The back road you took, from Chiang Mai up to the 1095, is my usual route when I ride from CM to Pai. It is more scenic, peaceful, and beautiful than the 107. Glad you discovered it. Have fun.
Glad to know you also discovered it. 107 has too much traffic, and the beginning of 1095 isn't that interesting either. I'm surprised the travel guides I see don't mention 3009 for how scenic it is.
