  • @mrflithyslug9891
    @mrflithyslug9891 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +246

    Personally, I thought the incompetence of the Daidoji was on purpose. The agents talk down on the Yakuza so much when they're not very different
    Regarding Shishido's not killing Nishitani, it seemed pretty obvious to me that he was pyschologicly dependent on him, which happens a lot in abuse cases where the victim will still stay by their side and even deny abuse. (Could've been explored more, but I thought there were enough context clues.)

    • @Micstand4
      @Micstand4 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      The only reason the Daidoji put pressure on the orphanage is because of Kiryu breaking out to go save Hanawa. Even then it’s shown that while they’ve been given multiple chances to make due on their promise and kill his family, they give him a second chance. He decides to trust the faction because if they didn’t already assassinate everyone he loves, then he can be sure they will the next time he tries to pull something like that.
      Which leads to him spending the entirety of IW disagreeing with Date about how he should reconnect with his loved ones (albeit, he still follows). They are barely present in IW which is a big writing problem, but he remembers what will happen to everyone if he falls out of line again.

I think they just show a familiar angle across from the place where you do the tutorial fight, so I thought he was literally just hanging out basically a minute walk from New Serena.
      I felt extra stupid reading this comment because I realized I'd actually stood basically in the exact spot I thought that scene took place, because it's just like the outer wall of Shinjuku station and doesn't actually look like that alley. • @delk1299

      Aizawa was the consequence of the ''main'' villain of the game, his father. Who went above and beyond due to his terminal cancer to give his son everything
      But Aizawa himself rejects and resent this idea of getting his dream without working and earning it. Why do you think Kiryu tells Aizawa to work his way up the right way when he defeats him?
      Shishido is not ''just aizawa''. Shishido literally backtracks on one of his two main drives which is his utter hatred for Nishitani, and wants to go to the top only on the excuse of outing a traitor. About Akame points: I didn't have any shortage of them and by the end of the 4th chapter I was fully maxed out.There was not a single point in the entire playthrough where I had to purposefully grind them for upgrades. More so, I haven't completed even a half of the requests that you may get from town's folk. Substories and Coliseum give you enogh currency to be maxed out. Of course, you still have to complete those as well, but I doubt that you could call it a grind. And really there is no point in upgrading all of the abilities since then the game becomes a cakewalk even on the Agent difficulty. I guess we just had different experience with this aspect of the game, the system is indeed not perfect, however it is in no way as terrible as you make it sound like.

    In an interview it was proven that Gaiden was supposed to be part of Kiryu's story in 8 but it was so long that they had to scrap it to a smaller game. This game could've suffered from bad writing solely because it wasn't the priority.
    But now other question is how this game would even work in 8? Considering they made an entire Kiryu list section only to have the bucket list option, could suggest that they planned more. But... It feels like RGG shouldn't really be splitting their games in half as in 6 months they really did not make this game seem that good.

      sidestorys are essential (not counting fetch quests) but in infinite wealth alone there is dondoko island and sujimon battles, both of which have very generic characters and sujimon battles having the same face these 5 bosses of the big evil league thing that has been recycled for so long and the actual gamplay of both is simple monotonous grind, RGG should atleast make less side content which is more polished than a ton of slop which most people skip anyways.

    • @JosephJoeseph
      @JosephJoeseph 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      For sure, watching Infinite Wealth's trailers really made me feel like the game is just trying way too hard, and the whole reason the whackiness of the games was endearing in the first place was that it felt so earnest. I haven't played IF yet so I can't speak much on whether or not this feeling is right but in general more and more of the side content has been feeling like they're just doing it to satisfy the expectation that Yakuza games are silly, and it's progressively more difficult to stomach especially when I can see how much resources it's taking away from improving the presentation of the main story. The overly verbose nature of these games wouldn't get on my nerves if the long dialogue scenes had engaging direction. I was never annoyed by the long cutscenes of MGS because even though codec calls were the same cost-cutting boring way to present dialogue as the in-engine shot-reverse shot of LAD, they were much better balanced alongside real cutscenes with real direction and performances from characters that actually emoted properly because they weren't constrained to reused, cheap animations when they weren't just standing still. The codec was also way less jarring because the facial animations were still on point and it was properly framed in-universe for why it looks the way it does. But most importantly, there really were just way more actual cutscenes aside from MGS1, where it's easily excused by the fact that PS1 graphics wouldn't really let characters emote in cutscenes, so the 2D headshots of the codec served way more of a functional purpose. Of course more cutscenes would be expensive but if all that money wasn't spent on subpar side content that still ends up underbaked, it would serve the quality of these games immensely. And hell, if they focused on much less, but higher quality side content maybe we'd get some actually well-written side stories with their very own cutscenes again. Wouldn't that be something.

I loved Gaiden, especially coming from 6 being the last Kiryu game I played, which I thought was a horrible ending for Kiryu, both narratively and in terms of an overall game. For Gaiden, I thought the characters were great, combat was excellent, though a step down from the Judgment games, and the story it had to tell was sick, getting to see the dissolution from another perspective and how Kiryu was doing after 6. Though the Daidoji as a whole aren't great in terms of writing, and like you said, Nishitani felt a bit undercooked (I did really enjoy Shishido, myself). It's clear with this and your other Yakuza vids that you're really passionate about this series, and it's genuinely saddening that you'd consider Gaiden actively bad, especially when I'd probably put it in my top 5 games in the series. i liked gaiden because of it being a small/ straight to the point story compared to the rest of the series. however i think if it were attached as a DLC to lad8, id probably enjoy it more as it would be like kaito files but with (hopefully) some new side content. It would've been a neat way to hint towards a yakuza 9 with shishido making an appearance because it seems gaiden was written after lad8. i hope they make more gaiden games but with better campaign pacing as i didnt like doing side content during my main campaign.

    Yakuza 6 pretty much wrapped up Kiryu’s story. Bringing him back (as the main playable character in a game) was obviously going to be a soulless cash-grab. For that reason I never took it seriously, I think it can be fun but I had no real expectations of something great.

    It really is a shame that RGG couldn't let their cash cow go after 6. They didn't even wait one fucking game and just had to shove him into the main plot of 7. Couldn't even just make him an optional superboss or something. And he's practically the main character in 8 which completely shits all over the idea of having Ichiban take over the series.

    • @WebbedManiac

      Honestly I can see why they did that. 6 had a great emotional ending, but it wasn't a satisfying ending. Couple that with bad combat and none of Kiryu's friends (except Date and Akiyama) present for what was supposed to be his "final showdown"? It's no wonder they picked his story up again.
      And considering that apparently Kiryu's Gaiden story was originally meant for Infinite Wealth before they made it into a separate game, I'm glad that Gaiden exists. Because this being in Infinite Wealth would've completely taken the spotlight from Kasuga.

  • @GhostRentals
    @GhostRentals 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

    Just my thoughts.
    The entire rant about the grind feels like a non-complaint. You're claiming the existence of the grind is bad which I'm sure everyone can agree on, yet you intentionally ignore the even longer and far more tedious grinds from almost every other entry in the series. You're also ignoring how easy it is to get Akame points (map tasks, completion list, substories, leveling up the network), and framing multiple items as expensive despite the fact a couple of rounds in the coliseum in the mid game can buy you most things and a single round in the end game just breaks the economy completely. Whether or not you like the tasks and substories it's undeniable that the majority of them are lightning fast which makes the grind less tedious than how you portray it.
    There's also the fact that RGG have taken a more free approach in their skill trees which is objectively better than previous games. Individual skills can now be picked according to your preferences, entirely ignored, or you can choose to grind for every single one (like every other game ever made.) Simply dismissing the entire system over a tiny grind is so odd to me.
    Combat is something I half agree on. I like Gaiden a lot but its inconsistency makes it worse than even the middling combat systems in this series. As for the rest I'm iffy on what you say. Agent Style has quite a few sweeping kicks in its arsenal which combined with the multiple quicksteps and general speed of its regular attacks make for a style that can be used effectively without relying on extreme heat. I also think locking the strongest heat actions in the game behind extreme heat is not a bad move at all, the problem is that there are barely any regular heat actions beyond the few super situational moves or your basic ground and wall heat actions, things that shouldn't be treated as special but rather the bare minimum for heat moves.
    Also just get out of here with the whole "oh, I'm different, sorry for NOT liking your game dude! I'm not your average reviewer, I'm like doing my own thing man!" Having a different opinion is not impressive at all and if you want people to listen to and engage with you then the last thing you should do is go after every positive review and act like they're crazy for having an opinion that doesn't align with yours. What you add in the description about people being free to enjoy Gaiden won't matter because it's not as important as what you wrote down, voiced, and gave a pass to while editing. Dislike the game all you want, treat it as bad as a meteor striking the earth if you really had a bad time with it, but these were the parts I disagreed with and I don't care to spend another 40 minutes of my life watching this if I can expect to be passive aggressively talked down to just for having a good time with the game.

    I do agree
    The story of IW was laughable at some points. No really, I laughed when Kiryu explained how he got cancer as if he never had a smoking addiction.
    It says something when they had to bring in a straight man (Tomizawa) to ask the questions for us as to why the plot would get so messy at some points. I’m serious not even a minute later when Chitose was explaining her back story did I ask my tv set ‘well if she’s rich then why did her parents not give her money’ did Tomi ask Chitose the same question.
    The only reason I cried at the end of Gaiden and IW was not because of what was happening in the plot (because trust me it was a shitshow)- it was because Takaya Kuroda knows how to voice act.

    Kaito being incompetent for the protagonist's sake is especially egregious considering that a massive part of why his character was so fantastic in the Judgments is that he had so much agency. Side characters feeling like they exist for the protagonist and have absolutely nothing in their lives beside the player character is an issue with almost every video game and Yakuza couldn't really escape it until Judgment either which is why it's such a big deal that Kaito felt like a real person with an actual life and goals separate from the protagonist. He was a friend to Yagami and not his obedient servant inferior to him in every aspect, only existing to aid him and not doing anything on his own. He DID do lots of shit on his own, he was integral to Yagami's success and they were actually equals and partners. It felt like a real friendship and Kaito felt like a real person. Sometimes he wouldn't be in a quest just because Yagami called him for help and he said he has other stuff planned for that time. Sometime he's solve something offscreen on his own without any involvement from Yagami because he's a competent person who'd act on his own if involving Yagami wasn't necessary. He had an unprecedented level of agency for a video game NPC and it made him into such a well-rounded character who you could believe and get invested into as a real person. I'd bet that's why he's so beloved and why he's the only character beside Haruka to turn from a side character into a playable one. So turning him into a tool to show off how cool and sexy Kiryu is is especially offensive compared to any other character in the series.

    There is no fucking way you spent this whole video dogging on Gaiden for telling a shallow worthless story with no focus on the characters that apparently matter most, only to say Aizawa is a good final boss. Gaiden does suck, and its story is lame, but at least by being as long as Kiryu's parts in 5 it basically tells a version of that story where you don't have time to forget that Aizawa even exists at all. At least Shishido isn't quite as much of an ass pull as going from "I am a tojo grunt and I hate you" to "I am the son of the Omi chairman and I am a conniving master manipulator and I believe that dreams suck and natural talent is stupid." Even their "themes" are similarly shallow. Yakuza 5 says dream over and over and lists all the ways that dreams are a thing and how dreams affect things and people and how some people are evil and don't have dreams but they actually do unless they're Kanai. Gaiden says Kiryu erased his name and these are all the ways he's acting out of character and doing things he wouldn't have done before and he's forced to live a double life and he can't go back home because he erased his name and he isn't Kiryu because he's Joryu. They don't mean anything. They're just words that sound lofty because they're throwing around ideas and concepts without elaborating on anything about them in any meaningful way. They're not themes. They're checklists.

  • @DanzoLovesEyes
    @DanzoLovesEyes 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I agree with a lot of the points you made, and some new ones I actually haven't thought of, but still, i disagree with some others.
    1: Maybe it's just me, but juggle launchers were actually super consistant for me, the points you made about how Dragon's launchers don't work is weird, since the clip you put showed you trying to combo without switching styles, when that's what you were supposed to do, switching will cancel Kiryu's recovary time and allow you to combo straight away.
    Still though, the combat *is" pretty bad, Kiryu now has the speed of a decrepit old man, really, his charged dragon attacks are too fucking slow, it made it almost impossible for me to pull them off and juggle bosses consistantly without eating damage, and that was extra bullshit since i play without health upgrades, and the hyper armor they get is so unfair too, to the point where i'm literally doing a back combo, and the bosses will decide to turn around instantly and destroy a big portion of my health, Amon wws especially egregious since he tiger drops you mid combo, imagine that, i fucking side step and do a dodge attack to his back while he was attacking, and he instantly tiger drops me, the combat really degraded to me always dodging and doing some baby hits before immediately dodging again so that I don't get fucked over
    They also made juggling worse, it now has a 6 second time limit before the boss unceremoniously flops down, when LJ's system of just diminishing returns was perfectly fine.
    The real shitter here was that this came after Lost Judgment, imagine that, in LJ, you can actually do full combos off of back attacks, and when bosses get hyper armor, they block first before attacking, stopping you from just spamming attacks but not also fucking you over at the same time, this game's combat was a downgrade from LJ in every way.
    Now for the rest, Shishido didn't beat Saejima and Majima at the same time, he was just beaten by Kiryu, and then came back right after the Omi fight, and they specifically mention how it's his last stand, he's giving it his all, and he no longer cares about his health, the Jima bros didn't know that and rush him, and get suprised with how he was perfectly willing to take a knife through the hand and after a brief strugle, he knocks them back slightly, and after a short while, Kiryu beats him, and that tracks with his character, from the start of the game we know that he's not just some random mook and that he's actually strong.
    Other than that, I like that bit of forshadowing where Shsishido tells Tsuruno that he has to help out and treat his underlings right sometimes at the resturaunt scene.
    As for Watase speaking out loud, that makes sense, he's with his clan in an abandoned construction site, he trusts everyone there so he can speak loudly, you were right for the boat scene though, that one was stupid.
    As for the money, it stops being an issue as soon as the colesium is introduced, my problem is, as you said, with the Akane points, even though you could get them easily via sub-stories, actually locking fucking uprages behind them, and thus, main story progress was fucking bullshit, speaking of the colesium, leveling new fighters up is not an issue, since there's this one reletivly cheap item you could buy that instantly levels them up by a good amount.
    Now that you said it, that moment with Hanawa and the gun was really, really stupid i'm just imagining a comedic moment where Tsuruno walks in and sees Kiryu dead, also, the 'Test' would work..... if it was in some shounen anime with some other organisation, but not with a fucking secret branch of the government that has and is willing to threaten fucking orphanages.
    Kiryu made the deal for the Daidoji because, instead of just a big pile of cash, he gets that, plus more continuous support for the orphanage, plus the Jimas getting out of prison so no gang wars, plus, now most people think he's dead so less people will try to use the orphanage to fuck him over.
    Now for IW spoilers.
    Kiryu getting cancer and him being suprised about it makes sense.
    Hanawa suddenly being more antagonistic to Kiryu doesnt make any fucking sense.
    The only way Gaiden changed my experiance with 8 is making me laugh out loud when we saw Hanawa die and then imeadietly getting the reminicance ost over 'So, Hanawa's dead'
    The life links were super weird with the whole Kiryu is alive reveal thing, and the funny thing is that it would have worked if it wasn't gated with story progression and if they removed any mention of Tatara in there.
    Oh, and the Daidoji directly target Kiryu in the last life link because Kiryu and Date were directly, intentionally breaking the contract by trying to meat Haruka, unlike with Tatara because that was clearly against their will.
    The reason the Daidoji couldn't do much in this game is because one, they lost a lot of power since their main party lost the election due to Masato, and 2, most of the story takes place in America, so they can't act much there without alerting the government.
    Speaking of Vtoubers, they make sense here, Yakuza games always feature the times they were in, and Vtubers are a big thing in 2023, and them taking Daigo and co. down by using a mix of some true information, like them making back deals with the government, the biases against yakuza, a larger platform, and (implied) a lot of inflamatory language, spinning the truth in alot of really disengenous ways, and some straight up lies would actually fuck over a security company trying to be legitimate.
    As for the ending, I really liked it, I don't think the major moment where we see Kiryu finally deciding to live and try to cure his cancer instead of just letting it take him, along with him finally being free of the Daidoji, taking his name back and being allowed to be with his family without putting them in danger is a 'wet fart'
    For why Kiryu got his name back, well, it's also kind of implied, the Daidoji said that they would treat him more kindly due to Hanawa, he just helped in the completion of a major mission in Hawai, he's already getting much weaker, so less useful due to his cancer, and it's already done, his face was in the news, trying to hide it more would be usless.
