    One thing I'll say about the relationship between Knives and Scott - almost every character he interacts with in the first half of the movie calls him out about how shitty and weird it is. The fact that he's constantly berated by the entire cast for his choice to go out with a high schooler made me feel like the movie was actually sharing in your opinion, that it's fucked up and he shouldn't be doing it.

      @@prs149 1. Not sure why there's parental consent involved. There is no legal statute for dating as far as I know.
      2. Scott could still be investigated for illegal sexual activity if he were reported to police. Canadian law is fickle about minors and sex in this area, albeit contentiously permissive in others. It's not only about age.
      3. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. 22yo with 17yo is usually predatory and exploitative. If there is no sex, however, then you're right in saying it's not illegal.
      ...that said: still gross.

He is just like you described, built to not be liked and seen to go through a redemption arc that isn't even finished by the end, but at least has begun. Edgar Wright was a genius taking this bonkers concept of a movie and making it happen visually. His style was so perfect for the style of a real life comic book. A lot of Americans get hung up on Knives being 17, therefore not just gross and unethical, but also illegal in the US. But the comic was written by a Canadian, takes place in Canada, where the age of consent is 16.
      So don't get me wrong, it's still gross, and people get bothered by it, even if Scott is mentally less mature than Knives.

    • @HiddenWindshield
      @HiddenWindshield ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@hellomark1 The age of consent in the US actually varies by state. In the vast majority of states, the age of consent is either 16 or 17, so it would be legal.
      The myth of "you must be 18 to do it" comes from three facts: (1) California (and therefore, Hollywood) is one of the few states where the age of consent actually is 18; (2) Hollywood movie writers aren't famous for doing a lot of research, so they just assume that the law is the same everywhere; and (3) far too many people assume that movies are more accurate than they actually are.

  • @Kai-fb1ol
    @Kai-fb1ol ปีที่แล้ว +74

    At the start Ramona was essentially treating Scott like Scott was treating Knives, ie. a safe, comfortable option who wouldn't break their heart like their previous relationship. Scott's total lack of game and forthrightness would probably seem endearing to Ramona after dating a manipulative narcissist like Gideon Graves.

    • @aitipsea3909

      Dont forget Gideon was the first real cretin that gave her a reality check, all the other ones were either flawed but still good until she dumped them (Matthew, Lucas, Todd) or straight up victims she used (Roxie, Kyle and Ken)
      Scott isnt a good person and Ramona isnt either, but together having to deal with eachother's past mistakes allows them to grow better as people, contrasted with the evil exes who allowed resentment and heart ache to turn them into the worst versions of themselves under Gideon's manipulations

    • @underAtack
      @underAtack 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Also, I think Angela's "yuck" about Scott dating a 17-year-old was based around her incorrectly assuming that it was romantic on his part, rather than it being merely a security blanket of being with someone.
      It's pretty clear from their interactions in the first 20 minutes or so of the movie that anytime she sparked romantic tension, he always got uncomfortable and deflected, like when she seemed ready to initiate during the ninja game, and he quickly drew her attention back to the screen, or when she brought up that she'd never even kissed a guy, which Scott sidestepped with a humorous "Me, neither"; you could actually tell when she surprised him with a kiss that he wanted to be anywhere else at that moment, and not just because Ramona was there.
      Plainly, he just wanted someone to talk to that could divert his focus from Envy having left him, and the fact that Knives was into him to an obsessive degree was probably an ersatz replacement for the self-respect that Envy clearly took away from him (I hate to lay blame, but the fact that she was still calling him after dumping him implies to me that she wanted him to keep pining for her). That's likely why he had such a hard time breaking up with her - not only did he not want to hurt her because she had become a friend who listened to him, he was probably also scared that breaking up with her would mean losing the crutch of having at least SOMEONE respect him, so that he didn't have to try to figure out how to get back to respecting himself.
      I know that it's been a year since this reaction, but I'd like Angela to watch this movie again looking for any indicators that Scott wanted anything from Knives beyond being a friend to hang out with him, listen to his music and play video games with him.

    What's refreshing about this movie is that's it's filmed AND set in Toronto. The city is rarely portrayed as itself in movies, and I love that they poke fun at that during the fight with Lucas Lee, when the Empire State Building in the NYC backdrop gets ripped down to reveal the CN Tower.
    My favourite fight scene has got to be Scott vs Todd. The ridiculous nature is turned up to 11. My SO and I still find ourselves saying "It's milk and eggs, bitch" all the time. The fact that it's delivered by none other than detective Josephus Miller is just icing on the cake.

The comic mixed the video game’y fantastical bits in part to show that Scott sees himself as some sort of protagonist hero. And the comic _is_ about him, so partly true - but it doesn’t really hold much water since he’s really just short-sighted, self-absorbed and immature.

It’s not a good attitude to have at any age. However it is fair to say it’s an attitude that often affects the young. However it is something that doesn’t always remain there.

    You were right about how Scott's not supposed to be likable at the beginning. He's not the kind of hero we're supposed to root for the entire movie. He's supposed to "level up" in terms of maturity as the movie progresses. As Ramona says, we all have baggage, and Scott's real mission throughout the movie is to become the kind of person we might actually like at the end. The original ending had him getting back together with Knives, but I think that would have been terrible. He and Ramona having another try now that they've dealt with their baggage is a much better ending. It doesn't say they end up happily ever after, just that they give it another try. (A lot of these themes are a lot more evident in the graphic novels.)

  • @vellynis
    @vellynis ปีที่แล้ว +78

    Yeah, you're not supposed to like Scott through most of the movie because he's a terrible person. Something I see a lot of people miss when they watch this is that Nega Scott is actually a really nice guy, because he's supposed to be the inverse of Scott.

    • @no1guy825

      But Scott is acting the exact same way to him. They're indistinguishable. In the comics, Nega Scott is supposed to be the culmination of all of Scott's old sins, and regular Scott is supposed to completely recognize this because he's a changed man somewhat. In this, Nega Scott is a fun joke for a few reasons but there's no "identity of goodness" to be picked out in him.

    No laws on Ceres, only vegan cops.
    So, if one is so inclined, one can read the story as Scott, like any new boyfriend, being compared (or comparing himself) to Ramona’s exes and having to be better than them, metaphorically defeating them. Of course, the main obstacle is the fact that he’s not really better just a dirtbag. At least until he grows up. A little. At the very end.
    Incidentally, Ramona skating through Scott’s desert dreamscape was this weird early 2000s joke from the cartoonist about Americans having cool stuff that’s not available in Canada - such as access to a “subspace shortcut” that happens to go through Scott’s head 🤷‍♂
    By the way, Michael Cera did a nice joke at a cast panel for the film: Since one of the cast members had just been cast as Captain America, Cera showed up in a muscle costume, pretending it was him.

    • @ferchrissakes
      @ferchrissakes ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The song that Brie’s band performs is actually “Black Sheep” by Metric - a Canadian band, of course. Everything about the original comic was very much about Toronto’s indie scene in the early 2000s, so while it updated things a little for the movie, it is indeed very much of its time. And Beck composed Scott’s “Ramona” song for some reason.
      As for Routh, don’t forget that he played Superman. Lots of comic book movie people in this one, but since this was before Evans became Cap, it was a fun sort of meta joke to have Routh with superpowers in another movie.
      Still, Wallace does steal the show at every turn.

You pick up amazing details, like that the number of the ex that Scott is about to fight is shown somewhere, like in the background or on their shirt, or that the letter "x" is shown on signs, or even in street crossings. The first time watching, you're not sure why Scott is so poor with his emotional choices when it comes to women, until you learn about Envy and his relationship with her, and how it messed Scott up. This is about his emotional growth after being hurt by Envy, and him learning to not only value himself, but the other people in his life.

    This movie was so ahead of its time. I can't believe it's practically 13 years old. It presented pretty progressive views on relationships, queer friendly humour and self-reflection for it being 2010. Discussions around this stuff were just really starting to take off around this time period. Def one of those movies where you could really feel a generational culture shift emerging.

    I adore this film and the original graphic novels. It's weird and wacky but in a way that just clicks for me, somehow. The comic book pop ups, the sound effects, the video-gamey-ness of it all. The weird transitions, cuts and time-jumps.
    What I wouldnt give to have Scott-Pilgrim-vision where I can just see things/have life happen like that.
    Edit: Also, Knives is adorable, definitely a bit of a crush back when I first saw this in my teens.

    This is one of my favorite movies ever. I particularly love the fights and the sheer number of cameos. Especially with how many of them have either been in Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, or DC. My other favorite parts that will make me laugh out loud every time is when Scott dives out the window and when Roxy calls Ramona "has-bian". Also, yes that was Brie Larson singing an actual song titled "Black Sheep" by the Toronto band "Metric". She recorded a cover version with the actual band as the instrumentalists, for the soundtrack. I don't know that Brandon Routh can play the bass, but as a bass player myself I can say that whoever's hands they recorded very likely was.

    The movie is about if you don't deal with you past you will carry you past with you to your next relationship and they will have to deal with it. She is a runner and he lost his self worth. Scott had to deal with Ramona's past in her 7 evil exs. Ramona had to deal with Scott's past through his lack of confidence and insecurity. In the end Scott still isn't done with Nega Scott but at least he started addressing the issue. Ramona is still quick to leave but is willing to stick around with Scott a little longer.

    As others have said, Scott really isn’t meant to be the best guy at the start; he’s superficially nice, but he’s really a Nice Guy(TM) who needs to learn and get better as a result of all this to become a better person. In that way the story is ahead of its time, although the Manic Pixie Dream Girl elements to Ramona were sadly played pretty straight; granted, she’s shown to be temperamental and not the best person either, but the comic (which did more still) didn’t quite reinvent the wheel there either.
    As far as adaptations go, despite cramming a six-book graphic novel into a two hour film (and thus cutting a LOT of the content, including the great character arcs of everyone not named Scott) it captures the spirit of the original story pretty well. Which I haven’t felt about some other adaptation films of works that other people do like yet I can’t see the appeal (generally not feeling like they got the point in those cases), so it’s a win there. And having Edgar Wright was perfect for translating this to live action, as very few people alive could have done that and not screwed it up.

    Yeah I think the fact that this started as a comic series with very chibi-anime-manga-esque character designs helped to endear you to Scott a lot more. It’s part I think of what was so groundbreaking in the book. It defied your expectations of what a typical hero protagonist should be like. Maybe the author just did that a bit too well for those who aren’t familiar with all the tropes lol. I definitely recommend the books if you haven’t read them

    The Scott Pilgrim movie did an amazing job at adapting the comics into a 90 minute movie. Alot from the comics gets left out but it still works thanks to Edgar Wright's directing. The videogame is also an amazing tribute to old SNES era games, the whole series just screams nostalgia. The anime that got announced from Netflix is combining everything and it's something to be excited for. The anime is being voiced by the film cast, it's overseen by Edgar Wright and Bryan Lee O'Malley (the writer of the comics) and it'll have music by Anamanaguchi (the band that made the music for the game).
    I found your channel thanks to this reaction, don't know if you do reactions to shows but if the Scott Pilgrim anime is anything like the comics it'll be worth the watch!

When she was younger she really loved the fights and thought Scott was cool. Later she realized Ramona used to date a girl and we had a short talk about same sex relationships. Later still we talked about Wallace being gay, and how Scott wasn't actually a good guy. So many helpful discussions were enabled by this movie. Weird I know but at least I've got a daughter who will actually talk to me about stuff at 17. Woohoo! Parenting win by Edgar Wright movie

    Love this movie as I loved the graphic novels it’s based on, but also hated Scott, but then in this with Cera it’s hard to hate him because it’s Cera and he’s just so goofy, but the line Kim Pine says (Alison Pill’s character) “if your life had a face, I’d punch it!” just sums it up perfectly. Though all in all it’s a pretty wacky surrealist reality movie and graphic,novel which makes it fun.
