- Welcome to part 2 of my very first solo trip. During this week in Lisbon, I battled loneliness, excitement, and so much more. Regardless of the fact that I couldn't continue traveling solo, Lisbon is a beautiful city, and I'm so happy to take you along with me on this journey. My biggest lesson is that not everything you see on the internet is true. Solo traveling looks amazing but it isn't for everyone and that's OKAY.

People, this girl clearly can’t be away from family and friends. Most people have no issue traveling alone. Solo-travel is a beautiful, transformative experience and I recommend it to everyone.. who don’t constantly need family around.

It takes a lot to be vulnerable on camera and expressing your feelings just like that. Idk what environment you're used to, but there is a certain beauty to being alone and discovering places. For me personally, I love the feeling of just getting lost and do things my own pace whether it's walking everywhere or staying in a place and just soaking it in. I think the more you do it, the more used you get to it. But it's great that you have your bf join you. As humans we just love the company of others! Don't feel bad for it :D

Hi there, as someone who’s travelled alone, being by yourself is the best and worst part. We are social creatures so it’s natural we feel lonely and want to experience travel with others. When people talk about travelling alone, they are referring mostly to meeting completely new people from all over the world and experiencing cities / places with them. You have to set yourself up to be able to do this, I recommend:
- booking hostels rather than airbnbs as you will find solo travellers there, and they have activities for you all to do like free walking tours, pub crawls and social events.
It’s normal to feel lonely, once you meet people and see everyone is feeling the same way, it normalises it and you can get in the ups and downs of being by yourself. That IS the beauty of solo travel, having new experiences, feeling new things and coming out of it more secure and confident in who you are and experiencing how other people view life.

@@K.Jespers yes, I agree one not being able to be alone is a cause for deeper reflection to be resolved. That being said, it doesn’t seem that she went into solo travel with the full knowledge of the experience. I sense this is the first time and based her expectation on social media revering how transformative the experience is. I think we’re saying the same thing - that solo travel has revealed this, and the overcoming of it (either structurally by surrounding herself with others, because she enjoys their company or reflection as to why she doesn’t feel comfortable being alone) IS the benefit of the travel, as she’d come out with greater knowledge of herself.

Yup, its not for everyone. The internet portrays solo travel as something that is 'easy', 'fun' and 'life-changing'. and while I did learn a lot about myself, it wasn't easy, and had a much different experience than what people portray solo travel to be. To each's own!
