With all due respect to Bolt, I'd put Edwin Moses up against Usain Bolt, adjusting Moses' income for inflation. The finances were a little bit complicated back then (more so than what Nick mentions in this video), but he was so dominant in the 400IH, and no slouch in the open 400m, so any time he showed up for a meet he'd attract a crowd. I used to attend the Mt. SAC Relays (Pomona, Calif) every year and you noticed how much bigger the crowds were at that meet when he was entered.

My friend had about 2 or 2.5 years about 20 years back when he was sponsored (free shoes and gear) and he picked up a couple grand per year running/winning races in the mid Atlantic. He ran a 4:13 mile and 14:45 for 5k. Obviously you can't live on that, so that combined with his legs breaking down took him out. But he was 15-20 seconds too slow in the mile and a minute or so slow in 5K to get to where Nick was.

Btw Nick I am curious about something I've heard about athletes getting post-Olympic depression. Many of them spend their entire life trying to make it to the Olympics and then once it's over after they've had their fame or lack thereof, they often fall into depression. Do you have any experience with that? I think a vid talking about this would be really interesting. Thanks love the channel!

Glad to see people not griping or running down making that much money for a race. Many pro athletes (basketball, hockey, baseball, football) make millions per year. Pro track athletes that make real money are not that common, and the money pales in comparison with the others I mentioned. The level of training and dedication to the sport is not any less.

Sounds somewhat like the Tour de France bicycle race riders. The winner doesn't get all that much in prize money, but the follow-on income from advertisers, sponsors, and appearance fees at events and other pro bicycle races is where you really bank those paydays. Its no wonder so many of those riders cheated in the past (and some still do) as the pay-off is so great.
I've also heard Gene Simmons (the band KISS) mention their biggest income source over the years has been from marketing of 'KISS'-branded merchandise, not concert fees or record sales. Weird how the world works.

Do certain races pay more money than others do based on popularity? I would say the big five that people watch are the 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1600. Do people who excel in these events generally receive bigger pay days than people who win less popular events due to increased viewership?

Hey Nick I absolutely love all of your videos and you are very inspiring. But I have a question I have my national cross country meet coming up and am I suppose to be feeling really good on my runs and are they supposed to feel easy or is it okay that they still feel hard and I am tapering but how much should I be tapering? It is in one week.

It's ok to feel a bit sluggish during a taper. Remember you want to taper volume, not intensity. I like a 10-14 taper typically.

That is not a bad payday on a per-hour basis. For those of us who can't run a 1:43 800. You want to make money in sports? Be a referee or umpire. That is a good payday for those of us who don't have world-class speed.

How fast were you in high school? 400,800,1500 and what ever else you ran. I want to know the times (and beat them :)

I doubt Nick answers but if anyone knows I’m curious. Say you’re given $5,000-$10,000 in appearance fee money. Do you then use a portion of that to pay for your flight, hotel etc? Or does the meet, or your sponsor, pay for those typically?

Just out of curiosity I did a little math.... $90,000 for 1:43 would come out to $3,146,853.10/hr. Not bad!! You should have run the marathon! ;)

Nick Symmonds has been controversial. However, he made the most out of his career and his novel chewing gum. He's an interesting person with energy. That gum must work.

I am shocked how little runners are paid!!! Its so much hard work. People get paid millions for rolling on the ground upon being touched with a finger on soccer fields

Hi Nick. I'm one of your subscribers. I REALLY admire professional middle and distance runners. There's MUCH easier ways to make money (more steady too). One REALLY has to be PASSIONATE about what they do to run professionally (not including sprinters😉).

The Olympics are supposed to be for amateur sports people. Not the case anymore cause pretty much the majority of athletes are professional. Even the IAAF is supposed to be for amateur athletes. The thing is every young athlete that starts a sport does it for pure enjoyment. Making money is the furthest thing they think about.

If nick were paid at that rate but by the hour he’d have an annual income of 6.5 billion working 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year
