    WOW! Three kills in one... oozing! Terrifying.

    I'm not saying OD&D does this, but this episode is a perfect example of why I think XP for gold is such a nonsensical system for XP. If this particular adventure happened in one of those systems, none of the surving PC's would-be gotten any XP, as if nothing they experienced ever happened. It makes no sense to me.

      It tends to balance out over time in my experience. They do gain XP for defeating monsters as well as the scroll the found. Last time they delved they pretty easily found some treasure before leaving. I find this type of system is playing the long game. If you want XP every session, perhaps other methods would be better for your table.

      @@BanditsKeepActualPlay 100%! I tried gold for XP before and know it's not for me, and it's situations like this adventure that exemplify the reason I don't like it. Even if it does balance out over time, the fact that a group of adventures could do all the stuff those characters did but not get any XP b/c they didn't get any, or very minimal XP, just doesn't make sense in my brain.

    I wonder why anyone would be willing to sign up as a front liner in this fantasy world.

    Also, concerning the next steps for the poor Wolves. I wouldn't risk the hobgob lair. I think a nice tidy rumour would serve them better. They can do a bit of scouting if need be.
    And from a meta level, it could break up the gameplay a bit with a nice little mini-adventure. I personally really enjoyed the wizard tower romp a few weeks (months?) back.

      Cool, thanks, I do have a mini adventure planned - but not necessarily for the wolves.

      I don't know, the hobgoblin lair would probably go similar to the orc lair. Take some delves in, sleep people and steal their gold.

  • @2plus2isfive
    @2plus2isfive 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Also, I know you roll the treasure for the entire lair, but how do you distribute the loot when running a randomly generated dungeon?
    I am curious as I am running an AD&D appendix A random dungeon and I am unsure of how to distribute the lair loot.

    • @BanditsKeepActualPlay
      @BanditsKeepActualPlay  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I put the “main treasure” with the toughest monsters and distribute minor stuff to the wandering monsters. I have a fixed number of main monsters and the room the last of them is in gets the rest of the treasure hoard.

    • @2plus2isfive
      @2plus2isfive 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BanditsKeepActualPlay that seems logical. So when you rolled that scroll during the session it was randomly selected from the pool of lesser hoard items? A fair way to do it.
      Always run the risk of showering your PCs with either too much loot or being too "fair" and having them suffer because of it.

    • @andrewrockwell1282
      @andrewrockwell1282 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think its definitely more random in the solo game. I think if you are writing your own, look at the videos like "making an orc lair" that distributes things logically.

    Great video as always. Your gaming vision and poise is quite inspiring. However, I am still confused about the level of this dungeon. I don't have the boxed set stats for black puddings, but in AD&D those guys do not appear on the wandering monster charts until level 7 -- I guess because a black pudding has 10 HD in AD&D! I get that you let the chips fall where they may with regards to balancing, and it's your game, your rules, but I don't see how, if this were a gaming group, players would ever want to send their characters out of the inn over and over again to their death in this campaign. The only thing I can come up with to justify these visits to the abattoir is that the Wolves represent all those failed adventuring parties whose skeletal remains the actual PCs stumble upon as they creep--successfully because they are the proper level--through the dungeon. Your solo adventures are providing the back-story for when you roll "bones" on the dungeon dressing random tables! There, I feel much better about it now!

    • @BanditsKeepActualPlay
      @BanditsKeepActualPlay  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The dungeons are based on level 6 creatures - these groups are in way over their head. This is because they are following treasure maps and OD&D states a level 6 creature (which is the max level) guards these things (typically) this is way more deadly than my home game to be sure!

    Hi Daniel, I've binge watched each one of your solo videos since discovering your channel last week. I'm excited to start my own solo campaign soon! The main thing I don't quite understand is the encounters parties face during overland travel. With a mapper, it makes sense how these encounters--while not lethal on their own--can really sap resources and time. I find those encounters very exciting. For adventuring parties, however, overland encounters feel a little pointless. I don't think I've ever seen an episode where it truly impacted your party in a negative way, apart from delaying their trip back by a day or two, but even that doesn't seem to matter much in the long run. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this.

    • @BanditsKeepActualPlay
      @BanditsKeepActualPlay  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The encounters can lead to discovery of new lairs and can (though I don’t recall it happening) cause hardship to the party if they are not prepared. This happens less often now that the party has horses, but some of the 1st trips did see the party low on food etc. We haven’t seen it come up in a while (but we are about to) but the more time that goes by means the more likely a map will be sold off (less options) or the location will be cleared (wasted trip). You’ve got me thinking I should do a world update video - thanks!

    • @MrBtripoli
      @MrBtripoli 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BanditsKeepActualPlay Thanks for the quick response. Yeah, it makes sense that time away from town could lead to troubles with maps. And I understand the benefit of finding a lair. It still doesn't seem like there is much danger to overland travel. I don't think the party would need to fight to convey the danger either. It could be something as simple as monster encounters can result in loss of supplies. I'm spitballing here, but one could have three potential negative outcomes from an overland encounter: 1) The monsters/bandits take part of your treasure (after all, that could explain how treasure ends up in a lair + maybe there's a chance a lair will appear nearby); 2) You could drop food to decrease the likelihood of another encounter on a subsequent die roll. 3) If you are unable to rest because you are being chased, you forfeit your weary horses as they perished from exhaustion (and the chase ends, as the monsters busy themselves consuming the horses). Thoughts?

    I'm sorry. I have been reviewing your supplement and the 3LBB and I can't see where you are getting the Black Pudding as fighting as 4 HF.
    I was rewatching this video to get the hang of abstract combat so I could run my own mass combat, but I am a little lost.
    Cheers for your help!

      Which version of the supplement you are looking at will make a difference, the oozes etc have been something I’ve tweaked multiple times. As a general rule though, a creature attacks as 1 figure per HD, if they do “normal” damage I go with heavy foot, if they do more that normal I treat it as armored and if they do less damage I treat them as light (generally)

      I should say also, I get deep into the creation of the system on my podcast so that may help. I think though I will make a full video soon with a breakdown for those who prefer TH-cam

      @@BanditsKeepActualPlay I really appreciate these responses, thank you! I'm looking at the alpha version (231001).
      I was primarily confused on how you discerned the Black Pudding's "attack as" when it says "spec" in the supplement. What you said here definitely gives me a lot of insight as it seems to be a case by case basis. Though, how did you come to 4HF when it's HD is 10?
      Also, I have been following your podcast and really enjoy the discussions on the system, particularly the mummy discussion. I'm going back a relistening as now I am trying to implement the system. With that said, I would LOVE a discuss and break down of the system on TH-cam as well! Something about watching someone do something adds a lot to just hearing someone speak about it.
      Cheers again for the reply.

    Hi Daniel, quick question, I see your using the deck of many dungeons, when you play solo do you use monsters and treasure as what the cards say or do you use the contents table from OD&D? If i play solo
    B /X should i ignore the contents as to what the cards say and just use the dungeon stocking nethod in B/X for each room?

    • @BanditsKeepActualPlay

      I ignore the monsters and treasure on the cards. I have played in past where I use them as markers and roll monsters from BX - I would not use the treasure directly as it is way less than you should be finding in BX
