This song was written primarily by Robin. Barry tells a story about when Robin showed up one day and told them that he had an idea for a song about this guy who was on his way to be executed. Barry and Maurice responded something my Ile 'What the ...' and Robin said no. That is was a love song. And it became a big hit for them. They continued to perform it for the rest of their career, and now Barry performs it with his son.

Massachusetts, New York Mining Disaster 1941, Lonely Days, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, I Started A Joke, To Love Somebody were all hit songs. They were HUGE in the 60's and early 70's before disco. Robin's voice was so recognizable as he sang lead much of the time. I prefer the pre-disco music.

Same here, I thought the 1960s and early 1970s hits were masterpiece Bee Gees. The Bee Gees had over ten top 20 hits pre-disco. Now that is amazing.

Robin and Maurice were only 18 in 1968. Barry would have been 21 so there were not a lot of hits earlier than 1968. One early hit was Massachusetts. Robin was the main writer of Message to You and he wrote several of their songs. Maurice also wrote a few the one I like is Man on the Middle.

Their songwriting was a little speciel. One of them, most Barry and Robin came up with an idea and took it with them into the studio and then all 3 of them would get into the writing and end up with a final song. This song was a Robin idea and when he came to the studio the others just looked at him and said "A song about a guy on deathrow waiting to be executed in an hour, that will never work".
Robin insisted and all 3 collaborated to get the song finished, therefore it is credited to all 3 brothers as writers eventhough it Robin's idea from the beginning. It ended being one of their biggest hits in the sixties

Robin came up with the idea for this song, when he went to Barry and Maurice with the idea of writing a song about a man going to the electric chair they didn't want to do it, but Robin said wait it's a love song, so they went on to write it, most of their songs were written by the three of them

  • @Heaven-im5kl

Robin wrote this song. All of them wrote songs not only for themselves but for other singers. They got their start at a very young age. Just little kids. Their dad Hugh Gibb was a drummer in a band and quit his job in order to take the boys to clubs and bars to sing. They helped support the family.

Thank you so much for loving their music!!! Song is about a man that is going to be executed. In the song, the prisoner is asking the prison chaplain to get a message to his wife. The man is being executed because he killed the man his wife was having an affair with. In a suttle lyric, "Well I did it to him, now it's my turn to die"....says why he is being executed. Robin was 19 yrs old when he wrote the lyrics.

The one on the left in white playing the bass is Maurice Gibb when he still had hair. The drummer is Colin Peterson and the guitarist is Vince Malony. Together they were the 60's BeeGees. After these two left, they had a different drummer Geoff Bridgford in the late sixties/early seventies. Barry wasn't really extremely tall, only just 6 ft flat, but his brothers were on the short side: Robin around 5'9.5", Maurice around 5'7" and Andy only 5'6". So, when around his brothers, Barry would look like a giant, but next to others he'd look average and his brothers looked tiny. Now Barry has lost a lot of height due to aging, back problems and surgeries and his Rheumatoid arthritis.

Robin and Barry wrote TOGETHER and @95% of their songs were written by BOTH. Barry mistakenly gets the credit as the sole composer. He was not. Mo also co-wrote @75% of their songs with Barry and Robin. The fans who "crush" on Barry, as you say, often ignore the massive contributions of the twins. Robin also wrote his own 2 early solo LP's entirely (Robin's Reign and Sing slowly Sisters) and his later solo LP's (Walls have eyes, Secret Agent, Magnet, How old are you and 20 St Catherine's Drive) alone or with Mo and had solo hits. He started writing at 14. Robin also sang many of the leads in the 60's (including writing their earliest hits like "Massachusetts", their 1st #1). He also sang many leads in the early 70's and in the 80's onward. Barry sang most of the disco leads. Although they had very different voices Barry and Robin often sang lead at the same time even in the disco era and you can't tell them apart...genetics!

A lot of their best music was in the pre-disco era. Massachusetts, I Started a Joke, To Love Somebody, How Do You Mend a Broken Heart, Run to Me, New York Mining Disaster 1941 and my all-time favorite Bee Gees song Words amongst them. The early group had other non-Gibb family members. By the mid-70s it was just the three brothers with session/touring musicians performing with them in the studio and on stage. That's Mo on the bass in this song BTW.

Lydmar - The songs written for Streisand, Kenny Rogers, Celine Dion, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick and others were written by ALL THREE. Unfortunately many people think it was only Barry. Most Bee Gees songs were written by Barry and Robin or by all three. The twins contributed just as much once they became teens. It's a shame that people don't realize that. Remember Barry was over 3 years older.

There's a serious story being told in this song. Did you hear it?
A prisoner on death row has ONE hour to live before execution. And he wants to get a last minute message to the one he loves.
Songs of love written by teenagers can be about the most serious subjects. Decades later, people just assume that really mature adults must have written them...but nope, this, and so many other great songs from this golden era of music, were written by teenagers. It just goes to show what people can accomplish if they set their minds to it and the musical standards of the age they live in are set high enough and they have to strive to meet that standard.
Pressure makes diamonds. And back then, if you didn't write and sing great songs, you didn't get on the radio, and you didn't sell records. And consequently you didn't make it in the music industry.
Professional music standards, expectations of quality, and hard work, that's part of what's missing in the music industry today.

You said "Correct me if I'm wrong". Actually you are, LOL. Barry was the early songwriter when they were kids because the twins were over 3 years younger. Most later songs were co written by Barry AND Robin and some by all three. One would bring an idea to the table and all three would perfect it. Robin wrote a lot of songs for his solo albums (which were very good IMO) and also quite a few with Maurice. The songs they wrote for Diana Ross, Celine Dion, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand and others were written by all three.

Their song that sounds the most like the Beatles, IMO, is Lonely Day. Also happens to be one of my favorites. Also, the drummer and guitar player were regular members of the Bee Gees band for many years. And I saw Barry (in an interview) say that their song-writing process was very collaborative among all 3 of them, and was also very spontaneous, often beginning to write the song on the very day that they came into the studio, almost "write as you go" type of process. Amazing. Try to watch the current HBO documentary movie about them called How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. Barry was involved in its production, but says that it's much to painful for him to watch.
