    This is so true. It is such a main part of life across the world, and both members and women did it, it just became a more female thing while men fought wars, it was how the women helped the fighters and kept up the war from their end. Knitting actually goes back to Neanderthal man. Yeah, pre humans knit and we most likely learned from them to knit, make jewelry, and tattoo ourselves.

    I come from a house of overconsumption but like to the EXTREME. I am blessed to have grown up in a wealthy household but I sometimes find myself buying like 3 lipsticks in one shopping spree- I’m 16 and my spending habits reflect on my parents. I’m trying to break the habit slowly be more mindful of how I spend my money because I spend my paycheck FAST and I have so much clothes that I don’t even wear. I think overconsumption is very cultural in America and richer countries. “I need this new lipstick!” Yeah no- I’m blessed to have more than one shirt because some people don’t even have that- I don’t need a poorly made 80$ shirt because it’s “trendy” lol. This video is so interesting and you explain it very well.

      ahhh the fact that you’re aware of this and able to own up to certain habits says a lot about your character :). I think that’s the first step and it’s so normal to mimic behaviors you grew up with. I’m so glad you liked the video, but just a reminder that none of us are perfect! 😌

    The number of people who have bought from TikTok shop at least once doesn't really surprise me too much -- when it first launched, and even now, they offered ridiculous coupons like 50% or sometimes even more off of a first order. And, from my understanding, the barrier to being sent free items for promotional purposes is fairly low? I am surprised that legitimate sellers and small artists have managed to be successful at all on the platform. I see a lot of them specifically citing the shop's tight shipping window for sellers to be one of the reasons most don't sell on the platform at all. It seems to specifically cater to people selling manufactured, ready to ship items. I do have the shop tab on my personal TikTok account. The aggressive pop-ups for limited time deals and coupon codes remind me a lot of places like Temu and Shein. I don't often see lives that are specifically selling things, but I would say every 2-3 videos in my feed has a link to an item in the TikTok shop. This was a nice and thoughtful video. Like others have said, was kind of shocked to see this didn't come from a bigger channel!

    I actually disagree! Not about the stalking obviously, she definitely has a right to her and her family’s privacy, but I think when you sign up to be famous, you’re not just signing up to be a singer but also to have a famous person lifestyle. She definitely rose to fame quickly but she had been trying for a decade and had years to back out. Part of what’s in the famous lifestyle is being open to being a public figure who takes photos, talks to fans, and has a reputation. Idk, I’m not her, I don’t understand how she feels, I just think she isn’t totally in the right here. Great video though! I love how you have actual sources and proof on your claim!!

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      okay I can definitely see your point! I guess I'm mainly talking about dangerous fan behaviors in this vid, not the typical 'can i have a pic/autograph' interactions... I haven't thought about that much but my instinct is that it's polite for a celeb to say yes when they can, because their fans support their careers... but also I'm not sure where the line should be drawn!

    • @Nopee906
      @Nopee906 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No. Fans are not entitled to photos every damn time they see their favorite celebrity. Do you know how tight they are in time a lot of times? Going from an interview, to a shoot, to a show (or whatever) So if they take pictures with every fan that sees them out and about, then it's going to make it harder on them to meet their ACTUAL contractual obligations. Fuck that up, and they fuck up every other opportunity that could come their way.

    I have seen quite a bit of this "overconsumption is still a problem even if it's secondhand" stuff going around. And while I don't disagree, and I continue to listen to/read what these things are saying, I am still having a hard time understanding why it's bad to buy more from thrift stores when the statistics are being given of how much of it then goes to the landfill. If I purchase more of it...doesn't that help keep it out of the landfill? Is the subtext or assumption supposed to be that I am then going to go home and donate as much or more than I purchase? If I keep what i buy, where's the problem?

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't think there's a problem with keeping what you buy, I think that's great! to me the point of bringing this up is to remind each other that it's good to shop consciously no matter where we're shopping from. I get what you're saying, it's difficult because you would be saving so many items from landfill if you were to go on thrifting sprees every day. but maybe it's that psychologically (or socially? not sure), this feeds our addiction to shopping. idk i'd never tell anyone to be a martyr and never buy anything again. i just think it's an interesting convo :)

    This video is so stupid and uninformed.. anyone who's worked closely with thrift stores or overseas donation processing is disturbingly aware of the tons of clothes out there. The more people who want to shop secondhand, the better. Praying for the day that people actually educate themselves instead of parroting other uninformed people on TikTok.

    • @carlascalling
      @carlascalling 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      oh 😔 i agree with you and touched on this in the video, that the second best way to consume - after not consuming at all, which i don't think is realistic - is to buy secondhand. i'd say this video is more about the lies people tell themselves when they overconsume as opposed to telling people to not buy secondhand. i love secondhand shopping!

  • @Themagpiecanfly
    @Themagpiecanfly 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I don’t necessarily think that the gentrification of thrifting is the main reason that thrifting is getting more expensive. There is a lot of expenses involved with running a store- employees, rent, supplies are all getting more expensive (especially rent and I def think employees should be paid a living wage). Additionally thrift stores often use proceeds to fund there charitable efforts (another can of worms- you should be at least aware of what your money is funding at these places) and those charitable efforts are getting more expensive as well. There are charities that donate clothing directly to low income folks and if you’re passionate about that, donate money or goods there. There is no such thing as ethical consumption, but thrifting is a better option overall.

    Disagree with so much in this video. Thrifting is more sustainable than buying new and people need clothes, that is just fact. The problems in reality are microtrends, overconsumption, capitalism and inflation. These factors changed the landscape of thrifting, sure, but it also changes the first hand market. And in the end, an item that is already in a thrift store can only either get purchased or disposed of. So wouldn't you rather someone bought it, no matter what they are buying it for? And regarding resale: your argument would make sense if thrift stores had a supply problem and resalers weren't leaving anything for other people but this is simply not the case. You are saying yourself that only 10-20% of clothes even end up on the floor and a large part of that percentage doesn't get purchased. So what harm does it do if a reseller choses to put in their time and money to make some of these pieces accessible for people who are looking for something specific and don't have the opportunity to shop at that place themselves? By the way, it is not lucrative at all to do resale. I have been reselling true vintage (90s and older) for fun for 4-5 years now. I put in about 10-20h a week and my yearly revenue is about 10000€ and the profit is maybe 2000€. It pays about as well as a really crappy MLM. And I am one of the most successful German vintage sellers on Etsy, so it is not a skill issue. It simply doesn't pay. Please rethink your stance on thrifting before you put out such damaging statements again. As I said, thrifting is not the problem and people should not be discouraged from it or forced to justify why they thrift. Be glad for every item that gets rescued and instead direct your criticism towards those who overconsume new items and who cause this massive amount of donations on the first place.

      i agree with you. i think that secondhand is better than buying new! like i said in the beginning of the video, I love thrifting. but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to have a conversation about its downsides. at the end of this video i'd say this video is more about the lies people tell themselves when they overconsume "it's okay, i'll donate it", not about the people who prioritize shopping secondhand

    Thank you, I really enjoyed the video. Just one point: if you have to catalogue your wardrobe, you have too many clothes already. Even here in the rainy and fairly cold Wales, all my clothes fit into a single wardrobe and two small chests of drawers. There are no walk-in or built-in wardrobes here, I see all my clothes every day. I can tell by heart what items I have.

    Im writing this like seven minutes into this video, so there's a chance you're still going to bring this up. I understand what you're trying to get at. But if you simply compare going to the thrift store vs. buying something brand new thrifting is still 100x better for the planet. In some circumstances (like the goodwill bins) the clothes there are at their last stop before being sent to the landfill. If I can prevent them from reaching the landfill that's clearly somewhat sustainable. And lets say I resell that item; it may prevent that individual from going on Amazon, Walmart, Shein, etc. and buying the same thing brand new. I would rather make the Goodwill Owners rich than the Amazon owners rich. But I do see what you're getting at to an extent.

    Online selling is not something new. Thrifting for resale is also not a new concept. This has been going on for decades. It is also not as lucrative as you may think and it is NOT causing higher thrift store prices, etc. You said that something like 10% of clothing donations even make it to the floor of thrift stores. If people buying for resale was making a dent then that percentage would be much higher for thrift stores because they would need to put more out on the floor due to increased sales.

    I'm gonna listen to all your video to see if there are any points I haven't considered but where I live everybody buys SH. With a small child that is growing and the current recession leaving me unemployed I thrift a lot and resell what I no longer need. I have a lot of clothes I could probably do without but I turn them into fabric for my kids plushoes or leggings. I thrift for fabric that I later use in the home to reupholster a chair etc. I don't know what I would do without SH . Its a great source of furniture toys baby clothes clothes for us shoes outerwear. We mend what we can. In these tough times we gotto be wise with our coin. We're all kinda poor these days. Yeah, maybe in the US that's how it goes. But here in Germany it is affective because it is expensive to buy reusable bags and plastic bags so you will not buy as much. Same with clothes, most people at least where I live buy second hand, but it's not cheap-cheap and new clothes cost a lot. So the issue is more cultural I'd say than just saying 'thrifting is destroying the planet'.

    It depends. Just because some influencers find thrifting edgy and cool now, doesn't mean that me being a poor eastern european who cant afford zara or h&m will stop buying clothes from thrift shops or vinted. I just think that americans try to apply the same consumerist mindset while thrifting. You can make a big purchase once a year, not every week. I think that they try to be 'sustainable' or 'ethical' because it is a trend, not a necessity. That is not the reality for the majority of people. But, i think it is still better that they overconsume in the second hand market than directly from the inditex or shein.

    I am so happy this conversation is being brought up! I think it’s always better to buy second hand, and if you can get something you would have bought new second hand that’s great, but if you’re doing it to fill some overconsumption habit or addiction you’re not gonna be working on consuming better/less but instead you’re just feeding into the idea of buying to buy. ✨ I remember thrifting as a kid/teen cus that was the only option and the best way for me to explore my style w a small budget, but I didn’t buy with the “haul”/gratification mentality. Now I still buy mostly secondhand but I know my style and what I want so paying a little more for a high quality item that’s vintage is great, but I think we need to have a conversation about - not needing that much stuff - because honestly that’s a whole different conversation, but consuming like you’re a “king” is not gonna make you one, it’s gonna make you feel like if you don’t consume you’re feeling scarce instead of being happy with what you do have! Which doesn’t mean you’re “poor” it means you’re grateful. Anyways great video💖

      this is such a great take and i really love that you brought in the more emotional side of this. we overconsume often because it makes us feel better. i think it's a fair way to respond to stress, considering how accessible it is, but it can't be great for the environment. i tried to make it clear in the video that i love secondhand shopping and just wanted to spark this convo about overconsumption under the guise of sustainability!

      @@carlascalling it’s soooo good to have the conversation that consuming “sustainably” isn’t really that sustainable! Greenwashing is becoming so much more prominent especially since companies know they can’t make money off of people consuming less so instead they make people believe that consumption can be good, but it’s all buying into the mentality of scarcity. I read a book about Green Capitalism that really opened my eyes on this subject!

    I get what youre saying, I think you reiterate points that are in the popular opinion at the moment, so this is not really directed at you but to add to the discussion: you bring up the point that the gentrification of charity shops where the less fortunate cannot afford the newly raised prices. My question then would be what the data is on how often these people buy clothes vs receive direct donations from charities. The reason being, I worry that this idea that its taking away from the less fortunate is just an excuse for people that can afford it, but want cheaper clothes. The thing is charity shops were never actually made for the less fortunate, they were invented geared towards the mid market to raise money for the less fortunate. To me I wonder if the idea will cause us to lose focus over what the charity really wants, which is to raise money so they can actually help

I can't speak for other regions, but everywhere I've lived, it's been incredibly easy to find quality used clothing for extremely cheap prices. housing and food is another story.
