  • I'm SUPER EXCITED to have this fun new tool in my surface pattern design arsenal! I've been looking at getting an iPad for quite a while now and I can't wait to figure out how to best use it in my surface pattern design workflow. In this video, I walk through my very first impressions of my iPad, and my initial thoughts about how I'll be able to use it for all kinds of pattern-making goodness.
    I know that there are lots of you who use your iPads regularly for your surface pattern design work, so I would love to hear your best tips and tricks!

    Welcome to the magical world of Procreate! :) Your experience in painting with watercolors traditionally gives you a huge boost in making realistic digital watercolors. And even with “just getting started” with procreate, your work looks amazing! I love your traditional work, and I’m sure I’ll love your digital patterns too! As always, thanks for sharing your journey!

      That’s so kind of you to say!! But I 100% agree that my traditional work has been soooo helpful as I start to figure out my digital style. I think I would be really overwhelmed if I was starting from ground zero!

    This is awesome! Glad you’re enjoying the process 🎉. I really enjoy Procreate a lot, super functional and intuitive. I’ve also been playing with Adobe Fresco, which you can import any PS brushes in you may already have. They work back and forth when you export your layers, plus having adjustment layers without altering the original layer. … really wished Procreate has that, unless I’m not seeing that. Anyhow… So happy you got an ipad!! 🎉🎉🎉

    Yay!!! I just bought mine last week too! I have to admit to not setting it up yet hahaha! Wanted to get it before the new ones come out and price goes up.
    I purchased the cat coq bundle for procreate as well! I really liked your tutorials for photoshop for repeat patterns, do you think you will make some for procreate? I'm worried my paintings won't look as good in procreate because I use watercolor blooms to make my art. I would like to use it to make calligraphy quotes and incorporate my work or create a new style.

    • @pepostudios
      @pepostudios  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I probably will make some kind of tutorials way down the line once I’m better at this stuff! Haha. I think there are definitely ways to make your watercolors look super realistic in Procreate. You might have to play with different brushes and techniques, but I’m sure you will figure out something that works for you and your style!!

    Thank you so much for sharing such helpful information. I’m just starting my journey into surface pattern design. I know you use photoshop vs. adobe illustrator. Can you tell me why and what you feel are the downsides to AI?
    I really enjoy your TH-cam videos. Your content is full of helpful information! Many many thanks!!❤

    • @pepostudios
      @pepostudios  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m so glad you’re finding my videos helpful!! 🫶🏼 I personally prefer Photoshop and other raster-based programs because I really like the painterly/handmade/hand-painted look, and I feel like when you use vectors, you inevitably lose a lot of that. Don’t get me wrong, there is soooo much beautiful vector artwork out there! It’s just not really my style! AI is still a really powerful program, though, and one of my favorite things about learning the “Adobe language” is that a lot of the skills you learn by using one software are super applicable in other Adobe applications too. Does that answer your question?

      @@pepostudios very helpful!! Thank you! I feel like I may lean towards Photoshop as well. My journey began with painting watercolors so keeping the hand-panted vibe in my patterns is important to me as well.

    Thank you for sharing - I have just ordered my refurbished ipad Pro. It's smaller than yours, as I was thinking that the bigger one might be too big. Mine is 11inch and has 256GB. I bought it also to learn how to use Procreate as it looks like an amazing program to learn and play around with. Was setting up the ipad straight forward? I also wanted to invest in the Affinity suite. Thanks for the recommendation of Mel Armstrong's classes. I have bookmarked them in my Skillshare. She has so many! It's a bit overwhelming. Do you create your patterns big enough so you don't need to vectorise?

    • @pepostudios
      @pepostudios  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the 11” will be great in terms of portability! Setting up the iPad was super straightforward 🙌🏼 I’m also curious to play with Affinity Designer! Haha it’s true that Mel has a bunch of classes, but honestly just do one at a time and you’ll learn sooo much. Also - yes! I typically create my patterns on a very large canvas and using a very high dpi so I can keep them in raster.

    I work in watercolours and Procreate. I love both but even when I work with traditional materials, Procreate comes in handy. Sometimes it can be tricky to cut my painted elements from the background in Photoshop, especially if they're very detailed or the paper is heavily textured. I now use Procreate to cut them all out with the eraser tool. The end results are so much better than when I do it in P/S.

    Hello! I'm shopping iPads and am wondering which Apple pencil you use. I see the pro model is quite pricey. Is it necessary? Thanks so much for sharing so much helpful content!

    • @pepostudios
      @pepostudios  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I use the 2nd gen pencil! One of the big benefits of the pro is that it has more computing power than the other models, which means you can use way more layers in your Procreate files. If you don’t work in a lot of layers, you can definitely get away with a non-pro version! I also 100% recommend buying used instead of new. My iPad was basically in new condition, but I bought it secondhand from somebody. Not only does that save you money, but it’s much less wasteful than buying new ☺️
