Melatonin and Autism: Did It Help Her Sleep Through the Night?

  • When Maggie, our eight year old with autism, was three she had a horrible time getting to sleep and staying asleep. She wasn't sleeping and neither was anyone else in the house. She would spend hours every night vocally stimming and jumping on her bed, which felt like she was literally bouncing off the walls. Her pediatrician recommended we try a small melatonin. This is what happened next.

Welcome to Someday I'll Sleep, formerly Coffee and Cupcakes! We post family vlogs daily, about our lives and because we have two daughters on the spectrum we post quite a bit about autism! You'll get glimpses of what's going on at the moment in our lives, usually in a little town in Michigan, or in the city that Paul works in and where we have about a million therapy sessions each week.
Paul and Cammie (the dad and mom at Coffee and Cupcakes) have 5 children. Sadie is 10, Maggie is 8, Patrick is 5, James is 3, and Tessie is now 2!

i don’t think discussing with a doctor is necessary in my opinion. cause your pediatrician isn’t going to be a expert on melatonin they just go off of what they are told to go off of and the info they know which you could find anywhere. we just used zarbees melatonin for 3+ with our daughter who has autism and she went from doing headstands and singing and crying to actually sleeping peacefully. which is such a relief because we have a new baby coming in 7 weeks

Thats great that it works! I agree, people should always consult their doctor when giving little kids over-the-counter things. Super informative video! 😊❤️️👍

That’s wonderful that you got advice from the docs and that it works so well for her!😊👍

We've used melatonin with my almost 5 year old grandson. He's hard to "turn off" at night. BUT we've also found an all natural product called Luna that works wonders! Just wanted to mention that for you. Yay for sleepy kiddos. It is a necessity for all of us to get good sleep. Great informative video too!

Super interesting! It is scary how many people give their kids over-the-counter things without consulting a doctor! I’m glad it worked for her! 💕❤️

Wouldn't be over the counter if it wasn't safe!

Ohhhh girl James takes it too and it works for him too, his ADHD doctor did recommended it if we need it. He always did pretty great with sleep but it takes him a while to fall asleep and especially on school nights we use it. We use Zarbees melatonin for children.

I will discuss this with my pediatrician. Our daughter sleeps really badly. I will discuss it, and see what happens. Our eldest sleeps really well.

I think I'll try this. I got a 4 year old asd , he's up until 4 am everyday now. He just kind of gradually went off his sleep schedule.
