It was in your bag, idk what else you have in that bag or where else its been...your hands have been touching your steering wheel. The door handle as you walked inside the place. Who knows what else you touched along the way.

      Veronika Granado I think it's allowed at Starbucks because it's something that they have access to provide because the machine they use to clean cups is out and accessible. Many restaurants have to take things to the back area where they clean and in the walk it takes to get there something can get cross-contaminated. Essentially it could be a liability (maybe not to the people wanting their own personal containers used but to anyone else that witnesses can claim that their food was contaminated even if it wasn't). Even if it's not a state health code violation, different companies have their own standard operation procedures

    McDonald's standard protocol tells people that if they hand you the wrong order through the drive-thru window, that they're not supposed to take it back and that the customer gets to keep it, in addition to getting their order fixed, simply because they can't verify but the product is still sanitary, and hasn't been tampered with. It might not violate your State's personal health codes, but it violates McDonald's standards of practice.

    • @tamannaakhan
      @tamannaakhan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +844

      dnsoulx Well, we can always assume that a stable chain company would have some consistency on what they allow and don’t allow. Without that, there’s a lack of professionalism. Things labeled as “health code violations” shouldn’t be up to the cashier’s, manager’s, or waitress’s etc. personal preference.

    • @aavery02
      @aavery02 5 ปีที่แล้ว +147

      Tamanna Khan unfortunately many things are left up to the manager on duty, and that is mainly to accommodate the fact that every situation is different. The company will have it’s policy that is consistent across the board, but leave it to the managers approval for exceptions so the head office isn’t being called a thousand times a day for clarity on a policy that a customer is challenging.
      Essentially, where they say “no outside containers in the kitchen” the customer says “but this ones clean. You can even sanitize it if you’d like” rather than calling HQ and asking for clarification here it’s “let me check with my manager” because part of your job as the manager is to (within the law) enforce the company policies however you best see fit on behalf of the company.
      Sometimes this means completely going against it to calm a very upset customer and avoid a scene/complaint. As the MOD I have had to accept returns on a completely empty product that was final sale because the customer was upset enough to complain when I initially refused. Even a perfectly resellable product can be exchanged only, not returned according to my company return policy but I was forced by the district manager to make an exception to please the customer. We also have specific “no exceptions” on other policies so it’s all really inconsistent but that is just the easiest way to do business successfully.

      I work at a Wendy’s in CT, and we have surprisingly strict rules about things coming over the counter, even if the customer sat in the dining room. People always try to return unopened sour creams, sauces, etc., and they just go right into the trash. Even if I hand out 4 drinks on a tray, will people sit there and put the drinks in the car cup holders and then try to give it back (it’s natural to try to return what we don’t need I’d probably have done the same thing before I started working there), but I can’t take it. Even though it was in my sight the entire time and they had it for under a minute, I could get fired, my manager could get fired, the restaurant could be shut down if a health inspector sees or someone calls corporate and complains. I make CT minimum wage, so there’s nothing I can do, but I won’t risk my coworkers/managers jobs just because someone wants me to take a tray back or restock a sauce they didn’t open.

    • @burning4rmwithin
      @burning4rmwithin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      That's a joke. I've seen plenty managers handle money then food without washing their hands. When you're short staffed, they do a lot of things they shouldn't if customers aren't looking. I've taken the exams... you're supposed to wash your hands first before putting on gloves... I'm sure 95% of people don't do that. Too time consuming. That's one reason why it's hard working fast food.
      If you're shift manager and short staffed, you're the cashier, order taker, cook, dishwasher...i used to take order on the headset while making the food. Then i would cash them out, take the next order, make the food, repeat. I do change my gloves every time but i don't have time to wash my hands. Some places have the easy slip on gloves that i use often when i have to multitask. They're meant for single, one time use.

    Even if your container LOOKS clean, it's not guaranteed to be. Each worker that handles it would have to wash their hands after contact, which at first doesn't seem like a big deal. But in fast food where the point is to be FAST, stepping away from your station is detrimental to business. Also, if you allow it for one person, then it creates a precedent and you'll have to allow it for others. It's perfectly demonstrated here where the woman was allowed ONCE in ONE location at ONE specific time and now she feels entitled to the same service by other stores.
    If more people started to bring more personal containers to fast food, it would greatly increase their times and productivity.
    Please note that I WISH this WOULD happen, but be realistic. Big fast food companies care about profits, not about the environment. They will never be willing to this kind of trend because it doesn't benefit THEM in the slightest.
    edit: corrected decrease to increase

      To add to your point:
      Profit aside; I just truly don’t believe there’s a system in fast food that zero waste would be a viable option. The amount of plastic/water that would be wasted, trying to accommodate people bringing in their own containers, would make it so there’s not enough of a difference to positively affect the environment. It’s a very similar idea to veganism. Yes, being vegan helps protect animals but, it isn’t an environmentally beneficial practice, as it takes more resources than it does save.
      I do agree with you though, I wish there was a way. But sadly, I think it’s just better overall to eat at home and do what you can to bring less waste into the environment.

      Angel Hair Vlogging I totally agree. I like Chipotle because it’s healthier and more natural compared to other quick-service restaurants, but is still convenient and reasonably priced for what you get. But unfortunately, I think most people care about one or the other- you have the mainstream crowd that really only cares about price and convenience, and the crowd that cares about being healthy/natural/earth friendly. I think that Chipotle is kind of alienating themselves in a way by trying to tiptoe the line and please both crowds, and I’m not sure how long that will work for them. Also using your own container and then purchasing unsustainably harvested and made food is not sustainable. Many companies have there own set of parameters to ensure maximum cleanliness at their restaurants

    It’s a health code thing.
    Edit: I understand that’s the law in CA however that isn’t going to apply to large fast food chains because they have to adhere to their company’s policies vs local businesses where they essentially can do whatever they want while following their city/state’s health code laws. There are are some exceptions where the manager at a chain restaurant is cool with it but it’s pretty rare.

      Exactly, small businesses get a lot of slack that major corporations do not get (aka putting the calorie count next to every menu item). Where I live, mom&pop/local shops do not have to do that, but McDonalds and other big establishments would actually be in violation if they didn't.

      Depends on the type of car and the type of waste. For instance, plastics don't break down for centuries and when they do, they photodegrade rather than biodegrade. Car emissions, on the other hand, if and when humans shift away from fossil fuels, will cycle out much faster. And if the car is a hybrid or electric, there are little to no emissions.

There was about 5 McDonald's within a 3 mile radius in all three, chick fil a had one every 3 miles, and Chipotle has about 3 to 10 in the city. If Starbucks and Dunkin can do it, why can't other fast food chains?
    Edit:I just mulled this over in the shower. The reason they can't do it with food is because fast food is contacted with gloved hands. Especially in fast food. They COULD but it would require changing gloves (which nullifies it being zero waste) they cannot touch outside containers, and that's fair. Fast food places service hundreds of people daily and obviously theres no way of knowing outside containers are even relatively clean. So really it wouldnt be zero waste without being unsanitary.
    I suggest that these fast food companies incorporate/sell a reusable cup, and to go bags that can be brought into all fast food chains. Drinks are dispensed and do not require hand contact. Also most fast food chains are owned under the same 3 companies. Few are independent. So using the same cup at multiple different locations shouldnt be an issue. Same with to-go bags. A cashier can place a packaged food item into a bag, no cross contamination since cashiers don't touch bare food anyway.

    • @TcFW97TCM
      @TcFW97TCM 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It shouldn't matter where the container was bought. I don't think fast food can be zero waste on the consumer side. The business would have to have offsets (whole different side of sustainability/environmentalism than what's presented in the video), and have in house procedures to reduce waste. Zero is impossible. There's a lot they can do but there's no pressure to do it.
