- Energy from residues is becoming an increasingly significant component in many countries’ pathways to net zero. Development of agriresidues for energy can satisfy sustainable development goals and be deployed at a variety of scales. The list of possible agriresidues is vast and varied but their utilisation for energy is not without challenge. Their seasonality, dispersed nature and high moisture content means that collection and densification is a prerequisite in mobilising the resource. There are many options for pretreatment and densification to improve their properties still further, some of which are considered in this talk, together with in-plant methods of dealing with inherent risk. A key requirement is to identify the best residue(s)/geographical location for sustainable exploitation to most economic markets, and these together with the associated GHGs are highly dependent on the scenario and are country-specific and resource specific. Use of agriresidues for bioenergy for 2030 and beyond will, no doubt depend on incentivisation and implementation of policies to increase their use. The effect of this is already being felt around the world.
