Day 361 of posting a cool animal fact: Let me tell you about the Mexican whiptail lizard and what makes them so interesting! First of all, Mexican whiptails reproduce entirely asexually, meaning they don't need a partner to reproduce and that all Mexican whiptails are female. But that's not the interesting part, the interesting part is that they are very genetically diverse! See, with sexual reproduction 2 different individuals contribute their genes to create offspring, but with asexual reproduction it essentially makes a copy of the individual who birthed it. For this reason, purely asexual reproduction is rare, because a lack of genetic diversity is not optimal for a constantly changing world. But Mexican whiptails do not have this problem! Their DNA actually changes between generations rather than just making clones of themselves! What they do is that they create double the amount of required chromosomes and then the genetic combination gets scrambled before the extra chromosomes are then lost, creating a baby that is different from the mother!
