I read an article somewhere (that I can't find right now) that the amount of water recommended by government agencies to drink is quite a lot higher in the US than in Europe. As I understand it, the number used in the US has since been debunked, but still kind of lives on in the official recommendations and in people's minds. And I think that's part of the culture clash here, Europeans don't obsess about getting enough water as much, the general belief is that you get enough if you drink when you're thirsty. It's funny, the other day I spotted three American tourists in Sweden, before they had spoken at all. So it was not loudness, and not even sporty clothes, they were blending in pretty well clothes wise. It took me a moment to realise what made me look at them and think "not from here". Well, it was three men in their 20's, each carrying a water bottle. It's just not a common site here. It is not a thing a young man will prioritise when going out for the day if he's not going on a hike or the gym. I have zero male friends, family, acquaintances that would do that. No judgement though, I carry a water bottle everywhere I go, even though I'm European, but I'd say I'm in a minority doing that. 😅
Hahaha it is a tell tale sign! I remember I had a French teacher in Paris who made fun of my water bottle. He always asked if I had vodka in it 💀. But I think it’s becoming more and more common here! Also interesting about the water myth in the US. I agree, since living here I just don’t worry so much about it
