I don’t know much about Mason Bogies or semaphores… but the coyote barks, the morning mist, the trees, the whole look… yep, feels like home. You’ve got a very impressive amount of Pennsylvania flavor in the Keystone map already!
43:21 All three of us that are fans of the Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad might appreciate the 0-6-4 Mason Bogie as well... just a thought lol. Unlike the NPC engine, they got there by adding a drive axle to a 0-4-4 (going to smaller drivers) rather than by subtracting a trailing axle
hearing talk of drawings falling apart and being copied to salvage what was, and also having a last surviving, working engine someplace, makes this seem like archaeology, putting pieces in places trying to make sense of how dinosaurs worked or looked, except there's also a living dinosaur that some mad bastard has been taking care of in a shed for the last century somewhere that you can visit as well. really fascinating stuff.
Hearing you and the guys from Henry Ford talk about an engine I grew up seeing and riding behind at the village made my heart leap for joy! Hearing Torch Lake’s bell and whistle in the model also made me super excited, I can’t wait whenever the game comes out to get one of these bogies!
Such a shame none of the three foot gauge locomotives were preserved. Love to see them well represented in Century of Steam. I hope we get to see some more modernized Masons in the future. I do hope the 4 wheel trailing truck gets added. I know it may seem insignificant, but it adds so much character to the locomotive as a whole. At least in my opinion. If my Mason ends in the dirt backwards, I would absolutely swap out trucks under reasoning of the original truck getting shattered by the accident. I get the modeling team is rather busy ATM, so I understand if it isn’t feasible. Just remember, the effort will be appreciated.
I'll be sure to have "Paint it black" by the rolling stones playing when I'm customizing my locomotives, some people get tired of black locomotives, I don't lmao
Oh man this was so cool! I remember you teasing something about it in a stream the other day and totally forgot until just before I saw the thumbnail. Well worth the hype, casually showing off a new locomotive, mechanic, and map all at once is awesome!
I can an agree compared to the two other operating locomotives at ford simply because torch was built for the sharp turns of the village. Edison (4-4-0) was built originally as a 0-4-0 and was rebuilt and gifted in it current state and wasn’t originally intended to operate. Former DT&I 7 (4-4-0) was Fords personal locomotive. To help navigate the turns the wheels were changed and it needs to slow down on the shaper curve in the back because of how tall it is.

Hyce you and the team just keep putting in the good work and we are beyond excited to see the final product. I think most rail enthusiast like myself are excited for your game because you guys care about the little things. The emotion and feel that goes into railroading and the attention to detail is ever present in COS, can't wait.
Really nice set of detail updates on this one. One little thing as a detail driven engineer myself... on the position lights, when they change aspects, ya gotta get the blink in there.... The what? When you turn the clear aspect off, there's a time delay for them to go dark, and there's also a time delay for the stop aspect to light. it's about a second total but for a very brief moment, they're both off. Now depending on what timeline you're looking at, the center bulb would turn off for the stop aspect, but for clear and approach, it would be on. (much later heads had 2 reds for stop while the others remained yellow, hence the name 'red eye' signals on standard gauge). I completely realize that's a nitpicky detail, but it's sorta the same thing with searchlight signals, they briefly flash black then to the color of choice and sometimes twice depending on how many aspects it has to go past to get to the desired roundel, and when stopping on red, sometimes they bounce if they're well enough maintained such that the friction is so low when the head is released it bobbles once or twice when it lands in the unpowered red state. This is the crap the keeps me up at night... Lol.
Kinda sad Ross Crain from Canada passed away before seeing what you guys did. He was a huge DSP&P G scale guy. Had a lot of equipment custom made. I am thrilled you are modelling all the DSP&P engines. I like the C&S and Id like to pretend with my game that they survived into the C&S period.
Excellent work Daniel. I’ll send pictures along of my pseudo Mason project in which I’m reimagining a Mason as if the rear truck was powered to make a Mallet.
As a PRR fan i do appretiate the little nods to the pennsy. Also just throwing it out there the PRR did run a narrow gauge line breifly. *cough* PRR 9624 *cough*
Another Mason Bogie line was the Peach Bottom Railway, Middle Division (north-end predessesor of the Std. Gauge Maryland and Pennsylvania.) among a hodgepoge of porters and baldwins they had one, a 0-6-6. Supposedly they hated it as being "rough riding" but I think their track may have been a trifle on the shaky side.

I thought the engines looked like an american single fairlie. Then you guys described its articulating abilities, it definitely sounds like a single fairlie. It wasn't a coincidence, a search on wikipedia says Mason was the american licensee of fairlie's patent
Yeah Mason built a Fairlie called "Janus" a big 0-6-6-0T engine for the Lehigh Valley, then began building his own Bogies after that. I know Mark has roasted the D&RG Mountaineer on his channel before, but I hope it makes it to the game someday too. The evolution of narrow gauge is early on owes a lot to Fairlie's engines, and without the Ffestiniog then William Palmer may have never begun the Rio Grande. Yes the Baldwin 2-8-0 won the Rio Grande early on, but there was a time as short as it was; where the vision for the Grande looked a lot like an American Ffestiniog full of Fairlies and two axle rolling stock! I'd love to see that as a "what could have been" or maybe at least learn why the Fairlie never stuck on the Grande by trying it hand's on in game.
Mountaineer might find a home in Ponderosa given the maps smaller size, which would minimize the design’s lack of capacity. The lack of any leading or trailing wheels made it a rather rough rider, and it just didn’t have the range to make sense on something like the Grande. The double firebox set up really didn’t endear it self to the crews either. I’d still be surprised if it was added to the game given its early demise, especially since the team has its hand full atm, but we will wait and see.
@@Stooltoad5017 realistically it would be best either on small maps, or as a helper like Mountaineer ended up being in its final years of service. Just a compact but powerful locomotive that can shove another train up a loaded grade and return to base without being turned around.

Thank you for letting me know that mason made 0-4-4 now I’m wondering if there will be one in the game ? If not completely understandable with how much amazing other locomotives there making but if there will be I will definitely have one
The more see of this game, the more I want it. Too bad it’s only going to be available for pc. I would have loved to play it on my iPad or Xbox. I guess I’ll have to save up for a computer.
BRO IT'S MY BRITHDAY AND I WENT TO THE HENRY FORD MUSEUM TODAY
Happy birthday! What a fun coincidence as well. :)
These locomotive's look pretty
hey mark, just wondering if there is any sort of timeframe for the games release
There is not
I love me some Mason Bogies
I wonder if frozen frogs will be implemented.
Haystacks.
How many takes do you usually have to scrap before you actually say Mark and not Hyce?
So, are you guys gonna make a 2-8-6t Mason Bogie?
Hell yeah
Are the signals customizable? I could spend hours doing so...
If you dont have ghosts in the cemeteries, I will be very disappointed 😆
