Been running my WalkSnail 1S off a 5V BEC direct, it's been happy - put at least 20 packs through the model.
That is great to know, I'll pin this to the comment section and others can see it. So, if you want to people, you can just use a 5V BEC! :D
@@Painless360 Draw has been measured at 2A at 4V and 1.8-1.9A at 5V so you want a 2.5A or 3A 5V BEC ideally. I've been getting solid results with 2.5A BEC which is also powering the FC. Published numbers are 4.5W which appear erroneous.
Does sound erroneous. If I get another 1S unit here I'll run some bench current draw checks with 5v and different power levels.. Happy flying!
@Dennis A, thanks. I am aware of the limit from the website (covered in the video) but running systems at higher voltages can affect the amount of heat generated and increase the need for cooling to avoid overheating, this is of particular concern here as this is already minus any heat-sinks from factory. Add to that, mine is installed in a small enclosed space with limited airflow so I've worked to keep the voltage to the
I like the way you did the voltage regulator on the balance plug - very clean.
Brilliant idea. I have flown my Drift extensively for sightseeing, using a 4K split camera, and it's amazing. It doesn't attract much attention, it can slow down ridiculously to admire bird's nests or whatever, and still speed up to beat a headwind when needed. It can fly forever on a 2 cell li-ion, and even if it decides to fall out of the sky, it's not likely to damage anyone's property. Unless it hits a house of cards or a particularly nasty Karen. Anything else will be fine.
Can you link me your camera mate or more info on setup
Hi Lee, who doesn't love the Drift, and now with walksnail installed it's almost perfect. Thanks again for the video and info on this build.
love my zohd drift and the rest of my zohd collection, it is a shame they haven't bought anything new out in a while.
looking forward to seeing your next video
Fantastic work, Lee! 😃
This system is really great! With the 1s VTX perhaps you have less range, but much less heat and headaches as well! It should be great even for 5" quads!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I set my Drift up with a HDZero Whoop lite VTX and a Nanocam V2, I installed my vtx in the same area but laying down horizontally behind the camera, works great, with the same antenna placement. I did have an accident where the battery flew forward and smashed my MIPI connector off the first VTX, expensive lesson, I glued a foam separator between them and I use Velcro on the battery now.
I put a Vista set up on my Drift, (all mounted on the battery hatch) a bit heavy for sure...But worked Fine !
Looks like a fun little flier. Might have to make one of these now. Thanks for another cool video!
I've been looking for an ecosystem for video that I like, and I think I have found it. I can't wait for my stuff to get here!
Now I need to order a Walksnail 1S VTX 😊. I just got the idea to change a light weight wing without FC from analog to digital. No waiting for the GPS, so powering up and switching "standby mode off" before take off.
Great easy to understand clip!
Wow! First! Shows you what you can do when you don't sleep! 🤣
Great idea, long time subbed. 👍
This is a brilliant idea!
Hi Lee, Great video on the 1s Walksnail Avatar. I really like the Walksnail system. Someday, I hope that I can find the HDZERO googles. Until then I was thinking about using the HDZERO module and use my SKYZONE googles. Thanks for the video and information about your build
exactly my idea of today :D Great video!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm going to put this on one of those 400mm Volantex war birds. I got the old version of the VTX with the heat sink from Amazon so I'm pretty disappointed with that since I really want the reduced weight of the 2nd version.
I added a heatsink back. It needs it IMHO
@@Painless360 Good to know! In the back of my mind I was wondering if it could be a blessing in disguise. Would you mind telling me why you think the V2 really needs a heatsink?
I think all HD systems that are run without lots of airflow benefit from additional cooling, see my builds..
@@Painless360 My VTX is on the outside of the plane in front of the cockpit. If I wanted to try to remove the heat shield, do you think it would be an easy task? I'm assuming I could just take a razor blade and pop it off? Also, if I wanted to put it back on, how would I go about that?
I've upgraded my good old eachine trashcan 2s whoop with walksnail, and I can tell that the VTX is running a bit hot on a 5v pad on the board. I'm sure nunning this little board at lower than 5v will reduce the heat.
I’ve been wondering how to add a 1s board to my new flex pirana and this should work great!
Thanks. This is exactly what I was waiting for ✈️ What is the flight distance?
The 1s board is designed for a small whoop with a few mins flight time. It also has lower max. power than the full units so range is less. But, it could get easily over a kilometer using just circular polarized antennas and about three times that by using patches on the goggles..
If you're running this as a stand alone camera on an airplane do you not connect the rx or tx leads and just connect the power? Does this cause binding issues?
You just need power as shown. Rx and Tx lines are for the OSD and detecting when an attached FC is ARMED for recording and power settings. Using the stuff shown in the video works great.
Thanks for the feedback! I found out it was a firmware update halting the bind process.
Hi, Thanks for all the knowledge! Im building a ZOHD Drift. Question, It is coming with ailerons joint by Y connector. Should I take that off and connect each wing to a different channel?
Using the Y cable is fine. I'd only split the ailerons if I wanted to setup flaperons, but this model doesn't need them. Happy flying
Thanks for the video Lee.
You mentioned that Caddx told you to remove the heatspreader from the chip. How did you do this?
Using the edge of a blade. It was only attached via a conductive paste. Why do you ask?
@Painless360 I received one of the 1S VTXes with a heatspreader on it and was looking to shed some weight as I plan to use in a micro quad, but I am a bit paranoid I will break it.
Is it same cable and conector for all walksnail? Thinking of putting a 1s board in the belly of the drift. So the 15 or even 20cm cable would be needed. (My analogue drift has the vtx there now and have the antenna sticking out under for best possible reception... With a bit of extra foam in front to protect it at landings)
Between the camera and AVATAR unit? It looks like it. Happy flying
Could you power the walksnail from the speed controller bec?
I love these little fpv planes. The atom rc flying fish is great. No need for a flight controller.
Possibly, you need a spare couple of amps to run it from what others are saying in the comments... Best of luck
The 2S BetaFPV Meteor 85 HD powers the Walksnail TX from a 5V line on the FC without any issues. Also where did you get the grommets you used to mount the TX? I can't find any small enough.
They came in the packet with mine.
I almost bought one of these. I still might
You'll get much more for your money if you buy Atomrc. Compare yourself
@Drone Pilot 260 RC (Jason), these seem to be 'marmite' style models and hard to find now so hang on for the 'modern' review I will be doing soon. They are hard to find now too so I'll be asking for alternatives in the video as well...
If in the US, racedayquads has them. Bought 2 spares myself already. Will be flying the drift model for a long time!
hello, i bought a zohd drift black and would like to fly with 3s 3 blade propeller 3x5x3, which direction of rotation, seen from behind, does the propeller have to run, to the right (clockwise) or to the left and which side to mount the propeller, the sign to the engine or away from the engine?
Greetings Hermann
The prop will be designed to produce thrust one way only. So, mount it like that. See th-cam.com/video/chlWYRl4TAU/w-d-xo.html
@@Painless360 thank you, I find it with your video.☺️👍
The Walksnail 1s is good to 13v, should be fine on 3s.
Not when this video was made, it wasn't ;)
how much ma is this thing using ? else I would suggest using a linear regulator like a lm317 .. I tend to NOT use switchmode buck boost converters when handling even digital transmitters.
Interesting, works lovely here. Why don't you prefer linear regulators?
What FC are you using in this? Any hope of it getting under 250g with walksnail?
I used it Kopilot lite in mine. Weight in the video... Happy flying
Can you do a show where you fly FPV both Quadcopters and then Fixed wing craft equipped with FPV and finally maybe VTOL where you are using FPV. I fly quads with FPV but also have fixed wing RC planes including a ducted fan jet and finally a VTOl fixed wing plane None of the planes are equipped with FPV and I would like to decide why FPV is a good experience e with fixed wing or VTOL. What is the difference and is FPV experience on RC aircraft something you would recommend. Do you use head trackers with FPV on planes why / why not? Thanks!
I fly over private land so find a local friendly farmer.
FPV is an amazing way to fly and almost everybody who I know tries it, loves it.
I do have head tracker setups but prefer to fly without... Happy flying
I don't know how the Walksnail 1s board could handle the ex. 5-5.2V directly from BEC or FC board. I wonder if it would be safe to power the 1S without the diode. I'm afraid to try it
Specs say 5v is fine. I can say it works great both ways shown. Happy flying
Can anyone help please? I have the 1s kit and am going to power it directly with a 1s lipo, but what do I do with the other 2 wires, the white and grey ones? Do I have to short them together? OR just ignore them?
I want to keep them as in the future I might add a flight controller but for now all I need is the black and red, very new to all this.
Great videos by the way, learn loads from your channel 🙂
If you are talking about the ones from the Walksnail unit, you can ignore them. They are for the telemetry from a flight controller and you're not using them. Secure them so they can't be shorted to anything and you're set!
@@Painless360 Will do, thanks for the quick reply. I'm going to cut that plug off and start soldering now.
I have a drift, and honestly it's not a great aircraft. Twitchy and thrust differential makes power on and power off trim very different. I bought the gyro GPS system but it never worked. I just use it as a light wind slope soarer and it's okay for that.
What a shame, always sad to hear when a pilot isn't having a great time with a model. This needs a well setup KoPilot and a calm day to really shine! Happy flying!
@@Painless360 The kopilot is unfortunately faulty, I just don't think it's a great model due to the motor angle and fragility so no aerobatics and I have flown many models. It's good for slope soaring though even in moderate winds.
I know so many who love the way it floats and flies in a calm sky. Just goes to show that one pilots dream model is another's idea of a nightmare. happy flying!
There are 4 drifts at our field and we all love them. Most people are putting batteries in that are too heavy that don’t like it. I’ve got caddx vista on mine and run 2 s 18650 liion cells. Perfect balance and flight time is amazing.
What diode did you use?
in4001 is what I used here but others are using it without and it is running great so it is optional! :D
Lee, went the same route as you with the 1S WS/Avatar and put a Matek405wmn arduplane in it. Much lighter then the dji vista I have in the other Drift. Here is a vid of it flying in some wind yesterday: th-cam.com/video/EVSRvL8h1Vw/w-d-xo.html
Glad to hear that this is becoming a 'normal' thing to do. It is such a cool way to bring HD to these small, lightweight models. Happy flying!
