I am an Italian gay citizen who moved to the UK ten years ago partly to escape the homophobic environment. Hearing that things are getting better fills me with extreme joy, really. I was sort of not updated anymore on LGBT issues in Italy as I often go back to Italy only for a few days and to visit family so I think I had completely lost track of Italy's position on LGBT+ matters. I think the general problem in Italy is also that people tend to be very prescriptive when it comes to talking about gays. They might tell you "oh it's totally ok if you are gay... [and then it comes the bad part] but do not act that camp / do not be that effeminate / to not shove it down our throats / why do you have to walk like that or act like that" and things like that. As your friend said, I think ignorance and shame are still a big part of the problem, which is a cultural issue (more than a religious one - people in Italy are not even that religious in practice - most people don't even know what the bible says). It all goes back to the whole 'bella figura' idea that you have to behave in a certain way in society and if you step outside those canons then you are not accepted anymore. Very normal to see straight couples in Italian basically having sex on park benches but try and be a gay couple even holding hands walking down the street - people still give you funny looks whether they admit it or not. Anyway hopefully things will really be better in 10-15 years!
Tia you found the very best person to talk about this... he can explain things in a very simple way and in a very sweet way!! I think this video can help more people to understand more than any "tv talk" with too loud people screamning and not telling "real" concept! Good Job guys!
This was a really interesting video, I'm glad you uploaded it. The experience of living in Italy as an LGBT person rarely comes up as a conversation topic, even with my own friends belonging to the LGBT community, as it's not usually particularly easy or pleasant to talk about; it's always good to spread knowledge about what it's like and the struggles that come with it. And it's also nice to see a fellow Neapolitan on your channel! I've been following your channel for a while and I always enjoy your videos. Looking forward to the next one! It would be interesting to see a video comparing the attitudes toward mental health issues in the US and in Italy as well.
Roman Darius okay. Don't go along with my lifestyle then. Don't know how you could know what my lifestyle is considering you don't know me, but yeah. Why would I care?
And also, try and be kinder in expressing your views, because the second sentence of your comment was rather rude, if not worse. Kindness doesn't hurt anyone.
Great video Tia and Matteo, I live in Milan too and i have to say that here the common LGBT acceptance is the best in Italy and in general it's like that in many big cities, and the overall situation in italy is far better than the past one. But besides that, we are still far behind other european countries like Sweden, UK, Spain and France, and it's mostly fault of the church and the common ignorance in small cities. The number of cases of LGBT discrimination in public places like pools, hotels and restaurants reported in medias is astonishing for a civilized country, but the hope for the future is to destroy prejudices and homofobia in Italy! Grande Tia! I tuoi video sono fantastici, continua così! Ti adoro =D
i'd also like to add that, as you said, the discussions about gender that you have in america in italy aren't even thinkable as of now. That's because other LGBT groups like bisexual (that are not so unknown but almost everyone in italy doubt their existance and treat them like a "fashion"), and like pansexual, asexual, demisexual and non binary (who are completely unknown and they have almost no representation even in prides, and when they come out there's completely no understanding of them), do not have the same public recognitions as gays and lesbian so it's very difficult for them to get some visibility.
As a pan italian woman I think the problems in Italy come not when you come out but when you express your love in public. It's like many straight people are "hey ok i accept the fact that you are gay, but you can't kiss your boyfriend here in the middle of the crowd! what would children think?!" and that's odd. Like yeah u can be whatever you want but in private. And also, I think that today in Italy bisexual, pansexual, trans or asexual people are a little less accepted than gays or lesbians, bc a straight person can understand better a "one-way" range of sexuality. (it's just my personal opinion based on my personal experience when i tell someone i like people beyond the gender). not to talk about lgbt community in the agesci, that is a way more complicated topic. sorry for my english ;)
The issue is that we have so many fuckin prude people living in Italy. Sexuality is a taboo, gender is a taboo, expressing love in public is a taboo. So many bigots and religious obtuse people.
if Im not wrong italy had the first transgender woman in parliament in the 90s. And the first worldpride was organized 27 years ago in Rome. Gay politicians have always been voted without problems, see mr. crocetta or mr. vendola as governors of their regions years and years ago. Also, italy never had laws which criminalized gay people, unlike the UK for example. It's interesting, there are a lot of apparent contraddictions. I agree with your friend but I'd say the vatican (and not simply the catholic church, italy has the vatican inside his country, a bit different) has much more influence than what he thinks (in fact the first worldpride in rome was openly criticized by pope joan paul II) , even though I recognize the role that our politicians had in all of this (I agree with him when he says many of them don't represent our society).
Anastasia Clare *insert you/the point meme* just joking. In order to become governor you need votes (btw the comedian you are referring to doesn't sit in parliament). My point was that, despite the fact that italy is behind on lgbt rights, people historically never had problems with gay people. As i said, there are more progressive nations which rated homosexuality as a crime in the past. Italy didn't. The first transgender woman who sit in parliament was an italian trans. woman. The first worldpride took place in Rome despite the high pressure against the event made by the Vatican and the Pope. People don't care about sexuality of politicians or public figures etc etc. Still, italy is a bit behind than some other nations from a legislative point of view. That is what I meant when I talked about contraddictions.
Joy The Vatican State dropped the "crime" of homosexuality long before Italy itself and many prominent so-called highly civilised European Countries. Don't even get me started about fast-growing minorities such as the Islamic one. They keep silent nobody asks them don't ask don't tell you know because of many reasons, new evangelical groups on the rise, and nobody talks about them too. I could go on but I've alreadyeady have been lengthy.
Actually, during Fascist Era, homosexuality WAS a crime. It wasn't explicitly condemned by the law because it would have meant to acknowledge its very existence, that had been strenuously denied for centuries; this "silent treatment" was pursued by Police and law officers under the umbrella of "oltraggio al pudore" (offence to modesty) or "corruzione di minorenni" (corruption of a minor). Just after the Nazist racial laws were out, the fascist government pulled out its own law against homosexuality (among the ones against several "races"), but it wasn't strongly pursued. Much more effective was the pervasive fascist cultural campaign about the "manly man", strong, aggressive, bold and, above all, womanizer, even when married.
Thank you for this video Tia, it's great that you had someone to talk about their experience, it really gave a more thorough insight into this topic. My respect for you just continues to grow!
Thanks for this video and thanks for bringing in someone that's actually experienced this side of it. I'm learning Italian and whilst I don't want to live there it's always concerned me how people treat us there. Thank you :)
Good job Tia!
I haven't commented in a while because of my schedule, but i gotta say I'm happy of this video, and I'm happy of the message that it brings. As a gay man myself i agree with what you're friend said,we are a little late on this issues (we are always late in general 😂) but we'll get there. Thanks tia for being and ally 😘
@Twitter Stuff it really depends from the family you have! My family, countryside south Italy, accepted me no problems. 2019 Statistics say that 75% of population accepts homosexuality, www.pewresearch.org/global/2020/06/25/global-divide-on-homosexuality-persists/ this acceptance is much stronger within youngsters. Said that, the influence of the church in Italy is probably stronger than in other countries as we have the Vatican. In terms of legislation Italy is behind of most of western countries and this also influences perception of the people
Lesbian from the southern US here! The experiences of LGBT people in the south seem very different from the north. We didn't get gay marriage here until the supreme court ruling in 2015, and I was surprised even by that. I didn't think I'd be able to marry until my 40s (I'm 25) based on the political climate of my state. Additionally, I've heard employers brag about refusing to hire people because they "seem gay." I know several people who were disowned from their families while they were still in high school because they're LGBT. It's definitely institutional discrimination down here, and I live in one of the most liberal areas of my state. That's not even getting into the controversy surrounding trans people being able to use the bathrooms, having access to hormones/medical care, and the discrimination they face from employers. That said, it does seem that the US is further along with regards to LGBT rights than Italy based on this video- I mean, we have marriage now and most people I know are out at least to their friends & families, even sometimes to their employers.

Thank you for posting this. As a gay male interested in visiting Milan, and touring Italy it brings a lot of insight as to what your friend Matteo experience has been like as a homosexual-Italian youth. I a, surprised that with all of the art, fashion, drama, creativeness, and culture that homosexuality and LGBTQ rights are not the norm based on what your friend Matteo's experience has been. There are also people commenting saying that there has been members of the LGBTQ community actively setting a positive example in Italian culture from their own experience and with proven facts which was also great to see. I love these videos they are helping me know what it is like. I also like how openly you talk about your heritage. My heritage is Trinidadian and Euro-mix therefore, I can relate a lot to your comments in other videos about Caribbean culture and dating someone from a traditional background. Love the video blog Tia Xoxo Andy Jones
Thank you so much for this video, it's really appreciated. I've been looking for something like this for the past year and haven't had any real luck until now.. You've been a great help, grazie tanto
The Netherlands was the first ever - European or not - country to legalise same sex marriage :--)! Spain shows you can be firmly religious & catholic whilst still being gay friendly
Dear Tia, I'm italian and i'd like to say that the generation Z is far away from the old generation, which it's the most homophobic (not all of it, of course). By the way i thought that this was an important thing to say
Tia you're the best! I appreciate that you took your time and effort to do a video about homosexuality in Italy. I also want to thank your cute and brave guest! Whenever I'm in Italy I still feel that being gay is still a tabood topic compared to Spain and basically all the rest of of European countries. Something totally unexplicable to me, with most Italian men looking so gay (that's a compliment, hello?!), Italy as the birthplace of GOOD style and fashion, the Vatican with all the closeted gay men in there (it's a fact, not a prejudice), and last but not least, Italy being shaped in the form of a dragqueens' boot (as Jack once put it in a Will and Grace episode) :-) Anyway, I hope that your video will trigger an enormous wave of proud LGBTs coming outs all over Italia! RAISE YOUR FLAG!
I agree with you that politics affects us all. But I would suspect the majority of people are on this channel because of the Italy-themed videos. Sometimes people need an escape, rather than being bombarded with news every day. It's not really relevant to this channel, but it's of course up to Tia.
I've been waiting for this for months tooIt seems that Matteo has focused on the positives more than the negatives but it's okay. I can really see the situation changing now and it really has changed more in the past 5 years than it has ever before..honestly I feel like gay rights and passing a civil unions law was a taboo topic in Italy just, say, 10 years ago. And the issue of homophobia like he said is more closely related to Italian culture of traditionalism than to catholicism, unlike foreigners think. It's like according to the italian mentality gay relationships are perceived as a threat to the traditional family which is at the core of italian culture with all of its values. That being said, I think the average person in Italy is still pretty homophobic (maybe because the average person will be older as well) unless you live in a big/liberal city like Milano or Bologna. Being from a small town in the north, I experienced bullying in college after being outed. It's funny because I thought it was university and nobody was going to care but instead it was way less of a big deal in my high school if you were gay. I would also have loved an Italy vs Usa video on this one, but I guess you can always do that later on.
just a few moments before I saw the notification of this video I found out that here in Bergamo there are some parking lots prohibited to foreigners and lesbian to "defend the natural family"..I'm shocked.
nanez it's the northern league. What do you expect. That said it's discriminatory and all the other parties have already raised their voice against it. I think it will be erased soon. *edit: the administration apologized and this idiocy has been ereased
le parole dell'assessore in risposta alle critiche per quel parcheggio sono state orribili: "Non discriminiamo nessuno perché non togliamo diritti a nessuno, semplicemente aggiungiamo diritti ulteriori a una determinata formazione sociale che intendiamo promuover e preservare" the speech of the assessor in response to the critics about that parking spot was horrible: "We do not discriminate anyone because we do not negate any right to anyone, simply we add further rights to a determined social formation that we want to promote and preserve"
I’m gay and I will go to Italy next year. I don’t wanna be verbally or physically abused like what I experienced in Japan (verbal abuse) even in my school (I’m studying fashion which is ironic).
@Manoa I see a lot of people saying it's only the old generations in japan are like that but the younger generations are more homophobic. And they're not religious, they just think it's disgusting and unnatural.
i know the church here is not the only thing playing a part in how italy perceive lgbt+ people, but if you say that here it's "cultural" we have to clarify what are the _causes_ and the _consequences_ . For how I see it, the fact that our culture is still really traditional and full of stereotypes of *all* genre is just a consequence of the strong influence the church has always had in this country. And even tho now we are going forward, it's hard to eradicate these thoughts from our minds, since our culture was basically *_built_* around catholic church's principles.
I was kinda worried when this came up in my subscriptions that I wasn't going to agree with it but I really like Matteo, he raised some good points and spoke very intelligently - although I think he's a little too optimistic compared to my point of view. It's too bad it took you a while to find someone who wanted to come on the channel and discuss these topics, if I was still living in Italy I would have done it in a heartbeat!!!
Where are you from? The situation in Italy is pretty bad for trans people in my opinion, I’m not sure like for transitions since it’s not my case, but at least in the general opinion Italians are incredibly ignorant about trans issues, the most they understand is gay/lesbian/bisexual and they still don’t fully accept them, I would advise you to go to some other place, the word trans here is often associated to scandals and people still think it’s some sexual thing rather than what it really is, I hope you research carefully before deciding
@@milkRasberryshake 1- define pretty bad in a scale otherwise it could mean everything and nothing, I honestly think that things have gotten better also for trans people. Until 10 years ago you would only hear about trans on tv when it was about killed prostitutes or sex scandals. Now there are many trans youtubers talking about their transition, tv treats the topic in a way more normal and informative way. A trans mayor was elected few years ago, and a trans minister was in charge 15 years ago.Yes, Italy is still behind some countries, but it has gotten much better then in the past I would say. I don't think genderfluid is really an issue either, it has not the bad connotation that being trans has had in the past (80's-90's), when it was mostly related to marginalised people force to work as sex workers because it was the only job they could find. Also, I think people over 40 don't even know what gender fluid means.
Once I heard this phrase that was something along the lines of "if Americans were to watch the discussions happening in Italy right now, they would feel as if they're watching a black and white television" and I think this is still relevant about homosexuality.
Uhh, believe me, there are parts of the U.S. that are waaaaaaay behind on this issue. I risk saying that most parts, outside of large metropolitan areas are not open about it.
mena mena I think attitudes are changing even in conservative places and groups. There’s a lot of visibility of LGBT in the US, which helps. And even LGBT conservatives help build the bridge. But of course there’s still some progress that needs to be made
thank you thank you thank you for this video, i'm learning italian and really want to go to italy someday and maybe live their but i was worried about gay rights there and i don't want to go to a country where i'm going to be in danger because of my sexuality. i couldn't find much other information about this stuff so thank you so much for this.
Tia, your videos are always interesting. However, recently I notice that the audio quality is a little lower...your voice is always somewhat in the background. Perhaps you should speak a little clser to the mike. My 2ç anyway. Ciao!
Political career and Democracy are two conflicting definitions. As long as italian politicians will believe that the majority of italians are cryptohomophobic they will keep slowing down the introduction of rights for LGBT community into the italian set of laws. So as long as there is no time limit for every political mandates, social developments will be slowed down everywhere, not only in Italy.
I'm genderfluid (which is even lest understood than the normal transgender) and I really want to visit Italy but I'm scared because of my gender identity /:
Tryng to write in english... Like I readed in the book "The gay moviment in Italy", in my country in '800/beginning of '900, there isn't a real law against homosexuality, even in fascist time, because it was not percepted like a real problem. Mussolini said "in Italy are all males", for explayn why there wasn't a real law. Homosexuality was punished only if the fact was a public knowledge, becoming "pubblic scandal", but in the own house a gay can do sex with another man without punishment. For this relative "approval", the gay moviment don't became so strong like in the country where if you had homosex sex, you could have serius problem. Sorry for my english, it sucks. ps Ovviously, lesbiand doesn't exist, like the woman sex pleasure.
Would be interesting to have a vlog about being straight vs eteroflexible, bisessuale, bi-curioso, fluid which mashable did a write up on this I found interesting. I know there is a part of lbgtq+++ which is called questioning.
Naples is the only city of western world, and christianity (not necessarily catholic) that in the past centuries had a large acceptance of the diversity of genders. I think It is a very peculiar situation for the whole Europe.
In this year I was in Siciliy in Palermo and in the province of this city. In Palermo I saw guys kissing each other at Via Meusa and nobody insulted them. Another guy near the Cathedral sad to me as commentary "che carino sei" but unfortunately he looked like 50 and I am 29. I was also in Bari and in Napoli. At Neaples has a very huge gay community and bars and places. This Matteo is a very nice orsino. I could cuddle him. 😉 I wish I could have a boyfriend like him.
The situation now is better than like 5 or 6 years ago. Yeah the goverment is against lgbt, but people are becoming more and more mind opened. I live in a small town in southern italy and i can tell that omosexualuty is well acceptet by the population. And the situation it's the same to other towns next to the one i live.

How's everything now? This was four years ago so hopefully, the situation has changed positively.
if Im not wrong italy had the first transgender woman in parliament in the 90s.
Joy basically anyone can be a politician in italy, if you know the right people. we had pornstars and comedians which sit as politicians 😂
Anastasia Clare *insert you/the point meme*
just joking.
Joy oh, i was joking (maybe).
by the way i found your point of view really interesting
Much more effective was the pervasive fascist cultural campaign about the "manly man", strong, aggressive, bold and, above all, womanizer, even when married.
aaand your channel keeps getting better and better. queen of informative youtube
Wow! This was a very interesting video, I rarely here LGBT topics in Italy discussed. Keep up the good work! Also your friend did an excellent job! :)
Thank you for this video Tia, it's great that you had someone to talk about their experience, it really gave a more thorough insight into this topic. My respect for you just continues to grow!
WE ALREADY LOVE THIS VIDEO, QUEEN OF LGBT
Mattia Piredda aw! I love you guys ❤️
Willwosh is actually subscribed to Tia Taylor's channel, so he may see this video
Monia De Luca I would be honored!
1.Quelli a favore.
FoxLuca Volpe hai detto tutto!
Raised in Sicily...when I tried to tell my mother I like girls she told me SHE WOULD DIE....I left Italy since then and now I live my life happily🌈💚🌈
@Twitter Stuff it really depends from the family you have! My family, countryside south Italy, accepted me no problems. 2019 Statistics say that 75% of population accepts homosexuality, www.pewresearch.org/global/2020/06/25/global-divide-on-homosexuality-persists/
this acceptance is much stronger within youngsters.
Scilla fa coming out e Tia fa questo video.....chiamiamole coincidenze xD
I have been waiting for this video for months!!

Ottima consapevolezza e informazione, Matteo.
Abbiamo fatto grandi passi negli ultimi 10 anni però. Avanti cosi!
Love the video blog Tia

Thank you so much for this video, it's really appreciated. I've been looking for something like this for the past year and haven't had any real luck until now.. You've been a great help, grazie tanto
The Netherlands was the first ever - European or not - country to legalise same sex marriage :--)!
Spain shows you can be firmly religious & catholic whilst still being gay friendly
I disagree Spain is more liberal and secular than Italy. Italy is more religious than Spain
Bellissimo video, Tia, e molto interessante!
Complimenti a entrambi! 😊
I have no idea what’s he said, I watched the whole thing, I’m like keep talking. Italian is so beautiful
I'm behind in seeing your videos, but Matteo is an extremely handsome and well spoken guy. If only I'd see this sooner, I'd ask him to coffee. :)
You should collab with Guglielmo Scilla!

What a great video. You included every important aspect. Thank you very much.
that picture behind you is dope
Thank you for the English subtitles 👌🏼
Tia can you do a video where you express your opinion about the "daca" situation in the USA? xoxo
I can see about it:)
Tia Taylor I want to see a Hispanic talk about racism towards black people first.
Please don't. We want to see Italian stuff on this channel! Not every TH-camr needs to get political. We love you though :)
I like very much this kind of videos, they are really interesting!
Good job Tia,you're one of the best youtubers!😘

Bellissimo video Tia :)
Bel video Tya!
just a few moments before I saw the notification of this video I found out that here in Bergamo there are some parking lots prohibited to foreigners and lesbian to "defend the natural family"..I'm shocked.
nanez it's the northern league. What do you expect. That said it's discriminatory and all the other parties have already raised their voice against it. I think it will be erased soon. *edit: the administration apologized and this idiocy has been ereased
I think and I hope it, too
the speech of the assessor in response to the critics about that parking spot was horrible:
"We do not discriminate anyone because we do not negate any right to anyone, simply we add further rights to a determined social formation that we want to promote and preserve"
Thank you so much for this
I love you guys, great video. From a british- italian trans woman in London xxx
Matteo is so cute oh my god i love him
Omg Matteo! I love you! :P
not much to say, this was perfect. Thanks.
I’m gay and I will go to Italy next year. I don’t wanna be verbally or physically abused like what I experienced in Japan (verbal abuse) even in my school (I’m studying fashion which is ironic).
In Japan? Really? I mean I thought since many of them are atheists they just wouldn't care lol
@Manoa I see a lot of people saying it's only the old generations in japan are like that but the younger generations are more homophobic. And they're not religious, they just think it's disgusting and unnatural.
Hi
i know the church here is not the only thing playing a part in how italy perceive lgbt+ people, but if you say that here it's "cultural" we have to clarify what are the _causes_ and the _consequences_ .
Grazie per questo Tia. Love the painting as well, sei tu??
I love how he talks with his hands, something I do as well.
I think almost all politicians in all countries usually never represent what the people really want.
I would love a video about what it's like to be trans in Italy!
I'm genderfluid and plan on moving to Italy next year
Where are you from?
But of course there’s still some progress that needs to be made
How are lesbians looked upon? in say for example Abruzzo..? As we are thinking of moving there. I am Scottish my gf is Dutch?
Bravissimi guys well done :))

thank you thank you thank you for this video, i'm learning italian and really want to go to italy someday and maybe live their but i was worried about gay rights there and i don't want to go to a country where i'm going to be in danger because of my sexuality. i couldn't find much other information about this stuff so thank you so much for this.
Tia, your videos are always interesting. However, recently I notice that the audio quality is a little lower...your voice is always somewhat in the background. Perhaps you should speak a little clser to the mike. My 2ç anyway. Ciao!
Awesome videeopo
Thanks. This is a very interesting prespective.

Matteo is really cute!
How is PDA between two gay couples received in Italy?
not so well. it's just the idea that bothers ppl, but as soon as they get to know a couple who went through that it's fine
Can we have an update of this video? How is it now in 2019?
better

Naples is the only city of western world, and christianity (not necessarily catholic) that in the past centuries had a large acceptance of the diversity of genders. I think It is a very peculiar situation for the whole Europe.
it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femminiello
