I mean, did you guys *really* expect no kabooms?
I knew it had to come eventually!
It had to come sometime
I would've been disappointed if there were no booms
It’s not a hyce game with no kabooms
I'm glad you added the "kaboom? Yes Rico, Kaboom"
"The town of Ponderosa is now gone"
After watching back the highlight reel of explosions here, Mrs. Brill had a great idea for you: You need a “Yes, Rico. Kaboom” Mode, where everything explosive will go off uncomfortably easily, and with randomly multiplied explosive force.
I will neither confirm nor deny that multiplying the explosive force by about 100 will yeet the loco off of ponderosa entirely and it is hilarious
The truck spinning like the outatime license plate from Back to the Future. That had me in hysterics.

You made a time machine....out of a steam train!?
I thought the exact same thing! Then I saw this comment
8:25 "Can I toss my whistle on your engine?" is not a euphemism I thought I'd ever hear.
Toss a whistle on your engine... 🎶
it happens all the time at meets
The sound design for everything in this game is just the best in the industry. You can’t find a train game with better sounds than this.
BOILER EXPLOSIONS?! Oh this is gonna be great!
Edit: Okay, those were absolutely insane lmao, but I have one major suggestion. I don’t know if it’ll be possible and I understand if it’s not, but I think it’d be hilarious for the in-game soundtrack to suddenly fade into the climax of Kenosha as the boiler starts to fail.
A big boom 💥
or at the very least on any "you died" screen that may be implemented
@AuraKnightTheLucario or right as the crown sheet goes dry a fast coris of Kenosha ques up before kaboom
Oh you locomotive murderers
Yes, that should absolutely be an option!
Having grown up with microsoft train simulator, this game looks like all of the things I could have ever wanted when I was a kid. What a difference 23 years makes in simulation tech!
0:20 Yes more whistles!
0:40 Beautiful ten wheeler
1:07 I love how much detail goes into modeling the whistles
4:31 that’s amazing.
8:18 I would definitely like to see a video of just all of the whistles.
19:40 That was intense and really neat to see simulated
Those whistle sounds are absolutely magnificent. The only complaint here is that it seems that they sort of "glitch" when they're pulled on quickly. Minor detail but other than that great work! I'd also love to see that whistle supercut.
One of those nagging oddities of the player... Bugs me too. We've been working on it.
No idea how the audio is simulated, but it might be possible to fix it with a smoothing function applied to the *input* itself (the number attached to how far the cord is pulled) that kicks in hardest when the input variable varies relatively little. A sort of hysteresis on top of that might also help. @@Hyce777
@@Hyce777 Came looking for exactly this comment, I love following this, great stuff
“KABOOOM” -Demoman
The New York Central did indeed have air horns on some of their steamers, so as cursed as it is, there is a precedent for it!
I believe the Milwaukee Road had air horns for their streamliners as well.
Duplex has entered the chat
The SP Daylights had some too. At least in the models I’ve seen (both in games and in my live steam hobby) they have a pair near the front under the smokebox.
the PRR S1 did too I think.
@@pinnedthrottle7690the real daylight has a single chime Leslie A200
28:28 that truck is break-dancing hard 🕺🕺
I cannot express, in any possible way, how happy this makes me. Please let us turn on the "You Died" screen if you're standing too close. It's all I've ever asked for.
Is it bad that I want a little stuffed animal of the goat in the thumbnail? Nah, it cant be...can it?
Ha ha, Rocky is the game's main mascot, so who knows what they might do if the game is successful. 🙂
Rumour has it that there's a revenue stream in career mode inspired by the "crash at crush".
You'll be down two locos, but at least the traffic increased, and you put on a great show (for those who weren't injured).
Well I’m from Victoria and I was so happy to hear a whistle from my state
Having grown up in Truckee and now going to school in Golden I really appreciate that you guys avoided making the Sierras look like the Rockies so many maps of donner pass and lake tahoe just look like colorado with big lakes ignoring the sagebrush flats and long valleys that are so common in the siarras.
Several team members live in the sierras, they have been providing in-person reference for everything from tahoe to donner and martis valley
Indeed. I grew up in Reno but we spent a lot of time in the great back yard that is the Tahoe/Sierra foothill area's. They've really captured what the area actually looks like.

This wreck in which you are responsible for cost the lives of 20 people riding on the train when you blew up the boiler on a bridge. The wreck also cost about 2 million dollars in damages to the train and bridge .

Don't know about the US, but in a lot of UK locos, there are stripes behind the sight glasses; The refraction of the water makes the stripes go the opposite way behind areas with water making it easier to see. Might be hard to program that in.
It's pretty much just a change in the texture on the sight glass but we did not have those here in the US. Stripes in the sight glass were also prevalent on mainland Europe locos.
Hearing the Victorian rial 5-chime modelled digitally, in a game, and by Hyce... This is unreal. Childhood fantasy becoming reality. Mark, thank you for including this. You'll never know how special this is to us Victorians!
Its just a whistle
"There was a kaboom! An earth shattering kaboom!"
I love that you died screen with DRGW font. So looking forward to this game.
I can no longer make the 20+ hour flights to CO to enjoy the real 3 footers and am just hoping i get some time to enjoy this. Looks beautiful, sounds stunning just need to get hands on it 😂
I think what could be fun, albeit not too sure how much in the realm of possibility this is, would to get KaN on to help showcase the multiplayer running of trains, given how Mark and KaN have a history of playing train games together
19:20 wait whats it doing now, why is it making that so- HOLY S**T THAT ENGINE WENT FLYING
i just made the conclusion that unhealthy trains are scary (in more ways than a boiler explosion)
btw what is the player supposed to do with all the broken vehicle bits once it has blown up?
@@sockenbullegamingI'd guess something like what railroader does, where on easier difficulty you have an imaginary winch to get everything back to the track, then get a helper engine to pull it back to the shop for repairs, while on harder difficulty you might need to bring some sort of crane over and an empty flat to put the busted loco on.
Hard to say cause boiler explosions, like he said, are going to be only on the hardest difficulty.
So I will say it's not exaggerated at all. That is very much what happened in many of the boiler explosions in the book Train Wrecks I have. There was an explosion where the boiler flew for 2 miles onto someone's backyard. Again, not unheard of.
I think they're referring to how these smaller narrow gauge engines aren't under as much boiler pressure
Big engines would be like this, the small engines, probably not quite as much. Definitely a violent event.
I think it was during a Kan/Hyce Railroads Online video a long time ago, but Hyce casually mentioned that (And I forget which railroad it was, though it may have been D&RGW standard gauge) the tail end crew in the caboose were just chilling, a mile or so back from the head end, when suddenly the train went into emergency, and came to a screeching halt. Now this was before radios, so the tail end crew walked up to the head end to see what happened, only to find the wheelset of the locomotive, with the boiler a couple hundred feet away, the cab and crew completely missing, and the rails under the loco's wheels bent downwards. Apparently, the boiler exploded at the rear, causing the entire boiler to flip forward, tearing right off the cylinder saddle, and wrecking the cab, with the actual explosion being powerful enough that it pushed the wheelset into the rails with enough force to bend them downward. Because apparently, they were far enough back that they didn't hear their head end go boom. There's a reason that after 1908ish steam locomotives were no longer allowed to operate within New York City limits.
@@Hyce777 little engines could generate some big bangs though, though to do their worst they needed a little help. CIP, a boiler explosion on a vertical-boiler contractor's locomotive at Waiareka Junction near Oamaru (NZ) on 22 May 1876 where the crew had tied down the safety valve in an attempt to get more boiler pressure. While I'm not sure what the normal operating pressure was, or what pressure it got up to before Kenosha, the aftermath blew pieces of boiler nearly 100 meters away from the remains of the engine and launched the body of the contractor's clerk nearly ten meters into the air. For a small engine, that's pretty impressive in a macabre way...
@@alastaircross4713 yowza. That's impressive. What I'm figuring is we leave the boiler explosions as they are, and scale from the other ones
The moment this game comes out, I’M FUCKING BUYING IT
The explosions caught me so off guard even though I knew they were coming. Sure they might not be realistic but it's _way_ more fun this way! Also the waffling on and getting distracted by the details to make the cars explode felt like a legitimate Hyce moment. I assume Mark was acting in order to show off the explosion, but it felt super smooth.
In the world of incongruent sounds, I found an LP a while back with period recordings of NYC locomotives, including one of an S-1b Niagara barrelling at high speed towards the recorder with the westbound Mohawk near Buffalo - then the single-note WABCO E-2 speaks!
I really like the massive amount of work you guys put in to this game! I can't wait to play it someday! Maybe in the extreme long run you could add a German hoot or 2 on the whistle list? Those are very special for me because my first time hearing a whistle was one of those. I've got a few videos with the whistle playing, so if you guys want to try it someday (when you have the time of course), I would be happy to send those over!
You guys have gone really far with this game and hopefully there’s a video about release expectations and a video on Shay locomotives
For whistles I hope that the L&N 3 chime or 5 chime and possibly the "Satan's Wail" whistle from the Casey Jones show will be in game at some point. I've loved how far the game and Hyasynth has come.
I hope we all can enjoy it whenever you and your team release it.

"You can run on some pretty cursed railroads."
I swear, I could hear a "...kAN" at the end of that.
I love how you can hear the different whistle pitches echoing at different times.
I love the VR whistle! I hear it regularly living close to Steamrail's depot, even just yesterday. It sounds very familiar!
The VR 5 chime might be prototypical. The VR NA class of Narrow Gauge engine was a narrow gauge Baldwin designed tank engine and it's design is very simular to other tank engines you already have. The apple green lining of the pre-1906 engines is my favorite. A bunch of the locomotives service today as the Puffing Billy Railway from Belgrave to Gembrook.
I’d love to see a second rendition on the VR 5 chime, they tend to be a lot more throaty, a love addition nonetheless
Looking absolutely amazing. Loving ALL the technical details.
Can't wait for this game Hyce, this is my most anticipated RR game to add to my collection.
G'day from Australia! I'm very excited to hear a VR five chime being added, it has made my day!
I would 1000% love a supercut of all whistles. hope the whistle from Petticoat Junction is in game if not there's a good TH-cam video of it as a reproduction of the whistle used on the show
Of all the things I expected from this channel, a Madagascar Xmas short reference was not one of them
As far as whistles go, I'd love to see a supercut. I was also wondering if there was a chance we'll hear the 6-chime the 489 wore thru the 90s. It was always my favorite whistle to hear while I was still living in Chama.
Tweetsie’s whistle! That’s so awesome! I live near to the railroad and grew up going on rides all the time. It’s amazing the care you guys put into this game!
Listening to you talk about timbre makes me realise this game is in good hands. Attention to these kinds of details are so lacking in games these days! Really appreciate the level of passion going into this project, looking forward to the release!
This is going to be off the charts when you get this out into the market. Great work from you guys.
Love it! Dang excited for this game! Love the steam realism aspects you don't see in any of the current railroad games.
Where's the Earth-Shattering Ka- oh there it is 😂
Loving the progress!!
Clicked for deer guy on the thumbnail, stayed for trains.
Please keep the 'YOU DIED' screen and the little sting that plays, I laughed so hard hahaha great update
DID SOMEBODY SAY BOOM 😃💥
Nice !! I'm really looking forward to seeing this being released.. Thank You for the updates.
LOVE the explosion sound design, very cool
Seriously, with every update, y'all continue to impress.surprise me. I cannot wait for this to be out.
"You Died" in Grande font is perfect. ❤
I LOVE the deep-sounding three chime whistles. It just makes the loco sound both beautiful and intimidating at the same time
The smile on my face when I heard the Princeton 3… Y’all are doing Gods work
As a Tweetsie fan, that Baldwin 3 chime makes me so happy
God that Boiler failing aound is absolutely horrifying.
Oh man, this is going to be very exciting when the game comes out soon. Especially with those explosions and causing chaos. Amazing work as always guys 🔥
This is going to be the best train sim ever keep up the amazing work.
If you have a whistle from Australia you could also do one from New Zealand, like the whistle found on the NZR Ka classes.
WOOO VR 5 CHIME!!! Sounds great, I heard one in-person just yesterday on a K class!
A whistle I'd suggest (if not yet added) would be a South African Railways 3 chime.
Absolutely stunning
Lovely looking game, cant wait!
"Honey, I blew up the choo-choo"
How about the cool whistle that you made be put in the game?
My only whistle Request is the N&W prototype Passenger 3 chimes, 475 has wore a replica of one once or twice, and the dimensions of them have been known for a long time.
Definitely should have the "you died" screen with that music cue in the game. 😊
the booms.might generally be bigger then irl but there has been an instance of a train car yeeting itself three quarters of a mile so it's not to insane
I assume there's been some very enjoyable inspiration from Derail Valley. Those explosions are really rad. I'm certain nobody will try to compete to get the largest, most spectacular kabooms once CoS is released.
This game never ceases to amaze and mesmerize with just how good and detailed it is.
That handsome buck in the thumbnail is enough for my like, def going to sub.
Great ES&D moment!
I was hoping the boom would damage the bridge, creating interesting “Bridge is out situations”
"Derail Valley's explosions are too small. If you want something done right, do it yourself!"
Would love to see more CPR and CNR whistles. Great work!
I can’t not read the title in the Skipper voice
That one truck that flew up in the air and came down. Really wanted to break dance 😂
For extra effect start Smells like Kenosha at 16:24, 22:50 and at 24:56
Speaking of whistles, which whistle did you use in the ending scene of the game's trailer? The part that shows a 4-4-0 and advertising to wishlist on Steam. I would love to know the name of that whistle used!
My best analogy for the sound is that after changes you felt the multiple levels simultaneously but before changes it felt like it was all sandwiched on 1 plain
I was wondering when we’d see the boiler explosions.
Ah man This is def. Looking like everything I want, youre the perfect person for it too.
The "You Died" screen in the speed lettering is amazing lmao
It's looking and sounding great. As for sound requests from the UK, the whistle of an A4 Pacific, Flying Scotsman. If you could add custom steam sound, it has to be the bark of a black 5.
Beautiful game design so far.
I mean, the big boom just makes clearing the tracks easier!
As soon as I heard Mark talking about the details in the game while he was reversing onto the boxcars, I knew EXACEXACTLY what was going to happen!
And yet the bridge remains!
CoS is going to have diesels? I thought it wasn't going to have any. I mean I'll take them but they should possibly be kept for after release so scope creep doesn't kill the project
They've planned this from the start, as you can see diesels in the trailer.
The intention is throughout the whole game to show realistic railroading, and so to do that for the last decades of the game in the transition era, you need to have diesels.
They’ve been public since the trailer.
I watched the train explosion 10 times. Chef’s kiss
Amazing
Random question for the team, would it be possible to put hya-synth technology on a phone app? As someone with a lot of older o gauge trains, a lot of them don’t have any sound other than the buzzing of a motor or e-unit and someone on TH-cam once mentioned putting a Bluetooth speaker in a boxcar or the cab of a locomotive. The app he uses to play the whistle, bell, etc. doesn’t exist on apple phones so I thought if your tech could be put on a phone app, then foamers like me could mount a speaker in our models and have a whole library of different whistles to help our little toys feel a little more real, and a little more like us, and if an artificial echo can be squeezed in then those modeling mountainous territory would would be slapped in the face with realism. Sorry if this comment sounds stupid 😅
To be fair, a good few Souther Pacific steamers have/had horns, along with things like the S1 on the Pennsy, so it's not as cursed as you might think. And then you have the flips side, where at least 1 British diesel switcher (forget which though) had an air whistle, because why the hell not.
Hi Hyce. From Australia. The South Australian 520 and the RX class loco and the 620 class have some nice whistles.
The 620 at least, sounds like a
moose being castrated with a rusty bread and butter knife. They were abysmal. SAR whistles in general are nothing to write home about ( and I am from Adelaide) Do however like the ones fitted to the Puffing Billy NA tanks in Vic or the chime on the NSW 60 Garrett.
You should be making DCC sound files for model locomotives Mark. Everyone would buy that up, and I would kill to have a Crosby 3 chime (pre-war LNER Crosbys too) with Hya-synth quality timbre, without having to layer tons of recordings! And yes, kaboom!
Oh man!!! this fantastic!!! I do hope we will get M.O.W equipment!!! Imagine the shenanigans one could get up to with a steam crane!!! ;)
I fully expect the player character to get launched across the map if they happen to be in the cab at the moment of a boiler explosion a-la hitting the map border in ATV Offroad Fury 2. 😁
