Aaaahhhh! What a trio... And what a loss that Jeff Andrews already left us. I remember seeing Jeff a couple of times around 1990. Once with Steps Ahead, once with Mike Stern I think. I never heard of him before that and I remember saying to my girlfriend: "That bass player's performance is by far the best I ever saw and heard live". I think that statement still holds up for me until today.
In the summer (possibly spring? well, whenever) of 95 this very performance was aired when I was at a party. Someone turned on the TV for a moment and this was on and a minute later they switched channels. I upped and went home right away, caught the very end of the show and then looked in the paper for the tv listings and found there'd be a re-run a few days later (thank you very much public broadcasting for being awesome in Sweden). I was nailed to the TV on the re-run and taped the full performance and I've been in love with Mike Sterns music ever since. I've also been bummed out ever since that this particular concert was performed just 35ish miles from where I live...
@@steffenbrix I really don't know. I might, but that said... should I capture the VHS to any digital format I doubt it would be in any better quality than this youtube video. Hmm, I did mention the Swedish PBS being awesome (and it actually is) - I just might have to try emailing them asking if this is something they might consider, I dunno - Mike Stern/record company permitting - making available on their streaming service for some time. They do make old goodies available for limited time every now and then - haven't seen this one pop up just yet though.
What a trio. Absolute perfection. Each time I listen to Jeff Andrew's I am totally in awe. Such a phenomenal bass player taken far too early. Never saw him live but sure wish I had.
Guillaume Robert these look like the yamaha maple customs with the golden lugs from the 90's, which were also played by Steve gadd and Vinnie C back then
I friend had taped this of TV and we used to watch it over and over. A great concert, still love it today 18 years later.
