    Nice to see an honest review of a Chinese bike. They have improved vastly in the last few years. In the UK we do not get so many 250s so I have a 125, many of which are imported thanks to our stupid learner laws. It has taken everything I have thrown at it for the last few years and never given any trouble. I bought it as a town runabout, but after a few mods (like you I can`t resist tinkering) gearing raised slightly, de-catted and ported, it is now quite a capable little machine and will cruise all day at 60. The reliability of any bike depends on how you look after it, these tiddlers don`t hold much oil, so I change the oil every 1000 miles.

    • @SteverGarage
      @SteverGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment, It’s interesting hearing about import laws and how they vary!
      Emission laws here around motorcycles are kinda hard to enforce and seem to be loose for now.

    I bought the Hawk 250 DLX 2019. Black model. Owned 3 yrs and it climbs up rocky terrain every other week. Pushes 80mph with sprocket change. Has a few upgrades. Windshield. Handle bar guards. Engine Brush guard. Bluetooth speaker. X-Ring chain. Performance spark plug. Gel battery. Strapped a Dickies logo fanny pack on the rear and it's perfect. Just check for any loose parts from time to time. Put it together with no experience. Easy to maintain. Engines built to last forever. Proud to own for $2400. And still upgrading.....

    You my friend are a true pioneer. And the reason I took the leap. I now own a ‘21 Hawk. It seems some issues with this model have been addressed and some still haunt it. The metal is definitely a major one. Any modifications requiring cutting or welding on the bike reveal just how cheap the metal is. So just to reiterate your claims…..not all has been resolved. But I always remind myself what I paid for it. I’ve learned a lot from wrenching, improving on, and modifying this bike. Even if it lets me down now and again, it has already returned to me my investment. I’d encourage anyone who has some mechanical background that wants to start riding to give it a chance

    Interesting review!! @8 mins you talk about yours going through batteries. Just curious if you've ever tried a battery tender with a quick disconnect (name brand "battery tender" includes those as part of the kit). I'm running tenders with quick disconnects for my 2008 HD Road King, my 2015 Arctic Cat ATV and just got a 23 Hawk DLX EFI that I have already purchased it's own tender for. The batteries for my HD and AC ATV are ORIGINAL!!!!! My friend also has regularly tendered the battery for his '04 250 Ozark -ORIGINAL battery!!! Tenders do work wonders on batteries, anything that sits for any period of time just gets plugged in, and viola -saves$$$$😁

    I strongly considered getting one of these 3 years ago but ended up getting an xr250 instead. Funny bc my bikes Goin for 2k now when I paid 1k. I figured they're like you said comparable to a 30 year old Japanese bike but worse lol. I bet you can get spare parts easier and cheaper tho. Good to see it's still ticking some reviews say they just fall apart

      I have owned many xr200r 250r and even 250L
      I currently have a xr200r that’s plated for the street and love it.
      The bikes are actually quite (xr200 and hawk)
      The xr250 has a lot more power then the hawk!

      I've got a 2020 and had it just over a year with 4k miles. Been a great bike, a few Chinese related issues but nothing major. Loved mine and totally worth the $1,500! 7k miles it a decent number of miles for a year!

      @@Vorm17 I'm debating between the hawk and a TBr7. I live off a gravel road for miles. But i was wondering if it will be to talk im 5'7 or 5'8. Also how's those forks holding up

    • @Vorm17
      @Vorm17 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-km5kj8xh1x My dad rides the TBR7 and is 5'8" or maybe 5'10", he is a more experienced rider so he's comfortable on the bikes. You'll be just fine but if it is your first bike the height might make it just a bit tougher in the very beginning. The Hawk has nice and stiff forks, they work and don't really need to be upgraded or anything to be serviceable, not amazing by any stretch but okay! The TBR7 is a more street oriented version of these Chinese bikes and as such it has very soft pre-load on both the forks and the rear suspension. My dad bottoms it out a lot more than I do on the Hawk. The TBR7 definitely has some stuff that is nice, but one of the things you might like is that it is a couple inches shorter on seat height. This is mainly due to the odd 17" rear and 20" front tires. The Hawk comes with the standard 18" rear and 21" front. You can also lower the front of both bikes by loosening the forks and letting them slide up on the steering column a couple of inches, this will not lose you any suspension travel. The rear can also be tightened to lower it a bit, but that will cause a stiffer suspension. Either way they have been great! The TBR7 was bought used from someone and as such has had quite a few more problems, the person who had it before wasn't the best mechanic and not quite as careful, but she runs really well. Just make sure to tighten any bolts you can see!

    • @SteverGarage
      @SteverGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At a minimum I turn fuel off and run it out.
      Best thing you can do is put fuel stable in and just start it and run it like once a month.
      Loosening the drain screw and emptying the carb bowl is good practice for long storage.
      For me with carbs are so cheap if it gets junked up I just put a new one one. Keep afew PZ30s from Amazon on the shelf since they are like 20$ and I can change them out in like 15 min.
      Fuel stable, drain carb, and try not to let it sit any longer then 3 months
      I don’t drain the tank it’s too big haha

      Not sure which clip your thinking of, I wouldn’t recommend taking the hawk to a motocross track. I had it a the desert 100 race and have hit some minor like 1 foot jumps out in the practice area for fun.

      @@SteverGarage I'm sure from looking at the China riders forums there's a couple people that have probably gotten into the 20s at least, the reason I put so many miles down is it's my primary transportation, and I have a motorcycle only license, I have never tested for a car so I cannot drive them currently, this means doing my day-to-day stuff going to work etc I put 20 to 50 miles a day on it

    Fun bike, you got to wrench a lot though. I love my hawk though she is a needy bitch who tries to kill me every now and then. Out of the box speedometer broke, wheel bearing and front tire tube threw me down the highway. That was a trip to er. So the money I saved buying Chinese cost 4000 in hospital bills. But I fixed it up and cautiously run it. I’ve gotten really good at tube changes. I gave up on trying to replace wheel bearings I just buy the whole wheel. My boys Apollo just blew a rear wheel bearing. They will figure out bearings someday then we will be in trouble.

    After reviewing Shanghai Auto Show, everyone should stop bitching Chinese bikes, they are capable of making decent motorcycles for top $$$, it took Japanese 7years to gain respect from US consumers, the current China bikes are perfect for ppl who want to get their hands dirty, learn how everything works, beginner rider, budget friendly, not afraid to drop it. WHY NOT!

    • @SteverGarage

      Hi Mike,
      I use my hawk as a dirt bike 99% of the time (trails, single track)
      2200 miles off road equates to around 120/140 hours on the engine/bike.
      I think a lot of people are worried about the longevity of these bikes and if they can last the test of time. Additionally 2015 is one of the first years if not the first of the hawk 250.
      I think having the bike 7 years makes a “7-year review” I made no claim about high miles, but I hope to get there:)

    • @michaelmorley331
      @michaelmorley331 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree..that is not enough mileage to qualify as a 7 year review..
      Only one worse was a guy with 28 miles on a five year old harley.
