    This is a master class in de-escalation and properly handling someone in a mental health crisis. The judge is a hero for handling this in the way she did.

      The judge is doing a masterful job, no doubt. But I don’t see a mental health crisis. At least not the crisis he’s claiming. I see a calculated manipulator, likely a covert narcissist/victim narcissist. People like him can certainly have a breakdown when they’re unable to get their way and face actual consequences. But this isn’t what he wants us to think it is

    At 1:16 into the video. Retired mental health crisis worker here, watching spun me right back into it. Risk and Impressions: Doesn’t want to die, knows all the therapy trigger words, probably highly skilled at manipulating therapists, after years of practice. Risk high for accidental suicidal, more likely to try an attempt and mentally foggy enough to misjudge time to be rescued. Highly intelligent, enough to be able to shade his statements to his desired emotion. Working hard to manage initial mania, rate of speech and ideas flow very fast at times. He said “I will do anything to avoid jail, anything.” And then does almost every form of emotional manipulation, with an expansive vocabulary. Glad the judge is engaging him while having help search for him. Definitely candidate for involuntary commitment evaluation. His ability to deploy manipulative techniques doesn’t negate his need for help. Agreed, not the judge’s call to make (end of video 1 comment). Also good to see your compassionate side, even while the guy is irritating af, and don’t know how much is just symptoms. And his dry sarcasm is not unusual for a mental health break for his personality type. I am shy, been watching for years, never felt any need to comment before. But this guy… And yes I remember his first flirtatious video, couldn’t tell if he was high, ill, off meds, stressed beyond his ability to cope, but red flags were all waving in his whirlwind. Now on to the second half. Thank you.

    I work for a drug court program and had a similar situation years ago with a client who was suicidal, paranoid and agitated. I had been working with him for about 6 months and he was stable, did not even report any mental health concerns to us, He took a very fast turn, also reported he had a gun. Fortunately he called from a land line at his apartment and we had caller ID. The EMS and police got there pretty fast, didn't need a warrant beause it was handled as a medical emergency. Even that relatively brief call of 25-30 minutes was exhausting. Judge Santos had a real marathon and managed to keep cool throughout. Amazing work!
    My client went to a mental health court program but never fully stabilized. He ended up in prison and since release has had multiple run-ins with the law. There has got to be a better way to help people with mental health struggles!

      Idk. I feel like a year was shaved off of mine just for listening to this blowhard for so long.
      He’s manipulative. Says he’ll do “anything to stay out of jail” but breaks all the conditions to do just that. Makes demands about what he will and will not do. Has broken the law in multiple states. Whines about his “wife” but only talks about his CHILD in passing. Was condescending to his own attorney to the point that the attorney just flat out stopped trying bc nothing he was gonna say to this dude would be correct or helpful in his own delusional world. He won’t wear a tether, which would keep him out of jail, bc it “hurts his ankle” and would ruin his planned out of state camping trip/spiritual journey.

      @PneumaNoose 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Exactly. I work with prisoners and if the system led with compassion instead of shame, we could change this country (and this doesn’t mean forgetting punishment). If judges, POs, and COs were more compassionate as they upheld the law, people would more inclined to change. Have you ever tried to convince someone to do something whilst insulting them? It never works. But if you relate and empathize with them, you’re much more likely to convince them to do what you’re asking. All we want as humans is to be heard, understood, and accepted. The behavior studies we do tells us that shame is essentially the poison of society, and in the years I’ve worked with murderers and the like, I believe it wholeheartedly. This man CAN be helped and I couldn’t love this judge more for doing so. Bravo!!!

    I was a mental health nurse. I’ve had to handle many calls from suicidal/homicidal people. It is so hard to keep them talking long enough to get help to them. It’s a hard call for law enforcement to know exactly how to get to them as safely as possible. When I handled one of these calls, there was an adrenaline rush that was almost overwhelming. Many times I would just go to a quiet room and cry. It’s a sad situation and you never know if you actually helped someone. Every life has a purpose. This brings back a flood emotions. When you mentioned his attorney remaining quiet, that was helpful because getting to many people trying to talk someone down creates an overwhelming situation. We always had one person who would try to talk someone down.

      I’m an RN as well, since 2005 and I have to disagree about the “unforeseen jail sentence”. He knew darn well that he’d go to jail if he was non-compliant with the court ordered drug testing and he refused to be placed on a tether which ALSO would’ve kept him out of jail.
      So there is nothing unforeseen about that.
      I do think he’s manipulative as all get out and I don’t believe he’s that scared of traumatized by his jail time. If so, he’d have done what he was supposed to do. He’s also broken laws in multiple states. This isn’t new to him.

    That was a ride. Kudos to the Judge for paying attention, hearing his need and sticking with such a difficult to keep going conversation whilst help was organised.

    I was actually gripping my hands during this hearing. As a nurse I care deeply about people and their emotional state. I pray he will get the help he needs. Really sad to have a mental illness or actually several in his case. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

    He acknowledges, the first step...engaging in mental health treatment is challenging, it requires a deep dive within introspection, believe it or not our egos often don't want us to go there, it's a painful process. Until we have a clear understanding of ourselves, seeking answers externally can simply create more chaos. Kudo's to Judge DiSanto and Shemke! And thanks for sharing this Mike...

      Nahh, he just wants to do his own DIY 'mental health' treatment and call it a day, or find a 'very special' counsellor (read 'someone who won't push back against my bullshit').

    This was fascinating, Mike. I’m so glad they found out where he was and got to him before he harmed himself or anyone else.
    I’m hoping they do a thorough mental health evaluation on him, and that whoever does that eval gets a heads up on what happened at this hearing. This man is intelligent and will change his story to fit what he perceives the circumstances to be…which may delay proper treatment if the evaluator doesn’t see through it.
    I don’t know what “Dickerson” is, whether they only handle misdemeanor defendants there? It saddens me that this man will be in Wayne County Jail, mixing in with much more hardened folks.
    I wish our judicial system and society in general handled mental health and substance abuse issues better. Jail doesn’t fix those, except in rare cases. I think we could reduce recidivism, costing taxpayers less in the long run. Many aren’t ready to accept the treatment they need, but we should make it available where it can make a difference.
    Not sure whether this man is bipolar, has schizophrenia, or what…but there’s more going on in there than simple manipulativeness IMO.
    Judge DiSanto is a hero 🙌💯🎉

      Dickerson is a facility that has 896 bed capacity (instead of the 3000 at most detention centers) and employs direct supervision ... which means:
      "Direct supervision jails focus on actively managing inmate behavior to produce a jail that is safe and secure for inmates, staff, and visitors. Staff interact continuously with inmates in the housing units, actively supervising them to identify problems in their early stages."
      So I imagine it's the safest place for him to be to also get help.

      I share your hopes and relief. His meta communication (not threats or statements but HOW he says unrelated innocuous things) says active self threat, wherein even 3 days is useful just for delay. At least in jail he gets the added benefit of any help at all, which is way more than a 72 hr hold.

    • @goosebump801
      @goosebump801 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wow, Dickerson sounds interesting. I’m curious about relative outcomes vs. other institutions with similar populations, and relative costs.
      And I agree about the “self-threat” meta-communication. I didn’t know how to put it into words, but he definitely seemed “off.” I just rewatched Mike’s 2-month-old video of his initial appearance. He looks and acts SO differently now. Still very self-important and (mostly) polite, but much less in touch with reality.
      Wishing him all the best 💐

      American prisons are horrible and inhumane. They won't fix mental health problems. If he ends up there again without proper treatment first they will have to have him on suicidewatch the whole time. It will break him. He needs a good therapist, not just medication.

    Two things. 1 - I'm grateful that the judge listened, as someone with similar chemistry I know how frustrating it can be for someone to never get a chance to talk and really be heard. It's very refreshing once it's all out.
    BUT....
    2 - he is gonna harbor so much resentment once he figures out she wasn't actually trying to listen she was just trying to hold him in one spot until they could get authorities there. I feel for the dude.
