With his ability to finish I think he has a great chance to win in Tokyo, but who knows in an Olympic final. Someone(or some teamate ala Kenya in '68) may decide to push the pace early to take the sit and kick tactic out. Can't wait for the week of T&F we are about to experience.

Good Job! Wish I could give it more than one thumbs up. The Rio 1500 was one of the most exciting races I've ever watched. Even Matthew was shocked and thrilled. Gold ain't that easy. He was the first American since 1908 to pull that off. On the other hand, he's proved his mettle in the big races many times, and I would be thrilled to see him bring home another medal of any color.

I watched Centro's dad run, and I love watching him run........he looks like he's jogging sometimes....but is passing guys rapidly. Too bad the pacers didn’t do very well, I was at the race and you could actually see him slow down slightly after the pacers left. It was too bad to see him miss it but he had a good attitude about it.
I think the pacers did great! They were right on pace. Only thing you could ask for is for them to go a bit farther, but you would need another 3:50low guy to pull that off.
Just shows you how difficult that record is. I remember when Steve Cram broke the world record in the mile finishing off with a 53 second last lap in Oslo in 85 beating seb coe. First man under 3:47. Steve said he thought he could have always ran faster in that race. 1985 was definitely Cram’s best year. Coe was injured that year, so wasn’t as prepared as usual. We can all agree that Coe was by far the better and the most decorated of the 2. For that matter, Coe is the all time greatest ever over the combined 800m, 1000m, 1500m, and mile envelope.

I love Centro and wish him the best. 10% chance of Gold seems reasonable. If it's a tactical race it could very well be down to Centro and Hocker like at the Trials. In what I think is the more likely case it's a hard pace from the gun, I can't see any podium other than Cheruiyot, ingebrigtsen, Katir. In this case, it looks more like the race where Centro PR'd and was 10th place.
@@kioff9995 Kerr's good too but his PR is 3 seconds behind the three favorites. A month ago I would have said 3rd place was wide open with likely contenders being Kerr, Centro, McSweyn, and a few others but Katir's recent performances have been phenomenal.
I get that, just saying that Kerr has run 3:31 alone at some small meet in Portland. Having a field like this and not having to work as hard he’ll for sure be up there with the top guys.
One question. When Kipchoge run under 2 hours the marathon I heard there must be at least 3 finishers to validate any record in that race.. not if it is true but could this be the reason there 2 another 2 racers?
He’s not going to have to go that fast to medal. He’s going to need the right tactics and the right race. He got it in Rio. This time they won’t run a 500m sprint off a crawling pace. The real question is Centro’s kick. It didn’t look razor sharp at the trials, but he was probably still training hard and not fully tapered for that race.
Seems to me that Matt peeked a little too soon with this attempt at a mile record right before the Olympics. He didn’t even make the 1500m final, right?
Actually he wasn't peaking, you want to have a hard effort 2 weeks to 10 days before your best. It's true Matt didn't make the final but he actually ran faster in his SF than many who made the final. It was a bit of bad luck, but Matt will admit he made some tactical mistakes, unusual for him.

It was a great race and I think the pacers did their job well, but they did go 54 low at 440yd and 1:52 mid at 880yd if I remember correctly, which is almost as fast as Hicham El Guerrouj went out in when he broke the mile world record. I’ll just leave it at that

C'mon the pacing was not good! The first lap was too fast so when he came through 800 he may have been on pace but he was already running too slow. This isn't an 800 where everyone positive splits, 1500 should be even to a slight negative split

But now with these type of things coming out, I've come to a more melancholy opinion. I just couldn't believe it at first, but now I can. More and more athletes are going through this type of thing, and it makes it to the public eye now a days. I just think it's really sad.
Here is what I’m thinking, centro is a super smart guy and I’m thinking he set up this time trial race right before the olympics and that he intentionally held back so that his 1500m competitors would see his time and underestimate him for the 1500m so they won’t think he has a chance so he will surprise them in the 1500m race and sprint past them when they think he’s dead.
