a lot of care into this game. one thing that i do love is that all phone numbers you see in this game on posters, on items, in notes, CAN be called. And they usually have some funny, weird or creepy calls. The Konami Help Line being the funniest in my memory as they just straight up say "You are in Silent Hill. I'm sorry but we can not help you at this point".
But focusing on the idea of Trauma and what it does to a person, especially after something as traumatic as losing your only parent, it's really touching when you finally reach the Lighthouse and look at the door. Wish it was more than a running hallway simulator but I've come to terms with it.

I played this game on Wii and I loved it! I loved the story, the twist was unexpected and shocked me, The fact the game psych evaluates you, the fact the enemies change to your choices, the fact you don't fight anyone, you run as I would if I was trapped in silent hill with some pretty shady monsters. I think it mostly got hate because of the Wii controls and I admit it was dodgy at times but I ignored it also the soundtrack!

Shattered Memories, next to Silent Hill 2 are the best entries of the series, becouse the story isn't about main (kind of silly) canon, but rather shifts to more personal stories about broken relationships in which "monsters" are allegory of broken emotions. Life itself is sometimes terrifying enough.

  • @Aceken23

What I’ve notice with the videos recently is that with the American developed silent hill games that their respective videos are getting shorter. Like silent hill 2’s video it pushed an hour and twenty minutes. While these recent videos barely push that hour mark. Really shows how the quality of the games are dwindling, or maybe I’m just looking way to into it.

Shattered Memories is very short, you can beat it in a day. That doesn’t mean it’s bad quality, it’s just a different type of game. I and most people put SM ahead of Origins, Homecoming, and Downpour. A short experience, but very interesting and a lot of fun.

    • @Aceken23
      @Aceken23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@starcrysis23 they aren’t bad games, not at all. But they’re not the greatest either. Interesting shattered memories was supposed to be it’s own thing, until Konami just kinda slapped silent hill onto it. Something to add, Konami gave a lot of those companies barely any time (or care for that matter) to develop these games. Somewhat related to time constraints, The final boss of 3 was developed in two days. I don’t think these games are terrible but there is no denying it that there is a quality drop in the later games. Not these companies fault at all but Konami’s shitty management and business practices as a whole. Just wish that Konami really put more care and dedication to their franchises.

Playing this game on a modded Wii is absolutely necessary for the best experience IMO. I tried emulating it using Joycons instead of Wiimote and nunchuck, but the quicktime scenes where you literally have to throw monsters off of you didn't work properly, so I went back to the original Wii console. It's quite unique when you play it how it was meant to be played.

I can't abide by this game specifically because it's a "reimagining" of sh1. I really love the first one, and the while the interesting gameplay and even plot of this one intrigues me. i just wish they didn't transpose sh1 character names into completely different characters. I actually really like the switch up that the main character you play has been dead the whole time, and the daughter is the one who's alive with the psychiatrist recapping the story you're playing. Again, i do like this one well enough with the only caveat being that i absolutely hate that its just a whole different story than sh1 and this should have just been a totally new sh title standing on its own merit.
