I was warned to train for the Portuguese hills but I thought "Not me, I walk in hills all the time at home". No. I was wrong. Porto and Lisbon are SERIOUS workouts. But OMG, I fell hard in love with Porto.
Same! I walk 10-12k steps a day and hills routinely. And the hills were crazy!!
Now you know why i was so svelt and trom back then when i loved there. 😊
We talkin Naples, Italy type of hills? What a work out
I'm portuguese. Living in Lisbon is something else
The great thing about living in Porto (and probably Lisbon as well) is that navigating pretty much any other "hilly" place seems like a walk in the park afterwards, except for some Italian cities maybe.
I spent a month in Lisbon. I stayed in Sacavem, 8km to the north but it only took me 15 minutes by train to get into the city centre. The sidewalks are made out of chunks of Dolomite (manganese limestone). This makes them very hard wearing but slightly slippery even in dry weather. As a result, your feet are never getting a firm grip and it makes walking long distances arduous. Your feet will tire. Some hills are very steep so get a bus or tram to the top and walk down. Tram 28 is a bumpy ride. It's more comfortable getting the bus. The Belem seafront is much easier to walk because it's all flat. Go visit the technology museum and military museum on the Belem seafront. Hiring e-bikes and e-scooters are also an option. The best view of the city is from the Christ Statue on the opposite bank of the Tagus river. Get there by ferry boat and bus. Get the bus back over the 25th April bridge. Go eat at the ruined LX factory complex. Sintra is very hilly, so if you struggle with walking, I suggest Quelez Palace as an alternative. It's a Portuguese version of Versaille and it's all flat to walk around. You will see one of the earliest tennis courts in the gardens and it's where the Royal stables are located. The Oriente district is all modern with long cycling paths. Up towards the Vasco de Gama bridge you can see flocks of Flamingos. Central Lisbon is extra busy when the cruise ships come into dock. Nightlife is in Bairro Alto district. Pay a visit to the former Central Bank of Portugal. It's free to enter and you can touch a solid gold ingot behind bars in the vault. Carry coins on you. You will need them to use public toilets. And study how to order a coffee. The types of coffee they serve are not the same as in northern countries. A basic coffee from McDonalds in Lisbon is like a small expresso not a huge cup of watery coffee. If you really want to be adventuress, visit Thiep Senegal, a small but friendly African restaurant in the winding backstreets of Rossio.
I loved the review, as a Portuguese citizen I was very grateful for the honesty. Cheers.
Obrigado!!
Lisbon is one of my favorite cities!!! I’d visit again in a heartbeat, there’s not many places that I can say that.
We went to Lisbon in February a few years ago. Temperatures daily were low 50's to low 60's; we never had to make a reservation at a restaurant; the tram 28 was not crowded nor hot. In general, a very pleasant and comfortable experience. One of the best European cities to visit.
Day trip to Tomar - A gorgeous Knight's Templar enclave!
Our kids especially love Tomar.
Going there from May 5-9, very excited!
Awesome! Have fun!
I wouldn't put the hills in the hate category. For anyone that visited for instance Barcelona like myself, I almost felt claustrophobic, you're always under shade, you can't see past the next intersection, sometimes it feels difficult to know where you are going. I had this idea that it would be possible to see la sagrada familia from everywhere but you can't even see the tip one street before. Hills are what make Lisbon (and Porto) special, sunny and spacious, the river and the sea is visible from pretty much everywhere, barely any shade. The cobblestone sucks, not going to lie, I'm always slipping. My girlfriend broke her arm 2 weeks ago because of it
What foot wear do you need to wear?hope she is okay..
Developed a rash on the calf after a weekend of hot walking! My doc at home said: congrats! You’ve got what we call- Disney Leg! I’d still do it all over again anytime! Great city!
Great content! Cheers 🍻
Great video! Thanks for sharing
We loved our recent trip to Lisbon. The hills almost killed me. I know I was warned, but it really seemed like you had to go up hill to go down. Can’t wait to go back!
Good point, thanks for showing us.
We go to Lisbon every year as my husband has family there. We stay in the Alameda area as it’s not so touristy and has some great local restaurants. I can recommend a trip to Queluz Palace which is lovely and without the crowds of Sintra. Also really enjoy the Expo area in the evening, a great place for a riverside stroll, and the mall there is handy as it’s open until midnight.
Awesome review! Comprehensive, unbias
A very good video 😊 as usual
I was in Lisbon as things were just opening up after Covid and there were no crowds, which was great.
Geat video. You have a beautiful family!.
nice video about Lisbon, can;t wait spring time to visit this city.Keep going.
I just visited both Porto and Lisbon during spring break! Loved Porto, the people were warm and friendly unlike those in Lisbon. In Lisbon the weather was miserable and there weren’t as many locals who spoke English. Anyways I hope to return to see the areas I didn’t have a chance to visit. And hopefully the weather will be better.😊
@woltersworld Great breakdown of Lisbon's charms and challenges.
If you really must have an early lunch or dinner, it is very easy to go to the restaurants in any Mall. Some of them have decent restaurants and even churrascarias!
This is a very accurate and informative video
Will be spending 2 weeks in June…can’t wait. It looks amazing!
Yay will be there in May!!!!
Im jealous!!!! You will have so much fun!
Great and fun video ! Obrigado !
Thanks!
due is living life...wonderful places with wonderful family
We stayed in Alfama and loved the hills
Planning to visit Lisbon end of summer. Thank you for the heads up. I hope I can manage the tor elevations.
Great vlog! Love my forever home Lisboa! Pros far outweigh the cons!!! ❤Portugal
Hey Mark, great video
Thanks Tobi!
Visited Lisbon in December. Absolutely loved it
Its an awesome city
Cant wait 2.5 months, ill be in Lisbon, good stuff.
you will love it eric!
Love the video, can share similar experience we encountered when we visited Lisbon March, 2023. We were also approached by a guy asking about drugs, we said no thanks and moved on, no harassment of any kind. The hilly streets were also challenging for those not fit. The narrow streets were also something we aren’t used to.
6th reason to love Lisbon, Portugal🇵🇹 NFKRZ moved there
Food looks tasty
Just got back from 4 nights in Lisbon...we loved it. I should have gotten a fado restaurant recommendation from you. The one we went to was good...but certainly a tourist trap. I can verify that spring break is a great time to go. The weather, while it was predicted to be rainy, was actually sunny for us and around 65 degrees. And, I imagine much less tourists than the summer.
I didn't mess with taxis at all. Uber & Bolt were awesome and so reasonably priced.
Sounds like you had a great time
The food looks good here. As far as the hills, I don't think I would like that. This was a wonderful video!😊❤
Boys are really growing 👏
The hills, and the slick pavement tiles are what I don’t like about Lisbon, and other parts of Portugal. Walking up the hills is okay because I’m fit, but walking down hills is very hard on my knees, coupled with the slippy tiles is nerve wracking, as are the taxi rides with crazy drivers. Other than these, it’s my favorite European country.
I love Lisbon.
Was there for a week last month. Walked all over. Nobody tried to sell me drugs (maybe because I'm in my 70s). Coming from a place that is flat, I loved the hills. Had no trouble getting on-line reservations for dinner at 7:30. I understand that Lisbon is not cheap for locals, but for tourists from the US, it is inexpensive, especially compared to the US and many European cities. That includes lodging, excellent food and good public transportation. Hoping to return.
I love the love and hates ❤
I liked the sense of history and the friendliness of the people as well as the great weather. I loathed the “blind” accordion players on the metro. Those guys are not blind at all they “accidentally” barge into likely targets on the metro and then tap their white stick on something metal to summon their fellow gang members. Lucky for me the transit staff were already chasing them and I worked out what was going on before it was too late.
You are correct about the hills and those tiled pavements. If you want to avoid the super crowded regular tram there is a more expensive restored tram that only does booked tourist trips of the city.
Those guys were there when i lived there too 2 decades ago. Saw some blind people get really mad at them for giving people the wrong impression of blind people's abilities. It was pretty intense
I love lisbon. I have a house in Sesimbra and an apartment in the Alfama one block away from the Pantheon. Im from Washington state. i will say the only "hate" ive had that you shared is the hills and slick cobble streets. ive never ran into the "cocaine" peddlers there. I have seen while driving around the legal prostitutes on the side of the roads. but, i absolutely love Portugal. I recommend seeing as many castles as you can. From Sao Jorge to Pamela to Obidos to the Moorish castle, they are all spectacular! ...Ill be going back for the summer next month and i cant wait!
As a portuguese I'm proud of this video 😌
I will travel over there for the next months ☺️😁😁 after that I will tell you about my experience 🎉🎉
Welcome to Lisbon
Doing a 6 day trip between Porto and Lisbon for my girlfriend’s birthday in a week. This video could not be better timed lol
You two will have a blast!!!
Here's your chance to impress her while in Lisbon. If the weather is nice, take her to Quiosque do Adamastor (look it up on Google Maps). Start at the Bica funicular behind Time Out Market, take that up the hill, then turn left and follow the map to get there. Try to arrive a couple hours before sunset. The Quiosque is quite nice, and a huge crowd typically gathers there for the sunset. Great view of the bridge and the river at sunset. Afterwards, short walk to Bairro Alto for some partying.
We thought the exact same about the packed trams! We enjoyed the bus a lot more, especially to go to the castle/Alfama. Check out our videos about Lisbon for our perspective, we found probably the best Portuguese pastries (and it's not Pasteis De Nata)
Thanks for the great video Mark!
Cheers
I love Lisbon! :)))
Do you have a video on just the food in Portugal? We are headed in May and cannot wait!
Every major city in the world has the same problems as Lisbon, except maybe for the hills 😅. Amazing city though 🎉😊
But dang i had a good behind those years i lived on those hills :)
I don’t know if it was the same district you talked about in the first dislike, but I remember going to Cafe Klandestino in an Uber. All the males on the street wore the same exact thing: sneakers, jeans, black “leather” jacket
Go try the few but amazing Goa food restaurants in Lisbon. Cheap yet delicious and spicy!
1:50 wise words
Hey, the Cocagne brand of Sardines are delicious! 😝
Do you have a video of your recommended restaurants? Thank you so much.
Hey Wolter, thanks for an interesting talk. What is that sort of open-standing cable car you're showing in between? Never heard about it. Is it in Lisbon? Thanks a lot!
I was in Lisbon earlier in the month and before I even got from the Marques De Pombal metro station to my hotel was approached 4 or 5 times by the fake drug scammers in the space of about 15 minutes. I got used to ignoring them throughout my trip but it was an minor annoyance - the Avenida da Liberdade was pretty bad for it. Apart from that I really enjoy Lisbon and I actually really like walking up the hills to the various miradouros (viewpoints) and just wandering about in general. Weather when I was there was awful in terms of periods of torrential rain but was still enjoyable. Managed day trips to Cascais and Sintra without getting drenched. Went inside the Pena Palace in Sintra but it wasn't really enjoyable due to the sheer numbers of people and that was on a Weds in March and and with a timed appointment slot. The Moors Castle and The National Palace of Sintra were much more enjoyable as was the walk from the station up to the castle. But Lisbon itself is a great city and hopefully I will be back soon and hopefully the weather will be better.
I had almost a great time when I visited there. The city was nice, the weather was great, transportation worked great with a Navegante card. The only thing that made it less than great was another tourist that accused me of taking photos of someone I could't even see from where I was standing. I'm not I violent person but I had to walk away so I didn't clock him infront of his family. 🤬 Edit: He didn't even apoligize when I showed him my photos which clearly wasn't of what he accused me of photographing.
Mark the worst thing about Portugal is the cobblestones and the hills. I have limited mobility so if it rains sometimes I cant leave my hotel just in case I slip which has happened before.
Peri peri chicken 😋
3:11 Great video! Can please you tell me the name of the meal @ 3:11 and restaurant ? - It looks delish 😋 Cheers!
Hi, I looked that up and it’s a neighborhood but I can’t find that ride (the thing that’s going thru the trees) is it at a park?
Hates: the hilliness and dirt/run down parts. Likes: everything else
Well now I’m a bit worried about falling. Anyone have a good grippy shoe recommendation? I’m pretty clumsy and had hip replacement last year (not from the clumsiness lol, just arthritis).
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Oh dear I come from a Coal Miner's family and eat by 5:30 pm at the latest lol.... This usually works out well for me when traveling as I never have to make reservations- but if the kitchens are closed until 9pm in Lisbon that won't work. Are a lot of the authentic restaurants open for lunch and what time range is lunch usually? Thanks.
Lunch is usually served between 12pm and 14pm.
Portugal may be affordable from a tourist point of view but not for the locals that live on a Portuguese salary. Plus the people who live in Lisbon don’t go to tourist areas, they go to work. They have to pay rent, electricity, taxes and they also have a family to feed. 04:35.
His channel is obviously from a tourist point of view, this is a travel channel. From a tourist point of view what he said is objectively true, Lisbon is a cheap city compared to alot of other European capitals.
When it comes to locals not being able to afford living in Lisbon, unfortunately this happens all over the world where locals are pushed out of capital cities due to cost of living.
Tourists always spend more money than locals, even in the US.
Every travel chanel says the same from Budapest, but for the local it is expensive. Especally from the last years 45% inflaction. But I understan that for us or western tourist/travellers it is cheap.
@@Elatenlfrom American tourist PoV to be more precise.
@@Elatenl Mass tourism destroyed Lisbon!!
Love Lisboa ! I would move there if the opp. came. Def music lovers get to see some live FADO music. Get lost and find your way back to your lodging. Obidos is cool & sintra is a short ride
True on all counts :)
@@woltersworld i spend 2 weeks there and fell in love went all over , Lisboa , Sintra , Obidos. Porto , sierra De Estral ,
Nazare all over Portugal is great hope to return and fill see more of it
Lisbon Disneyland...born and bred in Lisbon. City is unrecognisable. I get it things cannot remain the same and progress is needed. But the whole tourism thing pushed locals away...expensive, unaffordable, chaotic..well..
Affordable only for tourists :(
I went there in 2019 and everything you said is true especially the drugs part. Nonetheless, it was one of my most memorable trips ever.
Awesome! Glad you had fun!
Would Lisbon be similar to San Francisco hills going up California street to the top of hill and down to fisherman’s wharf and back up? Can I train for Lisbon there
Start training now!! The hills in Lisbon are something else 😅. I injured my Achilles tendon before I went and it didn’t heal in time, it was so painful but I pushed myself and absolutely loved the city.
Not quite as steep as some of the SF hills but more often hills if that males sense in the tourist spots
I’m planning to go to Lisbon with my mom. I would like to know if there is a driver service. If you can help me with the info I’ll appreciate it.
Are you related to Mario Batali? 😊
Oh wow, that first point reminds me of the time me and my brother were accosted by a cocaine dealer on the strip in Albufeira. Indeed, that's something to watch out for throughout the country, though this particular case occurred late in the evening. Just keep walking and you'll be fine
I love Lisboa! Lived there for 4 years but this city lost its authenticity! Some parts full of tourists and all signs in English language! And many restaurants are not selling authentic food ! Other parts just full of Asians ! Such as Martim moniz , which gives you a feeling that you are in India or Nepal
once someone approached me in cologne if I want to buy some of his "gutes Zeug"
Good tips. Correction on pronunciation though at 14:02 the City of Setubal is not pronounced as you read it in English, its pronounced "Shtoolbal". Also with thank you - Obrigado - the O at the end is pronounced with a U - so like "Obrigadu" (male).
Had a great trip to Lisbon. I was concerned about the warnings I saw concerning falling on the cobblestones. I walked about 8-10 miles a day, lots of hills, lots of wet weather. I don't think falling is inevitable if you pay attention to where you are going! I am a clumsy person and I had no mishaps.
first!
Hi, that thing that you’re riding in with your kids in trees that looks like you are in Quito Ecuador - where is that? 22 seconds into video…
campo d'ourique
😢😢😢❤❤❤
First
I feel bad as a tourist in a coastal country as I hate fish and seafood
The iberian pork (porco preto) was my favorite dish there. So you can skip the fish too :)
😮WEED, OMG! Which Neighborhood did you say???
Hahahaa. Dont worry, they will find you 😉
They're not selling weed. They're selling oregano. That's why the Police can't arrest them for drug traffic.
It´s fake don´t buy 😂
Nearly killed by our Uber driver. Rides are cheap though. I know they are trying to make a living, but Tuk Tuks are quite annoying.
Tourist Restaurants are the worst in Lisbon. Not easy to find smth good in the city centre, definitely research!
Talking like a real Lisboeta
Even calling it Expo, instead of Parque das Nações, as it oficialy is...
The Haxixe thing happens to everyone all the time, but is realy no problem, more weird than bad, Just dont buy from them
Portugal sold its country to foreigners 😢 affordable for tourists and unaffordable for locals.
Huh, never had anyone try to sell me drugs---way less than in many other places. I guess they really don't approach women that much? Still surprising, I was actually just thinking about that last week, wondering why it *didn't* happen considering how relatively lax Portugal's drug laws are compared to many other European countries.
I wouldn't call Portugal's drug laws "lax". Portugal decriminalized the use of drugs, but it is still illegal to buy and sell. If you're down by Pink Street at night, you'll see the guys with the "fanny packs" working the tourists. My experience is that they are not aggressive, at least not the guys I encountered. You're right, though, they do tend to gravitate to men.
It's not cocaine, it's flour. And Portuguese hates tuk tuks
O God I would like to go back to ND de Fatima please God sent me the money
I think you have already done a video on the love & hates of Portugal some years ago.
Yes he did but it’s always good to have more ☺️ I am going next month so it’s a benefit for a first timer like me
Always good to do updates especially since things do change.
@@EbonyMMoody Enjoy your time at Lisbon. We are gonna love it. It's a very beautiful city. Do a day trip at Sintra, fantastic place!!!
Also for the last 25 years or so they have been in European Union which uses English as the common language of communication so since that time English is taught in schools
Since 1985, 37 years ago.
English is taught in portuguese schools since... forever.
I was born in the 60s and in mid 70s I was learning English and French in the public school.
We are not fresh out of the dark ages, you know?
@@truthismycause2800 I remember in the 80s we even had Latin and German if we wanted them.
We know how to speak English not because of school, but because films and everything from abroad are subtitled and not dubbed like many countries.
Is there a lot of wallets on the floor
I haven't been to Lisbon for some years, but what I hated the most was the powerty, that made people come to you at an outdoor restaurant and beg for the left overs from your plate.
that must have been very long ago. I lived in Lisbon for about 16 months and never saw that or anything approaching that.
@@grizfan93 Some years before covid
@@wncjan probably decades. You paint an inaccurate and outdated picture of that city.
When expacts and digital nomads invaded the country it looked like this! I'm going to call you a liar, the lie you're telling never happened in Portugal!
What did you gave for him ? Or the plate empty because the food was delicious ?
Not real drugs? Noted!
Best comment lol
Oregano and baking soda.
