      if u mean Tokyo itself, it's not large at all. Now what we say Tokyo it refers to great Tokyo region. it's a megacity consists of several cities together. it's not one city so it doesn't count.

      @@desperadoshao9733 you couls say the same thing about any other city. No city in Europe comes close to Tokyo proper population of 13 million or even 9 million if you just count the 23 special wards. thats still bigger than NYC and Hong Kong.

      Even then, if you look at Japan from Earth in daytime, you might think a lot of the grey patches are mountains but no, that’s civilization. Everything. If the mountains weren’t there, Japan could be a theoretical megalopolis city state.

    I went to Tokyo last year. It definitely is huge and an amazing place to visit. The figure i had was 37 Million for the Metropolitan area. Not the Capital territory but the generally accepted urban area, regardless of political boundaries. The urban area is larger than the special wards, hence the figure of 37 Million.
    There isn't really anywhere else that quite compares to Tokyo in terms of the density in relation to the size. Everywhere you look in Tokyo is a dense urban environment, except parks. It is described as ten large cities rolled into one and that sounds about right to me.

      New York has more flattened land but in general they are houses that are at a considerable distance surrounded by trees which from the space for only grass to even so they are not compressed and it does not have a small Downtown like in Tokyo so it looks a lot concrete from the air in Tokyo due to its lack of space

    There are many regions in China that exceed 100 million all in the area the size of Tokyo, the difference is that these places are gradually being connected and densified. So I can imagine in a decade or so, Tokyo will be surpassed by at least 3 cities in China and they are in Shenzhen HongKong area, Shanghai area and Beijing. So watch this space. Oh and Seoul Korea isn't far behind either.

      @LinLinvy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree. like Japan, China's capital is also so large and it's almost overlapping with neighboring Tianjin. And I heard the Chinese govt planned to make them both as one city in the near future.

    • @zam023
      @zam023 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ofcourse they are. China always want to be the no.1 at everything. The downside is, would Shanghai be a liveable city. Congestion and pollution is already bad as it is. Tokyo evolved over time and Japan have a habit of keeping their cities clean so having a densly populated area doesn't cause them much, if any, problems. I doubt Shanghai could pull it off like Tokyo.

You showed two squares that were at the same zoom level but I had no idea where the actual cities were. That comparison made it look like they were all the same size.
    Also, you forgot to mention that although Tokyo may be bigger, Kansai is cooler ;)

      Thank you Daniel!
      I'm not working for a Japanese company, so that probably wouldn't be of much value. If I ever do, I will.

      Hey, thank you for your reply!
      Actually it's even more valuable to me, since I'd prefer working for a foreign company :)
      How did you get the relocation to Japan? Do you work with Japanese people? Did you have to perfect your Japanese?
      It's all very interesting to me since I'm planning on doing something similar.
      Thanks !~

      I see. I'm self employed and work for foreign clients, usually from Germany, with non-Japanese people. My wife is Japanese and after living in Germany with me for some time, we decided we should live in Japan for a bit too. And I still have to perfect my Japanese ;)

    I live in ireland which if you don't know, is a western european island with an incredibly rich history and culture
    All the same, japan just seems like such a clean, polite and advanced place
    Going there would be like stepping into a ridge racer game from something like mud runner lol

    Wow, I never been to Tokyo so I cant imagine having to take a 100mph train to and from work and home like that, seems really interesting but very exhausting, especially considering that I don't speak Japanese so I feel like if I were to ask someone for directions or even vacation there I would get lost in a heartbeat SMH XD

    Informative video, but I would have to disagree with you saying that the surrounding prefectures are considered "Tokyo".
    The reason being that if you ask a Japanese national who is from Gunma, where their hometown is, they're not going to answer "Tokyo".
    Tokyo is Tokyo and all the other cities/prefectures are completely different.

    • @JapaneseJourney
      @JapaneseJourney  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's true. The national capital region however includes Gunma anyway.

    • @frostycreeper1055
      @frostycreeper1055 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      None of the other prefectures are considered "Tokyo" but they're still part of Tokyo's metropolitan area. The same way someone from New Jersey wouldn't say they come from New York, New Jersey is still part of the NY's metropolitan area anyway.
